8 St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church YOUTH MASS Jensen Beach, Florida After a period of prayerful reflection and discussion, the decision has been made to abrogate the 5:00 PM Sunday Mass for the time being and instead celebrate a weekday Mass for our Life Teen youth and their families in the Youth Room. This special Liturgy is being inaugurated in an effort to bring our teens closer to Christ in a very personal and intimate way and to help foster ever greater active, full and conscious participation at the Holy Mass. We will also be celebrating a special Edge Mass as well periodically as part of our Confirmation Prep Program. Beginning then on Wednesday, October 10 at 6:30 PM, all Life Teen members and their families, Adult Core Group, and all those teens and young adults who are or were a part of Franciscan Lead or who would like to become more actively involved in Edge / Life Teen Ministry are welcome to come and celebrate with us the Holy Mass every other Wednesday evening. Praise and Worship songs along with more traditional hymns will aid us in lifting out hearts and souls to God as we gather around our Table of Thanksgiving the Holy Eucharist. Please keep all of our children, teens and young adults in your prayers! Where Does Prayer Come From? Scripture gives a clear answer to this question. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains: Where does prayer come from? Whether prayer is expressed in words or gestures, it is the whole man who prays. But in naming the source of prayer, Scripture speaks sometimes of the soul or the spirit, but most often of the heart (more than a thousand times). According to Scripture, it is the heart that prays. If our heart is far from God, the words of prayer are in vain. (CCC 2562). The Catechism also teaches us that prayer stems from the fact that man has forever been in search of God, but that God calls man first. Throughout the course of history the same question has been asked; Is there a God? History itself reveals a fairly substantial answer to this question. The history of man in every part of the world, in every culture and in every time, has embraced a belief in some form of god or gods. The manifestations of this belief are displayed in monumental works on the part of man. In spite of incomplete understanding and often false portrayals of God, throughout the course of time man has attempted to understand and respond to God in glorious ways. Great edifices were built, songs written, stories told, art created, sacrifices made The list is nearly endless and truly amazing when you consider the great lengths man has gone to create, with his own hands, something worthy of God Himself. From these great works in the name of God, it is not irrational to believe that God has hardwired man with an innate recognition of his infinite presence. In the quiet corners of our minds, we simply seem to know. Yet we are drawn into the world through every sense our mortal bodies can provide. We hear, taste, feel, see, and smell. Urges, hungers, wants, needs and desires draw us away from our spiritual nature and demand our attention to the physical aspects of living. For those who profess to not believe in God, there is an answer too. God granted us free will. Included in the free will He gave is the option to choose not to believe in the One from whom it was given. For some, this is simply a position of laziness, preferring not to think about the subject. Life offers many distractions, in ever increasing numbers, that enable a lax approach towards God for at least some amount of time and perhaps, sadly, for an entire life. For others, the choice to not believe in God is a reaction to suffering; an angry response that reasons, If there is a God, how could He let this happen? Of course there are also those who spend considerable time pondering the existence of God and forcefully conclude that He is not possible and that everything in the universe is some kind of cosmic accident or a series of events with a purely scientific explanation. I am sure there are many other reasons why individuals choose not to believe in God. Perhaps the greatest indication that the Creator has hardwired his creatures to know He exists is the simple fact that at some point in time, at a critical moment in our lives, perhaps a time of great light or great darkness, we simply wonder. The question repeats itself in our minds as it has throughout history, Is there a God? Perhaps the question itself is one of God s mysterious means of answering. Why would we ask this question or even consider prayer if God was not calling each and every one of us? EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Hear God s call and answer with prayers from the heart. 9 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 30, 2012 Diocese of Palm Beach 9995 North Military Trail P.O. Box Palm Beach Gardens, Florida (561) Fax (561) Office of THE BISHOP September 29/30, 2012 Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Lord: Next weekend, that of October 6/7, is the beginning of the Respect Life program of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as well as that of Respect Life Sunday. The theme for this year's program is Faith Opens Our Eyes to Human Life in All Its Grandeur and Beauty. What a poignant theme to reflect upon as we anticipate the beginning of the Year of Faith, October 11, invoked by our Holy Father. During the Year of Faith our nation will observe a shameful anniversary. In 2013 we will mark the fortieth year from of the tragic Supreme Court decision in Roe V. Wade which legalized abortion in our country. In addition to legalizing abortion, the Supreme Court's decision eroded respect for human life and further opened the door to accepting death as a means to deal with personal and societal problems. Within that forty year span more and more obstacles to life, such as euthanasia and assisted suicide, have come to be seen as acceptable practices. At this time within our nation's history, we face a growing threat to our religious liberty, especially as it affects our ability to live our faith and practice our moral convictions in regard to the sanctity of life at all stages. As men and women of faith we have every right, as well as a moral obligation, to make our voices heard in promoting legislation that protects the gift of life from the moment of conception until natural death. We must express our opposition to legalized abortion. We cannot have our right to religious liberty ignored so that the Church is forced to provide insurance coverage that includes not only contraception but also abortion inducing drugs. Nor can we stand quietly by while we are refused federal funding for Church programs because they do not include practices such as abortion. The coming days are especially significant as we immediately prepare and inform ourselves for an important national election. The time before us is more critical than ever and our faith cannot be divorced from how we vote. We need to support positions and candidates that promote the sanctity of life. We need to support and vote YES for Amendment 6 on the Florida ballot which will prohibit the use of public funds for abortions as well as allow legislation to require parental consent for a minor child who wishes to have an abortion. We need to vote YES on Amendment 8 which protects our religious liberty by eliminating existing language that discriminates against churches and religious institutions that provide social services. Above all, as people of faith, we must remember that prayer is our most important means of promoting a culture of life within our society. We must join our efforts to our prayers as citizens of this great nation in fostering a culture of life and in ensuring that our country lives by the principles for which it was founded. As we begin the Respect Life program as well as the Year of Faith, may we always see that faith and life are part of one whole. With every prayerful wish, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito Bishop of Palm Beach

It is because others have made a commitment that we can offer extended adoration. Our baby can hear, taste, touch, cough, yawn, and hiccup. Our baby now can recognize its mother s voice. Our babies grip is even stronger now than it will be after birth. The hair on our babies head is growing longer and the down covering the rest of the body is disappearing. During this time our baby will receive antibodies from mother providing our baby with immunity to a wide variety of diseases. To counteract the movement for abortion, Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen recommended the spiritual adoption of unborn babies. During your earthly life, this child which you have adopted, will be known only to GOD, but in the hereafter, you will enjoy each other s company for all eternity. Jesus, Mary, Joseph, I love you very much; I beg you to spare the life of the unborn child that I have spiritually adopted, and which is in danger of being aborted. Please join us in prayerful and peaceful Vigil in front of Planned Parenthood Wed 3-5 & Fri Rt. 1 Emerald Plaza.
