Michael Gavrilos (St. George, New Castle) Or any available Orthodox priest Friday, September 14th is the holyday of the Holy Cross. Due to its solemn nature, September 14th is a strict fast day no meat or dairy products should be consumed. As Fr. David will be away, we will not have any divine services at Saint John s for this holyday. You are welcome to participate in Divine Liturgy on Friday, September 14th at one of the neighboring Orthodox churches: Holy Cross Orthodox Church (950 Maple Drive, Hermitage) Fr. This year s Youngstown Deanery DDD Appreciation Dinner will be on Sunday, October 7 at Dilucia s Restaurant, Elm Road (next to the Echo Lane Bowling Alley) in Warren. The dinner will begin promptly at 5:00 PM. Those who contribute $100 or more to the dinner are invited to attend. If you wish to bring a guest, guest tickets may be purchased for $30 each. The deadline is Sunday, September 23. (Please send the checks for guest tickets to the Diocese as well.) If you have given to the DDD program, please sign up on the sheet in the hall. LOCAL EVENT: The Orthodox Food Festival will take place at the St. George Serbian Orthodox Picnic Grounds, 65 South Keel Ridge Road, Hermitage on Saturday, September 15 from 11 AM to 8 PM and on Sunday, September 16 from 11 AM to 5 PM. A variety of foods will be available. Support our neighboring Orthodox parishes!

Exciting News for the Diocese Last Sunday, Fr. David read this letter from Bishop Gregory from the pulpit... Today I write to share with you my dear brother Priests and wonderful Laypeople (youth and adults) the news that the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople at its monthly meeting on August 29, 2018 voted to elevate your Bishop to the rank of Metropolitan. I was stunned and nearly speechless (and still am) when His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of the Greek Archdiocese who serves as the Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate here in America called yesterday afternoon. His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the Holy and Sacred Synod have honored all of us. I am truly greatly humbled. Working in His Vineyard with much love, +Bishop Gregory of Nyssa As directed by the Diocesan Chancery, until the formal bestowal of this new title, we are to continue to refer to His Grace, Bishop Gregory. However, be aware that at some point in the near future, we will refer to His Eminence, Metropolitan Gregory. In the Divine Services, we pray for our bishop by name several times. It is important that we carry this over into our private prayer life and daily pray to the Lord for our Father and Shepherd, Bishop Gregory. It is a weighty ministry to be a hierarch, one which is lightened by the prayers and support of the flock. May God grant to His Grace, Bishop Gregory Metropolitan-Elect many years!

4 Thoughts on Stewardship by Dan Hromyak "Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise..." - Ephesians 5:15 A wise person recognizes that all we have and all we are comes from God. A wise person thanks God continually throughout the day for all His many blessings. A wise person realizes that God has blessed us for a reason and that He wants us to help Him build His kingdom of earth. "If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will serve...as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." - Joshua 24:15 When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be willing to become a partner in the work of the Lord. A partner is a person who invests time in prayer every day, joyfully participates in charitable works and generally supports the parish and Church mission. If we say we serve God, we must actually do something and not merely talk about it! "Be doers of the word not hearers only..." - James 1:22 It's easy to understand the definition of stewardship. The hard part is living it! What do you do to live God's word? Do you share your time in prayer with God? Do you use your talent to help those in need? Are you generous with your financial resources? If not, what are you waiting for? Sacramental and Membership Information Sick Calls can be made at any time. Please phone the rectory ( ) when a family member is admitted to the hospital, or to request a home visit. Marriages are solemnized on Saturdays or Sundays. Circumstances may require a dispensation from the diocesan bishop. Consult the pastor at least six months in advance and before any plans have been made for the wedding reception. Marriages cannot be celebrated during the fasting seasons of the church, or on Fridays. Baptisms are usually scheduled on Saturdays or Sundays. Consult the pastor. Two godparents (godfather and godmother) are required, at least one of whom must be a practicing Orthodox Christian in good standing, and the other a practicing, baptized Christian. Church Funerals are, under ordinary circumstances, provided for practicing Orthodox Christians who are current in their spiritual and material obligations to the parish; otherwise, the funeral service is conducted at the funeral home. The Church does not permit cremation. Parishioners in good standing are those Orthodox Christians who, as members of Saint John s Orthodox Church, strive to live according to the teachings of the Orthodox Church; participate in the life of the parish through regular church attendance, regular reception of Holy Communion and periodic Holy Confession (and receive these sacraments no less than once a year); and financially support the parish (especially through an annual pledge ). Prospective members and returning members are asked to fill out an application form, copies of which are available in the church office.

5 Sometimes people make excuses as to why they don t come to church. How would these same excuses sound if we applied them to other things? 12 REASONS I NEVER GO TO CHURCH A SPORTING EVENT 1) The coach never came to visit me. 2) Every time I went, they asked for money. 3) The people sitting in my row didn t seem very friendly. 4) The seats were very hard. 5) The referees made a decision I didn t agree with. 6) I was sitting with hypocrites they only came to see what others were wearing! 7) Some games went into overtime and I was late getting home. 8) The band played some songs I had never heard before. 9) The games are scheduled on my only day to sleep in and run errands. 10) My parents took me to too many games when I was growing up. 11) Since I read a book on sports, I feel that I know more than the coaches, anyway. 12) I don t want to take my children because I want them to choose for themselves what sport they like best. 10+ REASONS I NEVER GO TO CHURCH SHOWER 1) I was forced to shower as a child. 2) People who shower are hypocrites. They think they are cleaner than everyone else. 3) There are so many different kinds of soap, I could never decide which one was right. 4) I used to shower, but it got boring so I stopped. 5) I shower only on special occasions, like Easter and Christmas. 6) None of my friends shower. 7) I m still young. When I m older and have gotten a bit dirtier, I might start showering. 8) I really don t have time to shower. 9) The bathroom is never warm enough in the winter or cool enough in the summer. 10) People who make soap are only after your money. (There s more!) I get along very well without showering. I work hard all week and am too tired to take a shower on the weekend. The first bar of soap I ever used gave me a rash, so I haven t gone near soap since.
