2 Pastor s Corner Dear Parishioners, While away on pilgrimage, I received word that our beloved Father Marcial Juan passed away at the age of 75. We had just honored him at our last Keep on Rollin' benefit in June and celebrated his 50 years of Priesthood in December. It was a shocker on the one hand, and it seemed so sudden. Father Juan started with me here at Holy Family on July 1, 2008 and initially served as senior priest until his retirement five years ago at the age of 70. He had not only been undergoing dialysis treatments 3 times each week, but internally suffered numerous ailments affecting many organs in his body. He insisted up to the end to serve mass occasionally despite his health and limitations. Father Juan served as a priest for 50 years, was beloved by many; and, we pray that he is now with the angels and saints, resting in peace. Thank you, Father Juan! You will be greatly missed! We love you. Next weekend, our seminarian Danny Guinto will be ordained a transitional deacon for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Just so you know, all priests are first ordained deacons. Even Pope Francis was ordained a deacon prior to being ordained a priest. We are proud of Danny and his discernment and preparation and we are looking forward to his service as a deacon and later a priest for our archdiocese. The next day Danny will be serving his first Mass as a deacon here at Holy Family. There is so much suffering in the world. I was reflecting on how we maybe handle suffering. How should we deal with it? I was reading an article in The Priest magazine (March 2016) by Dr. Decelles, a retired full professor from the Department of Religious Studies at Marywood University. He had received a diagnosis of ALS aka Lou Gehrig s disease. It is an awful disease. Nonetheless Dr. Decelles appeared to be handling his disease with grace and an attitude of gratitude. Wow! I thank God for drawing good out of evil and allowing me to join my sufferings to those of Christ for my own spiritual benefit and that of my brothers and sisters within the Mystical Body of Christ. I tell the Father that I know He did not cause me to be weighed down by ALS. I am a casualty of an imperfect physical universe moving slowly toward perfection and spiritualization, a universe being helped along in this movement by human research made possible through His gifts. I dare to speak openly and frankly with my Father, my Abba, my Dad. I point out that he is God and not a god. He does not need to draw good out of evil in order to grant us human beings what is required to make our lives full and complete, both physically and spiritually. He can grant us what we need by drawing from the infinite resources of His abundance. He has infinite resources, unlimited abundance at His disposal. [to be continued] Summer blessings! Fr. 4 More Parish News At all special celebrations at Holy Family, including Christmas and Easter, the priests and deacons wear matching vestments to celebrate the mass. Our current vestments are over 25 years old and need to be replaced. If you would like to sponsor one of the vestments, your name or a memorial name for a loved one can be embroidered on the inside back flap of the vestment. We are hoping to fund this project so we can use the new vestments for Christmas. All our old vestments will be donated to our sister parish in Haiti. 5 Capital Projects More Parish News With all of the building and renovation work going on around Holy Family, we would understand if you are thinking, Wait, did the capital campaign begin without my noticing? But, no. While much of the work that is being done is part of our master plan, our capital campaign is focused primarily on raising the needed funds to build a Parish Center. Work on being able to launch that campaign in January 2018 continues. One of the most important things that we ve accomplished for the campaign has been the selection of our architects: Pica + Sullivan, a well-respected California firm whose projects include many educational buildings, sports centers, and the Community Center for St. Monica. Plans for the actual campaign itself are also moving forward. Over the next month, we ll be putting a Campaign Task Force in place. This group will work with Deacon Ron Baker and our consultant, Janet Levine, on developing a complete campaign and communications strategy for the campaign. Our successful capital campaign will ensure that the Parish Center becomes a reality but that it personifies the warm, spiritual culture that is Holy Family. PLANNING TO GET MARRIED? 6 More Parish News WHY GO TO CHURCH ON SUNDAYS? A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. He wrote: "I've gone for 30 years now, and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons, but for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time, the preachers and priests are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all." This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column. Much to the delight of the editor, it went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: "I've been married for almost 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. "But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. "But I do know this: They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. "If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. "Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!" When you are DOWN to nothing, God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible & receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical and our spiritual nourishment!
