A message from our Rector Holy Week / Easter 2016 Dear Friends, I hope that you have been taking advantage of the opportunities provided for the St. Paul s community to respond to the Church s call to make Lent a season marked by prayer, the study of Scripture, self-denial and acts of charity. Our focus now turns to Holy Week and Easter. Beginning on Palm Sunday, we encounter the final days of Jesus earthly ministry. If we allow it to be, Holy Week can be a powerful and transformative week in our lives whether we are walking the Way of the Cross again or for the first time. I am pleased that we are welcoming The Reverend Dr. Tony Lewis, who will be preaching from Maundy Thursday through the Great Vigil of Easter. He is a remarkable preacher, brilliant scholar, and thoughtful priest. I hope that you will make the time to join us on Palm Sunday, throughout the week, and specifically on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and at the Great Vigil of Easter or on Easter morning. And, invite others friends or neighbors to join you on Palm Sunday and Easter Day to encounter the God who lived, died, and rose again to show the world the way of peace, mercy, and love. With my prayers for a Blessed Holy Week and Joyous Easter, I remain, Your friend and Rector, (The Rev d) Robert A. Picken Lenten Messages from Episcopal leaders Most Reverend Michael Curry Watch Lenten messages from our Presiding Bishop, the Most Reverend Michael Curry, and our own Bishop, the Rt. Reverend Prince Singh. Presiding Bishop Curry s message is accessible at Bishop Singh s message can be found at Right Reverend Prince Singh 2

Water for South Sudan series On March 6, Angelique Stevens, Water for South Sudan Board Member, shared stories from her recent two-month tour of South Sudan to evaluate 80 of the 259 wells installed by Water for South Sudan for functionality, water purity, and effects on those served. She found that all 80 of the wells were still functioning, and that all had been repaired by villagers trained in well maintenance. The wells have led to better nutrition, health, and innovations in all segments of village life. Nancy Lyke, Dorothy Phillips, Carol Panzer, and Neal Panzer listening to Angelique Stevens discuss conditions in South Sudan. On March 13, : Linda Sue Park, Newberry Award Winning author, discussed her book, A Long Walk to Water, an account of Salva Dut s journey from his war torn village to Rochester and St. Paul s, and the subsequent formation of Water for South Sudan in

Lent comes for St. Paul s youth On February 7, the last Sunday before Lent, St. Paul s children received Mite Boxes during the 10:00 am service to fill with donations during Lent (top row), then after the service they celebrated Mardi Gras with a pancake breakfast (bottom row). Shrove Tuesday for Children On February 7, the children met for a special pancake breakfast during Sunday school to kick off the beginning of Lent. The youth (middle-high school) worked with Mr. Welker by setting tables, decorating with colorful beads and crepe paper, and helping to serve our young children. Each child was given a special Lenten booklet called, Love Life, Live Lent, which gives simple yet impactful activities to accomplish during the 40 days of Lent. They also received unique mite boxes: empty water bottles with a slot for their change, with all money raised going towards the Water for South Sudan project. A special thank you to Mrs. Laura Hayden for creating the labeled bottles and for speaking to the children during the breakfast on this important cause. Lenten Pretzel Making! In Germany, pretzels are associated with Lent with the overlapping strands of pretzel dough representing the arms of a person folded in prayer. A prayer book page used by Catharine of Cleves showed St. Bartholomew with pretzel around him to represent good luck, prosperity and spiritual wholeness. The children enjoyed kneading, twisting, baking and eating the pretzels! And they even helped clean up. 5

Adult Christian Formation Opportunities Lenten Soup n Study: Jesus is not here; He is Risen A Look at the Resurrection Narratives in the Gospels On Thursdays during Lent, we gathered in the Parish Hall for a soup supper. After a meal together, the adults studied the stories of Jesus Resurrection found in the Gospels, while the children participated in their own programs. The Rector led the adult programs. At the end of the evening, we gathered for the Office of Compline (Night Prayer). Shown with Rob are Gwen Cheney (above) reading St. Paul s account of Christ s resurrection, and (right) Vince & Nancy Reale, Kitty MacDowell, Gary Scott, Rita Lancy, and Neal and Carol Panzer. Want to read the whole Bible? If you d like to read the whole Bible with a group, come on March 20 at 9am to the Vestry Room to talk about how we might read the Bible together over the next year. One option would be to use The Bible Challenge (published by the Forward Movement) that presents Bible readings for each day with a reflection, prayer and self-reflection question. We will consider possible resources, propose a schedule, and get a sense of interest. If you cannot attend that meeting but would like to participate, contact Nancy Grear at or ngrear@stpaulsec.org. 6

Adult Christian Formation Opportunities 9AM Adult Formation Gospel Study From January through May we are studying the Gospels: who they were written for, how they are similar, and how they are different. There are three sessions for each Gospel: 1) an overview, 2) its teachings, and 3) its account of Jesus Passion. Presenters are Rob Picken, Jay Burkardt, John Hazzard and Nancy Grear. In January and February we looked at the Gospels of Mark and Matthew. In April and May we will discuss Luke and John as follows: Luke - April 3, 10 and 17; and John - May 1, 8 and 15. Shown leading a session on Mark s Gospel is John Hazzard. Building a Stronger St. Paul s One Saturday * A Stronger St. Paul s May 21: Invite-Welcome-Connect INVITE-WELCOME-CONNECT is a simple strategy for growing and strengthening St Paul's so that we can bring the Good News of Christ to the people of Rochester. We will learn simple tools to help us introduce St. Paul's to more people. Consultant Mary Parmer will offer clear, concrete, and creative methods to assist us in strengthening our newcomer ministries and the whole church. ALL members of St. Paul's are encouraged to participate! No charge and lunch and childcare provided. RSVP: To Judy Loveland (judy@stpaulsec.org) Our consultant, Mary Palmer, is a member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas. She developed the Diocese of Texas Newcomer Ministry Project to help congregations Invite, Welcome, and Connect visitors and new members. She has taken the work to more than 26 Episcopal dioceses. Clergy and lay leaders from congregations and dioceses across the country have attended this dynamic training and report measurable results after using the materials. This transformative newcomer ministry process has brought new energy and spirit to congregations and sustained real growth where the essentials of Invite*Welcome*Connect are followed. The Rev. 8 Forward Day by Day Community The Forward Day by Day website hosts a nice online community of people who share how the daily readings and meditation intersect with their lives. Scripture readings are an essential part of the daily prayer practice set forth in Forward Day by Day. A set of Scripture readings- Psalms plus Old and New Testament verses- is listed for every day, and from these readings the Forward Day by Day authors select a passage and write a meditation that reflects upon it. Visitors to the site at may ask questions and share their thoughts. At the Annual Meeting I was pleased to discuss the importance of this ministry and am grateful for the positive response. If you have joined St. Paul s as a new member in the last few years, perhaps you already have a provision in your will to include a gift to St. Paul s Church. If not, please consider adding a simple codicil to your will to specify St. Paul s as a benefactor. Such gifts to our church ensure that St. Paul s will flourish, to serve our children and our grandchildren for years to come. After the February 7 service, Dr. David Baskeyfield, Music Director at Christ Church Pittsford, regaled listeners with an organ recital. During the March 6 Evensong, our choir sang music of Stanford, Vaughan Williams and Palestrina; and after that service, Dr. Robert Poovey, our own Director of Music, performed music of Johann Sebastian Bach and Cesar Franck. 10 RAIHN Update For "RAIHNing Angels" (This is the work of an ECW president Pamela Stewart at least 20 years ago in a Chicago ECW newsletter.) "May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart. May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace. May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy. And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done." How RAIHN makes a difference in Rochester: 2015 Statistics: Served 32 families in our shelter program - 41 adults & 57 children; Served 98 individuals (30 adult females, 11 adult males and 57 children); Served 26 families in our aftercare program; Served 13,440 meals; Helped 85% of families graduate into permanent housing; Assisted 91% of families remain in permanent housing after 1 year; Utilized over 1500 volunteers who donated 16,525 volunteer hours to staff our shelter program (The value of their time is $148,725!); Provided shelter for an average stay of 42 days per family; Provided 4,123 bed-nights (compared to 4,068 bed-nights in 2014); Turned away 319 families because RAIHN facilities were full. In the past 11 years, RAIHN in our region has served 357 families 1,119 individuals, including 655 children. Half of the families served by RAIHN had at least one person working or attending school.
