The child has no inhibitions about expressing the swing of emotions because the child knows that the embrace will continue despite the expression of emotion. PLACING OUR TRUST IN GOD In today's Gospel story, the Lord Jesus embraces and blesses the children whom the apostles tried to prevent from coming to him. He simply states that "whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it" (Mark 10:15). Perhaps we can make a connection between what psychologists say about the trust level of the developing child and the words of Jesus. Part of our Christian journey involves learning how to place our trust in God. Sometimes this is a challenge, especially when bad things happen to us or to those whom we love. Just as the small child who fully trusts the loving parent moves through very different expressions of emotion, so, too, when we fully trust God, should we be comfortable moving from expressions of joy to cries of lament. This is an honest way of living the Christian life. Those in whom we have placed our trust are usually those with whom we feel we can share our feelings of deep joy and sharp disappointment. This is the kind of relationship that we are called to cultivate with our God. To accept the kingdom of God like a child may mean a change in the way we approach God. We are assured that when we are honest about who we are, honest with God about our deepest longings, joys, and sorrows, God's loving embrace will remain always. Young At Heart... 4th Thursday, 12 Noon TOWARD HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS From the beginning of creation, God intended for people to live together in relationship with one another. Much of scripture shows us how to do this as it illustrates and clarifies God s plans. The readings this weekend guide us in the value and care of our relationships. Specifically, the Gospel focuses on the circumstances of failed relationships. Unlike the Pharisees, we would do well not to focus on the laws that pertain to failed relationships, but concentrate instead on what God really intended for us. Healthy bonds require a lot of our time and energy. They certainly require trust and honesty. Jesus demonstrated a deep commitment to his friends and to us. As our brother, he gave his very life for us. Children work hard at friendships. They trust, forgive, and love without conditions. The final words of today s Gospel invite us to welcome Jesus and the people of our relationships with the fresh enthusiasm of a child. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. The second collection at all Masses next weekend is for church maintenance. The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary, one of the best known of all Catholic devotions, and one of the most popular devotions in Christendom, and the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on October 7. We will recite the Rosary 30 minutes before each Mass during the month of October. The month of October is Respect Life Month. We are called to respect the life of the unborn, children pre-diagnosed with Down syndrome, the elderly and numerous human life issues. We want to be part of a society that makes affirmation and protection of human rights its primary objective and its boast The theme for this year is Every Life is Worth Living. Each of our lives, and every life, is worth living, no matter the circumstances. As Christians, we know that suffering is not the end of the story; it can be the path by which the Lord perfects us in love and leads us to Heaven. We are called to respect and protect our lives and the lives of others, and we are called to be the hands and feet of Christ to all, especially the most vulnerable. We have been given one life to live, which has inestimable value how will we choose to live it? Altar Serving Training!! Training classes for new Altar Servers will be in Saturday, Nov. 7 & 14 from 9am-3pm. Lunch will be provided. I currently have received (6) applications...if you are interested please fill out an application and return it to the parish office or drop it in the collection basket at Mass. Applications are on the tables in the back of the church. Ministry Appreciation Dinner! We are most grateful to the parishioners who serve in the ministries of our church. You are truly a blessing to all of us. Our Church is vibrant because of your service in these ministries. By working together as members of one family, we continue to make the kingdom of God present in our community. Our 10th Annual Ministry Appreciation Dinner will be on Wednesday, October 14 at 6:00 pm in Presentation Hall. There is a sign up sheet on the center table in the back of church. 3 Pope Francis Prayer Intentions for October GENERAL Human trafficking That human trafficking, the modern form of slavery, may be eradicated. MISSION Mission in Asia That with missionary spirit the Christian communities of Asia may announce the gospel to those who are still awaiting it. The Annual Parish Drawdown and Silent Auction is Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. in Presentation Hall. This drawdown is to assist our parish with the rising cost of insurance and maintenance of our buildings and other parish projects. The success of the drawdown and silent auction depends on everyone s participation. Tickets are $100 for a chance to win $10,000. If you are unable to purchase a whole ticket, you may share with someone for $50 or three people for $25. We encourage every adult parishioner to actively participate by purchasing a drawdown ticket and donating items for the silent auction. Silent auction items can be dropped off at the parish office. Tickets are available after Mass and also in the Parish office Monday-Friday from 10am-5pm. A Memorial Mass for St. John Parishioners and Friends who died during the year will be celebrated on Monday, November 2 at 6:00pm. We invite all parishioners who lost a loved one to join in this celebration. A slide presentation featuring the deceased will be given. Please send a picture of your loved one for the slide presentation. This picture will be returned to you after the celebration. Please call the parish office by October 16 and let us know how many family members will attend. Refreshments will be served after Mass. RCIA-The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults has begun. We thank God for the wonderful candidates who have joined and offer them our prayerful support. This phase of RCIA is know as the Inquiry Phase-a time to question, to inquire and see if the Catholic Faith is for your. RCIA sessions are held every Tuesday at 6:30 pm in the Parish Office Building. We are still welcoming new members. The Rachel s Vineyard ministry for healing after abortion is having a retreat the weekend of Oct. 30 Nov. 1, 2015 at the Archdiocese of New Orleans Retreat Center, 5500 St. Mary St., Metairie, LA Cost: $170; financial assistance available, if necessary. This Catholic healing retreat is open to everyone whose life has been touched by abortion. All faiths welcome. GOD S WORD TODAY Our journey of faith through these Sundays of Ordinary Time has been marked by calls to re-examine the attitudes and behaviors that shape our relationships. Today we are called to take a keen look at our understanding of the sacrament of marriage. Divorce, as presented in today s television shows and movies, is often seen as the first resort when a relationship is in trouble. In this view, marriage is depicted as something that is as easily thrown away as a paper cup. If we believe that Jesus Christ is at the foundation of every sacramental marriage, then today s worldview is simply turned on its head. As we listen to today s scriptures, let us be mindful of family, friends, and members of our communities who have struggled with the difficult issues of irreconcilable marriages. It tottered for a hundred years or so and then virtually disappeared. It served an isolated and persecuted church well, but once people began seeking baptism for economic and political privilege, a real pastoral crisis exploded. There were more lukewarm Christians afoot, and some barbarians rampaging through the ruins accepted baptism just because their leaders did. As the old structures collapsed, people who still sought some sort of public conversion scampered off to the desert to live in monastic isolation. Penance disappeared from the parish scene, and the old bench where hungry penitents used to beg for prayers was empty. Some bishops faced the crisis by inventing alternate means of discipline, all more private than public. A person might be asked to refrain from receiving Communion for a time, or even to accept some sort of corporal punishment (the pedigree of the stocks and scarlet letters of colonial America). This had the effect of separating the sinner from the prayerful intercession of the gathered church, and made an already bad situation worse.
