4 St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church Jensen Beach, Florida Living the Eucharist Sometimes I hear criticism aimed at one particular priest or another. Rather than complain, we should ask ourselves how we re doing as priests. Of course we are not ordained priests, but in baptism we become part of the common priesthood and, as St. Peter wrote in his first letter, as the King s priests we are chosen to proclaim the wonderful acts of God. Another way to visualize our responsibility as priests is not only to receive the Eucharist but to Live the Eucharist. The following steps for Living the Eucharist were outlined in an article by Fr. Claudio Barriga, S.J., (Delegate of the International Director of the Apostleship of Prayer, Rome, 2008.) 1. Begin by being aware of your baptism. On the day you were baptized God adopted you into his family and called you his beloved child. 2. Accept the friendship Jesus offers you. You are dear to him and He loves you very much. He opens his heart to you and wishes to be always in your heart. 3. Offer yourself and your day every morning. Respond to His love with your simple everyday life. Ask that you may do so with the mind and heart of Jesus (Philippians 2:5). Offer all your prayers, works, joys, and sufferings; offer every thought, word, and deed; offer every breath you take and every beat of your heart to God in union with Jesus heart. Ask him for the grace to live your whole day according to his will. As you offer yourself, offer as well your family, friends and neighbors, the Church, the poor, and all of humanity, living your baptismal priesthood by interceding for all. 4. Renew your offering throughout the day. Keep telling Jesus during the day that you want your works and actions to be His, that you desire to live with Him and in Him. He takes in our joys and our sufferings. Remind yourself that your life and the lives of your brothers and sisters are meaningful, and because you have offered yourself and them, you are all united to Jesus own life. This is the way to be an apostle, sharing Christ s mission of making his Father s love visible to all humankind. 5. Experience the Eucharist as intrinsic to your daily offering. Participate in Sunday Mass and, as much as possible, in weekday Mass. Join your own life-offering together with the priest who is celebrating and with the whole Church. Put your life on that altar and give it to the Father together with Jesus life-offering. 6. Unite your personal mission with the whole Church s mission. By baptism you are a priest. By intercession you bring your brothers and sisters before the Lord. By your daily offering you give your life to God, willing to collaborate in his mission. Now you join your life and your prayer to the whole Church s mission and prayer by praying for the Holy Father. The Pope is the Vicar of Christ who carries the needs of the Church and the world in his heart. Each month he proposes two of his main concerns, asking people to join him in prayer. Learn about and pray for these intentions, offering your day for them. Be open to concrete ways that God may be calling you to address them. 7. Make an examen or evening review. Do not just ask yourself "What did I do wrong today?" but rather "What has God done with the gift that I gave Him at the beginning of the day?" You will also see what you have done wrong, but it is more important to see what God has done right. Ask for His forgiveness and His help to correct what is wrong. The next day, begin again, putting your life in His hands once more. 8. Go regularly to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession helps you be aware of your own self-deceits and strengthens your desire to give the Lord all your life. 9. Be close to Mary, loving her tenderly. Carry Mary in your heart, and seek her as the best companion for your journey with Jesus. She knows better than anyone what it means to give all one s life to the Lord. What words can I use to offer myself to God every day? Express your offering in the way that is most meaningful to you. Use your own words or those of someone else. There are many forms of the daily offering, ancient and modern. EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Be a priest. Make a daily offering of your life to God. Please send your comments, thoughts and suggestions for EVANGELISM IN ACTION to newevangelism@gmail.com or call Keith Thompson at

7 St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church Jensen Beach, Florida Why spend an hour with Jesus In The Blessed Sacrament? Over the next couple of months the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Committee will be presenting "Twenty-four Reasons For Wanting To Spend One Hour With Jesus In The Blessed Sacrament." Twelve will be from the teachings of the Catholic Church, and another 12 will be Biblically based. ( Read the bulletin each week to get 2 more reasons. Reasons #3 Teachings of the Church -- Jesus is counting on you because the Eucharist is the center of life. "Every member of the Church must be vigilant in seeing that the sacrament of Love shall be at the center of the life of the people of God so that through all the manifestations of worship due Him shall be given back â love for loveâ and truly become the life of our souls." (Pope John Paul II, Redeemer of Man) Biblical Reason -- The specific way that Jesus asks you to love Him in return is to spend one quiet hour with Him in the Blessed Sacrament. "Where your treasure is, there is your heart..." "Could you not watch one hour with Me?" (Mt 6:21; 26:40) Come and experience Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament! Contact Lisa at or JMJLife@gmail.com for scheduling or more information. Jesus welcomes you at any hour, but hours in most need are: Monday: 1AM, 3AM Tuesday: 1pm Wednesday: 2pm Thursday: 2AM Friday: 1AM, 2AM, 4AM, 11AM, 12pm Prayer to Avert Hurricanes God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us. Spiritual Adopt a Baby Month 5 Mommy felt me kick Today This month marks the half-way point to birth, and the baby is very active. Sleep habits develop and his mother can feel him move and stretch, particularly when she is resting. He is big and strong enough to kick hard against the outside uterine wall and dent it. Up to now, although he swam with ease in his watery world, he was too small for her to detect because the inside of the uterus has little feeling. Babies born at this age have survived. To counteract the movement for abortion, Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen recommended the spiritual adoption of unborn babies. During your earthly life, this child which you have adopted, will be known only to GOD, but in the hereafter, you will enjoy each other s company for all eternity. Jesus, Mary, Joseph, I love you very much; I beg you to spare the life of the unborn child that I have spiritually adopted, and which is in danger of being aborted. Please join us in prayerful and peaceful Vigil in front of Planned Parenthood Wed 3-5 & Fri Rt. 1 Emerald Plaza. David Olio Prayer Before an Election Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, as the national election of 2012 approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our City, State, and most especially, our Country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community. We ask for eyes that are free from blindness We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn.. We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to Your Kingdom. We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear Thy Word, live Thy Love, and keep in the ways of Thy Truth as they follow in the footsteps of Jesus and the Apostles, the Martyrs and Saints, and all the Holy Men and Women who have gone before us in faith, and who will guide us to Your Kingdom of Justice and Peace. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ Thy Son and the Holy Spirit, through the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Amen.

8 St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church Stewardship An act of worship not an act of obligation Jensen Beach, Florida Nuntiandi), Pope Paul VI stressed the importance of not only living in Christ, but SPEAKING about our life in Christ with others. We must have the courage to invite others to join us in our relationship with Christ. This includes other Catholics, and those who no longer practice their Catholic faith. Good Stewards are Evangelizers Adapted from an article by Barbara Vite, Director of Parish Stewardship, Archdiocese of Milwaukee Pope Benedict XVI has announced a Year of Faith beginning October 11, 2012, and dioceses around the world are preparing for a New Evangelization. What s new about a concept which has always been the core mission of the Church? We are receiving a wake up call, reminding us of the urgent need to reach out and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Good stewards are evangelizers and understand the need to share their faith with others. In their pastoral letter on stewardship, the United States bishops wrote: Every member of the Church is called to evangelize, and the practice of authentic Christian stewardship inevitably leads to evangelization. As stewards of the mysteries of God (cf. 1 Cor. 4:1), people desire to tell others about them and about the light they shed on human life, to share the graces and gifts they have received from God, especially knowledge of Christ Jesus. Every member of the Church is called to evangelize. But how do Catholics answer that call? First, as Catholic Christians we need to be mindful of the renewal of our own Baptismal promises at Easter and educate ourselves in our faith. Good stewards understand the need for ongoing formation and catechesis in their ever-deepening relationship with Christ. Secondly, we must never forget the witness value of our own lives. Through our everyday actions, lived in Christ, we give the world the clearest sign of God s presence among us and within the Church. Third, inspired by the Holy Spirit, we must proclaim the Good News in words. In his 1975 pastoral letter, On Evangelization in the Modern World (Evangelii Fourth, we must be willing to dialogue in a spirit of love and respect. We must listen with tolerance to others disbelief, doubts, pain and suffering. Our sharing of the Gospel should not be demanding or coercive. The sole desire of authentic evangelizers is to bestow freely with patience and love what they themselves have freely received. Just before he ascended into heaven, Jesus gave this mandate: Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15). Evangelization is not an option. It is part of our Baptismal commitment and it goes to the very heart of our faith. Exercising good stewardship of the Gospel implies the willingness to share it with others. From the International Catholic Stewardship Council July 2012 Newsletter A Stewardship Prayer Loving Father, You sent your Son into our lives to make us a new creation through the power of your Spirit and the healing waters of Baptism. Through this same Spirit open our hearts, rekindle our faith, and give us the courage to proclaim the Good News to those who do not know Christ or who have turned away. Then may the joy we share in Christ Jesus bring peace and hope to a troubled world much in need of experiencing your saving grace. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus your Son who lives with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
