St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church Dark Knight reveals our need for the Light! Jensen Beach, Florida In the darkness of the Midnight hour of Friday, July 20, a lone dark figure equipped with tactical gear walked into a cinema in Aurora, Colorado and opened fire killing 12 people and wounding another 59. It was the Preview showing of the latest film in the comic series Batman. But the carnage that ensued that night for 71 people and others is anything but comical! In fact, it was downright evil! As I humbly stood this past Sunday morning to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to offer my homily in the wake of this senseless tragedy, I perhaps like many other priests and clergy across this nation struggled to find the words that would challenge each of us to pause and reflect upon what truly caused this latest outbreak of unimaginable terror. I suggested that we consider the influence of evil all around us and to recognize that our culture has become more fixated on the dark side of our wounded and sinful nature giving accelerated rise to a culture of death. Why is it, I asked, that we continue to compromise our values and virtues for an agenda that appears to be tolerant and accommodating towards what can only be described more accurately as the wiles of the Enemy which continues to confound the best of us? Take something that was once seemingly innocuous, such as the original TV series Batman and compare it with the more recent versions of this now dark hero figure replete with full body armor and weaponry that would be the envy of any soldier or tactical law enforcement personnel. What has happened to us as a society and culture? What has happened to our notion of right and wrong good and bad? Why is it that we have allowed ourselves to become duped by those in positions of authority and power that would seek to tear down and destroy the inherent good of people rather than truly edify and build up the people they are entrusted to serve notwithstanding Church or State? Why is it that we have become so desensitized to sin and the amoral sensationalism propagated by certain powers within mass media and the political arena? So much so in fact that it seems we have become increasingly apathetic to the traditional principles that indelibly bears the immutable Thought of God. Has life and living become so monotonous or intolerable that we continue to resort to image-building of the golden calf and other such idols thus replacing a true punctilious perspective for a virtual reality engineered by technology and the social media? What is this tenacious grip on so many of us that has seemingly resulted in our tapping out, thus throwing in the proverbial towel to signal our submission? Very simply and sadly it is the influence of evil. The cunning serpent has, ever since the Fall, relentlessly seduced and deceived humankind through myriad and multiple means to entice us to overindulge our lower sensuous appetite that is opposed to our rational faculty. This is what I often refer to as stinking thinking. As the adage goes, Misery loves company! The once mighty Archangel Lucifer become Satan fell from God s Grace and Heaven due to pride, arrogance and disobedience and swayed a third of the angels to fall with him. And ever since that time, all of humanity has been subject to his taunts and temptations. The snares of the father of lies are insidiously woven for one purpose and one purpose alone to make us fall like he chose to do! Out of Grace with God thereby risking our eternal salvation! Perhaps the most devious ploy of Satan over the last 50 years or so has been, as I often say, to convince us that black and white is ambiguous and therefore we are entitled to see only hues of gray. But Truth be told black and white are real colors and only God gets to color with gray! Father James Molgano

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 29, 2012 The Prodigal Son s Brother We all know the story of the prodigal son. Please take a moment to recall the part of the story that describes his brother: Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean. The servant said to him, Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound. He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him. He said to his father in reply, Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf. He said to him, My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found. Luke 15: Sometimes as our spiritual life unfolds, our forms of devotion expand. While this is a wonderful thing to experience, we can run the risk of developing a sort of spiritual pride or simple lack of friendliness towards other people who may not have exhibited the same devotion, participation or level of activity. Perhaps it can even be perceived by newcomers as an unwelcoming atmosphere. Do we reach out to new members of our parish? Do we rejoice in those who return? Do we welcome people to participate in our ministries? Do we celebrate each new face and address them with a smile, or like the prodigal son s brother, do we focus more on our own service or become more intent on the faces of those we know so well, who have been devoted for so long. Every new face is a reason for celebration. EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Offer a warm welcome to every new parish member. Please send your comments, thoughts and suggestions for EVANGELISM IN ACTION to newevangelism@gmail.com or call Keith Thompson at Notice of Open Position Pastoral Center - Palm Beach Gardens, FL The Diocese of Palm Beach is currently seeking an Administrative Assistant in the Development Office Please see our job posting and application instructions at employment Matt. 25:35 FOOD PANTRY We now have food baskets at each entrance to our Church, to help feed the hungry. 6 St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church Jensen Beach, Florida In the Diocese of Palm Beach, is celebrating Natural Family Planning Awareness Week July 22 July 28.

Natural Family Planning Week July 22 July 28 Frequently Asked Questions * How effective is Natural Family Planning Statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and a World Health Organization study show that the Billings Ovulation Method and the Sympto-Thermal Method of Natural Family Planning are % effective in postponing pregnancy when couples are properly taught and the method is followed correctly. Is the Billings Ovulation Method the same as the "Rhythm Method"? No. The Billings Ovulation Method is very different from the Calendar Rhythm Method. Rhythm, which was developed in the 1930s, is based on a calculation of a woman's previous menstrual cycle lengths. In the Billings Ovulation Method, which was developed in 1950, fertile and infertile phases of the cycle are determined by observing the normal changes in cervical mucus secretions which every fertile woman experiences. Who developed the Billings Ovulation Method? The Billings Ovulation Method was developed more than 40 years ago by Drs. John and Lyn Billings of Melbourne, Australia. Dr. John Billings is a neurologist and Dr. Lyn is a pediatrician. They have taught the Billings Method all over the world and today they spend much of their time teaching in China. What does the Church teach about Natural Family Planning? Pope John Paul II quoting Humanae Vitae states that "'any action, which either before, at the moment of, or after sexual intercourse, is specifically intended to prevent procreation is morally wrong. If there are reasonable grounds for spacing births, arising from the physical or psychological conditions of husband or wife, or from external circumstances, the Church teaches that then married people may take advantage of the natural cycles imminent in the reproductive system and use their marriage at precisely those times that they are infertile, and in this way control birth without offending moral principles...'" (General Audience of August 8, 1984, quoting Humanae Vitae 16). What does Natural Family Planning do for a marriage? Couples have found that NFP has made them more aware of their combined fertility, opened new avenues of communication, and has added an enriching dimension to their marriage. Many couples report improvement in their relationship with NFP. Are doctors familiar with NFP? Most physicians are not taught Natural Family Planning methods in medical school. However, a growing number of physicians are embracing Natural Family Planning methods as part of their practice. For more information on a NFP-only physician in your area contact One More Soul. I am currently using the Pill. Can I stop using it at any time? Yes! You can quit your packet at any point during your cycle. You do not need to complete this month's pills. Most women will experience a withdrawal bleed after taking their last pill. Although it can take up to two years for the Birth Control Pill to be completely out of your body, many women will return to normal cycling after three or four months of discontinuing the Pill. And we've heard the remaining pills are good for plants! Can breastfeeding mothers use NFP? Yes. During breastfeeding a woman may experience a time of natural infertility. This time, however, is variable for every woman and for every pregnancy. This time of infertility depends upon the inter-relationship of many factors including the baby and mother's needs, and the style and frequency of feeding. The Office of Natural Family Planning offers special classes for breastfeeding mothers to help them learn how to use NFP and chart while breastfeeding. Who can use Natural Family Planning? Because the Billings Ovulation Method of Natural Family Planning is based on each woman's unique and individual cycles, anyone can use the method. Whether a woman is discontinuing contraceptive medication, breastfeeding, approaching menopause, has irregular cycles, or the couple simply wants to develop a healthy awareness of fertility, the Billings Ovulation Method can provide valuable information. Through private or group instruction, couples learn to chart their signs of fertility and infertility. Frequent and confidential followup chart reviews allow the couple to gain confidence in the method and assurance of its success in their marriage. What is the cost for Natural Family Planning? Natural Family Planning is covered by many health insurance plans. If it is not, a sliding fee scale is used to cover instructions, materials, and follow-up. This fee is based on income and family size and may be waived or reduced if necessary. Once the Billings Ovulation Method is learned, charts and stamps cost approximately $4 per year. *Natural Family Planning website Diocese of Palm Beach

St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church Jensen Beach, Florida Why spend an hour with Jesus In The Blessed Sacrament? Over the next couple of months the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Committee will be presenting "Twenty-four Reasons For Wanting To Spend One Hour With Jesus In The Blessed Sacrament." Twelve will be from the teachings of the Catholic Church, and another 12 will be Biblically based. ( Reasons #6 Teaching of the Church -- Jesus wants you to do more than to go to Mass on Sunday. "Our communal worship at Mass must go together with our personal worship of Jesus in Eucharistic adoration in order that our love may be complete." (Pope John Paul II, Redeemer of Man) Biblical Teaching -- Each hour you spend with Jesus will deepen His Divine Peace in your heart. "Come to Me all of you who are weary and find life burdensome and I will refresh you..." "Cast all of you anxieties upon the One who cares for you..." "My Peace is My Gift to you." (Mt 11:28; 5:7; Jn 14:17) Come and experience Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament! Contact Lisa at or JMJLife@gmail.com for scheduling or more information. Jesus welcomes you at any hour, but hours in most need are: Monday: 1AM, 3AM ; Tuesday: 1pm ; Wednesday: 2pm; Thursday: 2AM; Friday: 1AM, 2AM, 4AM, 11AM, 12pm. Spiritual Adopt a Baby Month 5 Mommy felt me kick Today This month marks the half-way point to birth, and the baby is very active. Sleep habits develop and his mother can feel him move and stretch, particularly when she is resting. He is big and strong enough to kick hard against the outside uterine wall and dent it. Up to now, although he swam with ease in his watery world, he was too small for her to detect because the inside of the uterus has little feeling. Babies born at this age have survived. To counteract the movement for abortion, Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen recommended the spiritual adoption of unborn babies. During your earthly life, this child which you have adopted, will be known only to GOD, but in the hereafter, you will enjoy each other s company for all eternity. Jesus, Mary, Joseph, I love you very much; I beg you to spare the life of the unborn child that I have spiritually adopted, and which is in danger of being aborted. Please join us in prayerful and peaceful Vigil in front of Planned Parenthood Wed 3-5 & Fri Rt. 1 Emerald Plaza. Prayer to Avert Hurricanes God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us. Prayer Before an Election Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, as the national election of 2012 approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our City, State, and most especially, our Country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community. We ask for eyes that are free from blindness We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn... We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to Your Kingdom. We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear Thy Word, live Thy Love, and keep in the ways of Thy Truth as they follow in the footsteps of Jesus and the Apostles, the Martyrs and Saints, and all the Holy Men and Women who have gone before us in faith, and who will guide us to Your Kingdom of Justice and Peace. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ Thy Son and the Holy Spirit, through the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Amen.

St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church Stewardship An act of worship not an act of obligation Jensen Beach, Florida A Stewardship Prayer Loving Father, Discerning Vocation From the U.S. Bishops Pastoral Letter, Stewardship, A Disciple s Response Jesus calls us individually, by name. Each one of us has a personal vocation. God intends each one of us to play a unique role in carrying out the divine plan. The challenge then is to understand our role our vocation and to respond generously to this call from God. Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ leads naturally to the practice of stewardship. God calls each of us to be stewards of our personal vocations. For Parents Because we are baptized, we are called to be disciples to live out our discipleship every day. This is the common vocation of all Christians. Have you ever considered what you are doing being a parent, holding a particular job as something God has called you to? Can you look back on your life and see God s hand at work leading you to this point in your life? Living Stewardship Together Parents, share with your children how what you are doing reflects the call you have received from God. Children, share with your parents where you think God is calling you in your life. For Children A vocation isn t just for priests and sisters! God is quietly calling all of us you, too! to a vocation, a specific job or way of life. What talents has God given you? What are you good at? What is God calling you to do and be today? Ask Him! From the International Catholic Stewardship Council July 2010 Newsletter A Stewardship Moment The story of the multiplication of the loaves and the fishes is a familiar one, and has many lessons, not least of which is how our willingness to share who we are and what we have - exercising good stewardship - releases God s power and bountifulness on the world and its people. Do we realize that there is enough for all if we are willing to share? Are we aware that God is at work when we share our time, our money and our other resources in His name? You sent your Son into our lives to make us a new creation through the power of your Spirit and the healing waters of Baptism. Through this same Spirit open our hearts, rekindle our faith, and give us the courage to proclaim the Good News to those who do not know Christ or who have turned away. Then may the joy we share in Christ Jesus bring peace and hope to a troubled world much in need of experiencing your saving grace. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus your Son who lives with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. From the International Catholic Stewardship Council July 2012 Newsletter Our Goal: $129,500! Raised to Date: $ 90,405 70% of Goal! Have you returned your pledge card yet? Pledge cards may be mailed to the address on the envelope or placed in the collection basket. Envelopes and brochures can be found in the vestibule of the Church and in the Parish Office. Thank you to all who have given so generously!
