2 Bo!Jowjubujpo!up!uif!Fbtufs!Wjhjm! With the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, Lent comes to an end. As the altar is stripped bare, we enter into the peace and glory of the Sacred Triduum. We free ourselves of the mundane and begin the Paschal Fast and anticipation. Unlike the Lenten penitential fast, the Paschal Fast may be likened to a bride and groom fasting before the wedding banquet because they are too excited to eat. On Good Friday and Holy Saturday, we fast before the Easter Vigil in anticipation of being filled up with the risen Christ. We gather quietly on Good Friday, listen to scripture and come forward in faith and humility to venerate the wood of the cross. With crescendo-like anticipation, we fast and pray through Holy Saturday until the glory of the risen Lord burst forth at the Easter Vigil. Hungry now and excited, the church gathers in the darkness and lights a new fire that will make this night bright for us. From the bonfire burning outside the church building, first the Paschal candle is lit, followed by all the people s candles. The light is spread from one person to another until the whole church is ablaze with light the light of Christ. The Easter Vigil is the summit and source of Christian life. We celebrate in as grand and solemn a way as we can the central and core mystery of our Christian faith. The second part of the Easter Vigil is the Liturgy of the Word. We listen to the scriptural story of our salvation our journey out of darkness into light, out of death into life. In acclaiming the gospel, we welcome back the Alleluia which went unsung during the 40 days of Lent. The third part of the Easter Vigil is the sacramental initiation of the catechumens. Here we witness the blessing of the water, immersion in water, and the rise of the newborn children of God from the waters of baptism. Then christened with the fragrant oil of confirmation, they are led to partake of the banquet of Eucharist. The Easter Vigil is an occasion for us to reflect on what kind of liturgical life will sustain us on our Paschal journey and what manner of praying will be a treasure of faith we can hand on to our children. Leave your watch at home. The Easter Vigil lasts significantly longer than Sunday Mass. Do not leave older children at home. The Vigil has much that will appeal to their senses: lighting of candles, singing of psalms, ringing of bells, sprinkling with blessed water, fragrant clouds of incense, colorful flowers and banners. Come prepared to be a participant rather than a spectator. This is the greatest night of all the year. In our prayers and song; in our sacraments and silence; here in our midst, Christ is risen; Christ is risen indeed! On March 31st at 7:30 PM, extraordinary grace awaits us all. Fbtufs!Nfnpsjbm!Gmpxfst! The celebration of Easter is an experience of Life. We remember the New Life Christ gave us once He rose from the dead. This feast is remembered for fifty days. From Easter to Pentecost, we gather as Easter people celebrating Christ s resurrection. During this time we will have the church decorated with plants and flowers. This is an excellent opportunity to remember deceased family members and friends. You may fill out this form, place it in an envelope marked Easter Memorial Flowers, and put it in the collection basket. Donations received by Sunday, March 25th will be published in the Easter bulletin. Your name: (please print clearly) In Memory of: (please print clearly)

3 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord As a child, I was greatly puzzled by this Sunday s Mass. It started out with the blessing of palms, processions into Jerusalem, songs of triumph and hosannas, and then, without warning or explanation, the mood of the Mass turned dark and foreboding, and I wondered, What happened? To be honest, it is still puzzling. Knowing the rubrics and the story of what is going to happen still doesn t keep me from being jolted and asking, What happened? This jolt is actually quite understandable. Jerusalem is a paradoxical center stage in all of Scripture. Jerusalem, the City of Yahweh, was also the city where Jesus was murdered. In Jewish tradition, the city of David and of Zion was not a place of blessing for the prophets of Israel; it was the place of their martyrdom. Jesus knew this when he went there, followed by enthusiastic crowds from Galilee: It is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem...the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! (Lk 13:33-34). In the Gospel of Mark, this is key to the whole proclamation: the suffering and death to be met in Jerusalem will reveal Christ s mission from God, who wills to redeem through his suffering. But while the crowds embraced the message, the learned and sophisticated cityfolk eager to maintain a profitable status quo did not. While the disciples, from Judas to Peter, fled, a Gentile in charge of the execution professed for the first time the faith of the Church: Truly this man was God s Son! Jerusalem is not limited to the geography and symbolism of Israel. Jerusalem is wherever prophets are rejected; it is wherever God s boundless compassion is rejected by rebellious people. What happened? The liturgy of Palm Sunday is meant to jolt us; it asks us whether we will believe that Jesus of Nazareth is Israel s Messiah and the Son of God, and whether the death of this man in the city of our God...in the city of the great King (Ps 48:1-2) means salvation for all who believe this to be good news. As we enter this week, are we prepared to embrace and proclaim the message of the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God (Rev 21:10) as foundational to our lives, no matter how jolting? Prayer Hans Christoffersen Generous God, who gave your Son to be born, to suffer, and to die in this world, we give you praise for this redeeming act of love. In our own suffering, strengthen us to unite our pain to the passion of Jesus for the sake of others. In the face of evil, grant us the courage to stand firm, choosing goodness, love, and forgiveness through the grace of Jesus' living and dying. In the hour of death, fill us with hope In the resurrec on and faith to believe that we will be united with you through our brother and savior. Amen. March 25, 2018 Page 3

5 What is The Triduum? A friend of mine told me that he was looking forward to celebrating the Triduum. I didn t know what that word meant. Can you explain it to me? The word triduum is a Latin word meaning three days. In the early part of the 1900 s, most major feasts of the Church were preceded by three days of prayer and pious exercises in preparation for the feast at hand. Today we use the word to refer to the paschal Triduum. These three days of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday celebrate Christianity s most sacred events the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The official beginning of the paschal Triduum takes place the evening of Holy Thursday when we celebrate the Mass of the Lord s Supper. This day is also referred to as Maundy Thursday, because Jesus gives a command (mandatum) to his followers to be an example of love and service to others. The Mass of the Lord s Supper ends in somber stillness as the tabernacle is emptied and the altar stripped bare. The priests, ministers, and congregation then exit in silence. Good Friday is a day of somber quiet as we relive the passion and death of Jesus. The service centers on the solemn veneration of the cross. Holy Saturday is characterized by the spirit of waiting and quiet anticipation, until the festive Easter Vigil, celebrated in the evening, when the Church comes alive with the new Light of Christ and catechumens are joyfully received into the eucharistic community. These are the Christian high holy days. Rev. Paul J. Coury, C.Ss.R. Weekly Mass Schedule Monday: April 2 to 7, 2018 Tuesday: 6:15 AM Mass 6:15 AM Mass 10:30 AM Oak Trace Wednesday: 8:00 AM Mass Thursday: Friday: 8:00 AM Mass 8:00 AM Mass Reflection This weekend we participate in the proclamation of the passion and death of Jesus according to the Gospel of Mark. In the extended version of this weekend s Gospel reading, Jesus is at Gethsemane, praying to his Father, in much emotional distress. He knows he can save himself. He can escape over the Mount of Olives in the dead of night and make his way safely into the Judean desert. Instead, Jesus chooses obedience to his Father and waits for his persecutors. As Saint Paul puts it in the second reading, Jesus is obedient to the point of death. Jesus obedience is a lesson for those who are good stewards of their life in Christ. Let us reflect on how we might be more obedient to the will of God instead of our own will. March 25, 2018 Page 5

Tom Strolia / cell-text / tom12336@comcast.net SMG Coordinator Launching Soon! Two New Initiatives to Improve Communications in our Church. We are excited to introduce two new initiatives at our Church that will benefit all of you. The first is a Faith Network Desk and monitor that will be located outside of our main worship space that will serve as a central communication hub for all activities in the Parish. It will be manned between all Masses by a knowledgeable staff member to help Parishioners and visitors with various functions within the Parish: new parishioner registration, scheduling Mass intentions, Parish event registration, Parish event information and a whole lot more. We are also looking to add two TV monitors into our worship space that will serve several functions. During Masses, the hymn numbers will be displayed on these units so that they can be seen throughout the Church. When needed, we will be able to show videos in Church (such as the annual CMAA video that we currently are not able to view in Church) as well as display other video or print media for special meetings and events in the Church (such as missions, School and RE programs, etc.) In order to complete both of these projects, we are looking for someone to help with sourcing the monitors, working with our IT specialist to research the requirements for this equipment, educating our staff on how to operate this equipment, and any other details tied to this project. If you would be willing to help us with these projects, please contact Terri O Dekirk at or at todekirk@stmarygostyn.org. March 25, 2018 Page 7

15 NEW PARISHIONERS: We are happy to welcome new members to our community, and encourage you to register either in person at the Rectory, or register online through our website, BAPTISMS: St. Mary of Gostyn offers baptismal preparation sessions on a monthly basis. If this is your first child or it has been more than five years since you attended a baptismal preparation session at St. Mary s or another parish, you will need to participate in a session before you can receive a date for your baby s baptism. Parents are the first and primary educators in the practice of the Faith. Godparents play an important role in the faith life of your child. While considering godparents for your child, be aware that at least one must be a baptized and confirmed Catholic who is active in his/her faith. Please call the parish office at to register for a preparation class and to schedule a baptismal date. BECOMING A CATHOLIC: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process of welcoming and preparing adults for the Sacraments of Initiation - Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation - for full membership in the Catholic Church. Unbaptized adults, adults baptized in another Christian faith, and baptized Catholics with little or no formal religious education are invited to participate. Please call the rectory for further information. ANNULMENTS: We are available to help anyone who is in need of information about how to apply for an annulment. Please contact the rectory at (630) LITURGY of HOURS: Morning Prayer (Lauds) is prayed Monday through Saturday following the morning liturgies. St. Mary of Gostyn Parish SACRAMENT of ANOINTING: The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is available at regularly scheduled liturgies throughout the year, or by appointment. You may ask the presiding priest before any Mass for an anointing. Communal Anointing Masses are held on the 1st Saturday of the month in August, December and April at the 8:00 AM Mass. The Eucharist will also be brought to those who are ill, upon request. Please notify the Rectory if members of your family are in the hospital or homebound. FUNERALS: Arrangements are usually made by the Funeral Home or by a family member. A member of our Bereavement team will meet with you to plan the Funeral Liturgy. Eulogies can be given at the Wake Service, Interment at the Cemetery or at the Funeral Luncheon, but not at the Mass of Christian Burial. MARRIAGES: Arrangements should be made at least six months in advance to provide ample time for preparation of this sacrament. PRAYER GROUPS: Monday evenings at 7:15 PM in the Parish Center; Tuesday evenings at 6:30 PM in the Parish Center chapel. ROSARY DEVOTION: Monday through Saturday, 7:30 AM in the church; Rosary will begin at 6:30 PM on Monday evenings in the church. RECONCILIATION: Confessions are heard Saturday, 3:30 to 4:30 PM in church. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is also available by appointment. Please call the Rectory ( ) to arrange to have your confession heard by a priest.
