4 CHRISTMAS 2011 I don t know about you, but this Christmas or more accurately this year of preparation for Christmas seems to be unlike most others that I can recall. Christmas has always been my most favorite Holiday, and I would begin celebrating as early as July. It wasn t that I was caught-up in the commercialism of it all but rather the spirit of the Yuletide Season. The sacred music and yes, some of the secular carols as well, the heart-felt anticipation resulting from making or buying that perfect gift for that special someone and then having to wait for them to open it, and hence all the child-like Joy was simply compelling. And the nearer that Christmas became, the greater the Joy and enthusiasm until it reached an exhilarating crescendo after Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. But this year, it seems, much of the exhilaration and enthusiasm has given way to a sort of angst precipitated by many of the usual burdens and demands that life can sometimes throw our way. If you ve ever heard The 12 Pains of Christmas by Bob Rivers, a remarkably funny parody of the traditional carol, then you ll know what I mean. But all kidding aside, there s something that seems very different this year! What is this oppressive feeling that seems to make us feel as though we can barely make it through the day with flu-like symptoms that appear to affect practically everything we do? Where is all the wonder and Joy of the Season? What has happened to simple gaiety that used to be expressed in every Merry Christmas? Whatever happened to reaching across the miles with a handwritten card to acknowledge someone as a special blessing in our life and to offer our sincere love and gratitude for them? It seems as though all we ever hear about is how depressing Christmas can be, as well as the whole of the Holiday Season! Or how we can keep ourselves entertained by circumventing the traditional modes of the Christmas Season oops, I meant to say the Winter Solstice. With the lightening-speed advancement in electronics technology and the expansion of other related fields within the sciences, I contend it should be relatively easy to see the why and how of our dilemma. More and more seems to be thrust upon us as we engage life and living in the midst of all this super-accelerated progression. But shouldn t we be asking, Is it really progress? I mean, are we truly accomplishing more than we ever did in a qualitative way and are we better off? Or is it more accurate to say that we have become more caught-up in the vortex of media-induced reality that leaves us feeling exhausted and indifferent or even detached from what should be most important to each of us such as matters of the heart child-like innocence the gift of time? Between reality TV programming and the ever evolving super-chip that now brings us realistic 3-D TV in hang-on-your-wall mega screens of up to 80 inches (at last count) and voice recognition technology that is used not only in cell phones but also anything else that can be micro-chipped, among many other forms of artificial intelligence, it s a wonder we are even capable of functioning at all! It kind of reminds me of Stanley Kubrick s 1968 epic film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, among other notable movies within the science fiction genre of yesteryear. Now don t get me wrong I appreciate and can even enjoy some of the gadgets and such at our disposal today. However, it is another thing altogether when we become the consumed rather than the consumer. The out-of-control pace endemic to our present life and living is just that OUT OF CONTROL! We have lost or compromised our ability to control what we can while claiming a false sense of power that deludes us into thinking that we can or should control what we shouldn t! We think we have the right or the entitlement (apart from Eternal Law) to say what is or isn t morally good or bad or what is or isn t ethically right or wrong, such as when it comes to same sex unions or a woman s right to choose. But when we can assert our power to control much of the decay in our culture and society we don t, such as when it comes to athletes being compensated hundreds of millions of dollars thereby commanding out-of-the-park prices on everything from game tickets to sundry items that no longer allow most families to attend a game or shopping malls, condo/home associations, or schools caving to threats of legal action due to the display of a Christmas tree or Nativity or what s this suspending students for genuflecting like Tim Tebow, a bold and courageous young Christian man who has kept his virginity undefiled and who humbly acknowledges God for all his accomplishments, whether on the field or off! And on it goes! We must be willing to re-member what is truly important as a chosen people of God Jesus is the ONLY WAY and TRUTH and the ONLY LIFE WORTH LIVING leading to Eternal Salvation where eye has not seen nor ear has heard what God has ready for those who love Him We must re-member how to use our power more wisely and prudently, while at the same time re-member how to invest that same power in the intangibles of life that make living ever more Joy-filled and Peace-filled and thus blessed and fruitful. And we must begin NOW! May we be resolute in the New Year of Grace to be completely open, docile and obedient to the Father s Will so that we may be-come all who God created us to be and fulfill His plan for the Salvation of our souls and those entrusted to the stewardship of our love. I wish you, my brothers and sisters in Christ, a most Blessed Christmas and a Holy, Healthy and Happy New Year! Love and prayers in Jesus and Mary always, Fr. James

5 NEW MISSAL CHANGES Beginning with the Vigil Mass for the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, we are using the New Roman Missal for all Mass parts for both the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. As a means of furnishing a resource to assist all of our Parishioners with the proper Prayers and Responses, we have decided to provide easy-to-read Pew Cards rather than Missalettes due to both cost and the wastefulness since it is a disposable product. We also will have a permanent hard-bound Hymnal that will provide a very broad range of Traditional and Contemporary Music for all Mass settings. These two resources should provide us with years of service without the expense of having to replace them annually. Since the new Hymnals will not contain any Mass Readings, we encourage our Parishioners to listen to the Word proclaimed rather than read along. But for those who are hearing impaired or feel they comprehend better by reading, we would like to Suggest that the Scripture Readings are read prior to coming to Mass or to purchase and bring a missal such as the St. Joseph Missal. Either a Sunday Missal or a Daily Missal can be purchased in our Caritas Gift Shop at the end of January. Thank You and God Bless! If You Are Late to Mass... Most of us have been late to Mass at one time or another. Understandably, things happen...the alarm clock didn t go off, the kids weren t quite ready...you were stuck in unexpected traffic on the way On those rare occasions when you arrive late, we ask that you also understand and respect the need to minimize distractions for those participating in Worship. Please respect your fellow Parishioners and our Ministers of Hospitality when they ask you to wait in the Vestibule until an appropriate time for you to enter the Worship space. Latecomers are asked to refrain from entering the nave of the Church: During the Opening Prayer and During the Liturgy of the Word, to show respect for the Word of God among us, except as follows: Between the 1st Reading and the Psalm, Between the Psalm and the 2nd Reading, Following the 2nd Reading, and Following the Reading of the Gospel, before the homily begins. During The Liturgy of the Eucharist, We also ask that you refrain from moving about the Church, especially during the Consecration, the most solemn, sacred moment of the Mass when the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Thank you for your cooperation. The Parish Office will be closed from Monday December 26 th through Friday December 30 th. LITURGICAL CALENDAR OF THE CHRISTMAS SEASON MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD New Year s Eve Masses Saturday, December 31, pm Vigil and 12 am (Mass at Midnight) There will be no Confessions on Saturday, December 31 before the 4 pm Vigil Mass. 10 St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church Stewardship An act of worship...not an act of obligation `tüç tçw XÄ étuxà{m Stewards Responding to God s Call Mary responded to God s call without hesitation. God, understanding the need all women have for relationship and community with other women, chose Elizabeth to also have a son. And Mary hurried to Elizabeth to fill her heart with companionship, courage and wisdom. Mary and Elizabeth, kinswomen blessed by God, rejoiced together strengthened by their role in our salvation. Spiritually bound, Mary and Elizabeth raised their sons, rejoicing in the cousins love for one another. Watching their struggles. Encouraging their ministries. Bearing their losses. Wiping each other s tears. reveling in the fulfillment of God s glory. Mary and Elizabeth, both chosen by God both accepting His call, both bearing sons, both loving and strengthened by their shared lineage and destiny. Christianity born through their loving bonds of faith. Jensen Beach, Florida A Stewardship Moment In today s Christmas Mass at Dawn, we hear from the Gospel reading that God has entered quietly into the world. Not into the great city of Jerusalem, but into a small village about five miles south. Not into a noble family, but to an outcast couple keeping the newborn in a manger. Not announced by royal edicts, but to common shepherds, the first human heralds of Christ s birth. As Christian Stewards we simply allow Christ to live in us no matter what our circumstances happen to be. We allow Christ to share his love with us and reflect that love out to others. We now are the heralds of Christ s Incarnation. What an unimaginable gift from a generous Lord. Good stewards rejoice in this gift and give glory to God.
