1 Pflaum Gospel Weeklies Assessment Program Pretest Test Test (Word) Answers Unit 1 Test Test (Word) Answers Unit 2 Test Test (Word) Answers Unit 3 Test Test (Word) Answers Unit 4 Test Test (Word) Answers Final Test Test Test (Word) Answers Assessment of student comprehension is important for all disciplines. In addition to measuring student progress, assessment gives the teacher an opportunity to gauge the effectiveness of his or her teaching methods. Testing in a faith formation program, however, comes with a special warning. Religion tests are not faith tests. The assessment instruments used in a catechetical program demonstrate a student s literacy in the language and the content of the faith. Teachers and administrators need to be careful not to interpret success on a religion test as a sign of a child s faith. Equating the two is directly contrary to the purpose of catechesis as an element in the initiation process. In addition to the reviews and quizzes found in the teaching guides, the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies Faith Formation Program provides an assessment program for its top three levels Good News, Venture, and Visions. For children in pre-kindergarten through the first grade, participation in activities and the class process will provide the teacher with all the needed assessment of progress. For children in grades two through eight, the Pflaum assessment program offers six simple tools: A pretest to be administered at the beginning of the year. This test will give the teacher a snapshot of how much each student already knows about the content of the faith for the upcoming level. Four unit tests. These tests are to be administered after each eight-week unit of the program. A final test. This test is administered after all thirtytwo sessions of the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies have been completed There is also an answer key for each test. In addition to the answers, the key correlates each question and its answer with the weekly sessions, with What the Church Believes and Teaches, and with the scope and sequence chart. Because the tests are designed and intended to help the instruction process not to assign rank or value to the students, they do not include grading criteria. The tests are provided in two formats PDF s for easy duplication and formatted Word documents that give the teacher, should he or she wish, the ability to customize the tests by changing, adding, or removing questions. Permission is granted to duplicate and use these tests only as a supplement to the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies.
