4 St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church Jensen Beach, Florida Miracles & Suffering It is very difficult to watch a loved one suffer serious illness. We pray for a miracle and it doesn t arrive. We are told that it only takes a mustard seed of faith and that prayers are answered. So we pray harder, more often, with greater emotion and ultimately say, God, Thy will be done. Still, no miracle arrives. At least not the one for which we hope. Some say we haven t done enough, but I don t believe in a petty God who sits back callously waiting for just a few more prayers to tip the scale and grant a miracle. I believe in Jesus Christ, a living God who wept at the tomb of His friend Lazarus, all the time knowing He was going to raise Lazarus from the dead. Jesus weeps with all of us as we suffer. So why does He allow it? Perhaps miracles and suffering are two sides of the same coin. Miracles are not done to grant special privilege to better people. They are for one purpose; to bring more people to faith in God by witnessing His power over illness and death. Suffering can accomplish the same objective. Sometimes as we watch terrible suffering, people who have not prayed very much begin to pray more often. Those who prayed a lot pray even more. Some who have ignored God pay attention to Him. Others, who haven t thought much about eternal salvation, speak in the hope of heaven for the loved one who is suffering. Love is shared more openly and freely. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, But even the most intense prayers do not always obtain the healing of all illnesses. Thus St. Paul must learn from the Lord that my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness, and that the sufferings to be endured can mean that in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ s afflictions for the sake of his Body, that is, the Church. Miracles draw people to faith through the power of the Risen Lord. Suffering draws people to faith through the power of the Crucified Lord. EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Help those who are in their weakest moments not to lose faith. Assure them that God is at work in both miracles and suffering. Please send your comments, thoughts and suggestions for to newevangelism@gmail.com or call Keith Thompson at Daily Mass will be celebrated in the Church starting this Monday, September 17, Pre-K through 5 th Grade Religious Education Open House All families are invited to an Open House this Sunday, September 16 th after the 9:00 am Children and Family Mass in the San Mart Inn. 5 Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 16, 2012 Carol and Tony Romano Our Volunteers of the Month for September Tony and Carol Romano were born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. They met while he was attending the University of Detroit. They have been an item for some time... two years of dating, one year engagement and now 54 years of marriage. They were married in St. Luke s church in Detroit. After getting married, they decided to migrate to the northern suburbs where they started a family. They built their dream home on a lake in the small town of Ortonville. There they joined the Parish of St. Anne. Tony became good friends with the Parish priest, a charismatic Irish man named Fr. John Hardy. Most mornings Tony could be found having breakfast at the rectory. Tony became the head of the Church Council and the director of Fundraising for the annual Church Festival where a car was raffled off. Carol headed up the annual Roast Beef dinner. She and her volunteers would usually feed approximately 1,500 roast beef dinners resulting in a profitable festival. In the Ortonville community, tony was chairman of the Library Board and a member of the Planning and Zoning Board. Along with Carol s volunteer work at the local schools, her main job was that of homemaker, wife and mother. Tony and Carol have had a lifetime together with entrepreneurship in insurance, restaurants and advertising. As residents of Stuart, they have become involved in Matthew 25:35 soup kitchen. Tony coordinates all the produce and baked goods and Carol sets up the dining room. They have recently taken the job of coordinating the volunteers for the distribution of food at the food pantry for the new Martin s Kids program. In their busy senior years, they have a growing family of two daughters, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. St. Martin de Porres Parish has become an important part of their life. They are truly blessed and so are we to have them. Thank you, Carol and Tony! Matthew 25:35 Thrift Store has several volunteer opportunities to fill, with people who aspire to serve in a charitable outreach ministry. Your participation and helpful support is needed within the store, to perform tasks such as cleaning, assembling, organizing and displaying merchandise in creative ways. We also have several cashier shifts available. On going training and support are provided in all areas. Shifts are 9:30 A.M. to 1:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday and Saturday, 9:30-1:00 PM. Afternoons and Saturdays are in most need. We also need occasional drivers, and furniture moving helpers, to pickup and deliver household furniture items within the local area. Do you have a truck, commercial sized van, or truck and trailer combo, and maybe a friend or partner willing to help with deliveries? Consider becoming a delivery driver, a delivery helper, or a delivery team for our Thrift Store, to help our customers and donors with furniture transport. Please stop by to visit our store, or call Michelle or Carl Florio at if you would like to volunteer. 6 St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church Stewardship An act of worship not an act of obligation Half-Hearted Stewards We all like to negotiate. Why else would there be so many sales on a daily basis at every store imaginable, from cell phone providers to fast-food chains? After all, who doesn t like a bargain? If we purchase one item at a discount, we have more money to purchase another desired item. And, if money is tight, sales allow us to purchase what we may not be able to otherwise. Do you ever find yourself negotiating with God? As stewards, we commit to tithing a percentage of our income each week, but we may find that an unexpected event occurs that prevents us from fulfilling that commitment in full or in part the lawnmower breaks, we need extra medicine for our kids, or a travel opportunity that we can t pass up presents itself. Perhaps we rationalize that God will understand. But what happens is that instead of trusting in God and giving Him our first fruits, we become inverted stewards. We rationalize and decide for ourselves when and how we are going to return our resources to God based on what is left over after satisfying our wants and needs. We keep the control and continue the planning and put God in the backseat, because we know, He will understand. When we allow ourselves to remain in control, we do ourselves a huge disservice and we begin to lose the trust we have in God. We don t let Him take the wheel because we are just too afraid to let it go. Giving to God out of what we make isn t about tabulating a list of what we need and seeing what is leftover for God. It s not about fearfully placing an envelope with a tithe of our first fruits in the collection basket each week. Giving to God is about gratefulness wanting to return a portion to God for all the blessings He has given us. In doing so, we know we will never match His generosity, but we receive graces knowing that we are putting God first and trusting He will never let us down. Don t be a half-hearted Steward. Don t negotiate with God. After all, whatever He has planned for our lives is far better than what we could ever buy for ourselves. Copyright Jensen Beach, Florida A Stewardship Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, with hearts on fire we welcome you. You approach us and walk with us. Remove all that restrains us from recognizing you; and whatever stops us from putting aside everything else to follow you. Open the Scriptures to us. Teach us to know you and to see you and to hear you in the assembly of the Baptized, in the ministries of the Church, in the proclamation of the Word, and in the Breaking of the Bread. School us in the ways of the Gospel. Coach us in the ways of Christian Stewardship. Show us how to use wisely the blessings given to us. Show us how to take good care of those whose happiness and well-being you have entrusted to us. Bless our lively exchange as we discuss all that has happened, and as we continue to dream of all that might be. Astonish us, when we have little sense and are so slow to believe the prophets. Encourage us, when we are overwhelmed. Strengthen us, when we are so easily frightened. Challenge our complacency and our temptation to quit. Stir the embers that have grown cold. And more than anything else, stay with us, Lord. For the kingdom and the power and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. From the International Catholic Council on Stewardship September 2012 Our Goal: $129,500! Raised to Date: $ 102,120 79% of Goal! Have you returned your pledge card yet? Pledge cards may be mailed to the address on the envelope or placed in the collection basket. Envelopes and brochures can be found in the vestibule of the Church and in the Parish Office. Thank you to all who have given so generously!

7 Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 16, 2012 Thank you to all who have a weekly hour! It is because of you that others can come before our Lord any time of day! ** If you are frequenting the Chapel but do not have an hour, OR if you have yet to visit the Lord in the Chapel, know that you are wanted and needed! We humbly ask everyone to commit to only one hour each week with our Lord so that Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will stay strong. The Hours in most need of adorers: Monday - 1am, 3am; Tuesday - 1am, 6am, 7am; Thursday - 7am; Friday 1am, 2am. Perpetual Adoration Committee is looking to strengthen Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at St. Martin de Porres. The goal is to strengthen the ministry by adding more adorers and by adding more hours. Are you interested in helping? Perhaps a 9-day novena will help you know if God is calling you to this. Whether you have committed to an hour or have been unable to, we invite all to be a part of this group. Call Lisa at or JMJLife@gmail.com if you are interested in participating. Spiritual Adopt a Baby Month 7 I Can Look Around Beginning this month our baby uses all four senses. Our babies eyelids open and close, and the eyes look around. Our baby can hear, taste, touch, cough, yawn, and hiccup. Our baby now can recognizes its mother s voice. Our babies grip is even stronger now than it will be after birth. The hair on our babies head is growing longer and the down covering the rest of the body is disappearing. During this time our baby will receive antibodies from mother providing our baby with immunity to a wide variety of diseases. To counteract the movement for abortion, Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen recommended the spiritual adoption of unborn babies. During your earthly life, this child which you have adopted, will be known only to GOD, but in the hereafter, you will enjoy each other s company for all eternity. Jesus, Mary, Joseph, I love you very much; I beg you to spare the life of the unborn child that I have spiritually adopted, and which is in danger of being aborted. Please join us in prayerful and peaceful Vigil in front of Planned Parenthood Wed 3-5 & Fri Rt. 1 Emerald Plaza.
