3 Christmas 2018 Dear Parishioners and Guests, On behalf of the Staff of St. Mary of Gostyn Parish, I want to wish you and your family Merry Christmas, as we join with our Christian brothers and sisters in celebrating the Birth of Christ in our world. What a wonderful time of year it is as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! For centuries, lives have been changed one by one through the powerful grace and mercy He offers to those who accept what Jesus did on the cross over 2,000 years ago to save us from our sins. When Jesus first came on the scene in human form, He was fully God as well! We live in a world of tremendous challenge in living a Christian Life. Presently, some of our brothers and sisters around the World are going through unprecedented persecution. We pray for them, that they be free to worship, make a difference, and bring peace in the world. We continue to be reminded that Jesus Christ is going to come again and THIS time things will be far different than the first time in Bethlehem! No longer will He be a little child in swaddling clothes lying in a manger, but He will be our conquering King for all the world to see. Let s be ready and let s make sure Jesus is born today in our hearts! Weekday Mass Schedule Dec , 2018 Wed. Dec. 26: 8:00 AM Thur. Dec. 27: 8:00 AM Fri. Dec. 28: 8:00 AM Sat. Dec. 29: 8:00 AM Fr. As we draw close to the great Feast of the Na vity, we hear the bold stewardship proclama- on twice in today s second reading from the Le er to the Hebrews: Behold, I come to do your will, O God! Who is this Jesus? Who are we that we should follow him? Many want him as a friend, a guide, a king, an advocate. We long to see the face of God. Jesus reveals the nature of God, the servant sent to give us new life in Him. Take me to ponder: Do we have the courage to follow Jesus? To show others the face of God? To say to the Lord: Behold, I come to do your will? Page 4 Fourth Sunday of Advent

5 This scene takes place immediately after the angel Gabriel comes to Mary to ask her to be the mother of God, and she gave her famous Yes. As soon as the angel leaves Mary, we are told she set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country to visit her pregnant relative Elizabeth. Women who have been pregnant will recognize Mary s urge to run out and tell another woman that she is pregnant. The angel doesn t hang around and wait on Mary hand and foot. He departs, so Mary needs someone to share her excitement and fears, to commiserate with about morning sickness, and to understand just how exhausting it is to grow a baby while still working, preparing the meals, doing the laundry, and cleaning the house. Plus, there was so much mystery and wonder and unknown about Mary s pregnancy. Elizabeth had wanted a baby for so long and had almost given up hope when she became pregnant, but Mary certainly didn t imagine or plan on this pregnancy. Scripture tells us the two women, pregnant in such different circumstances, spent three months together before Mary returned to her hometown. They had much to talk and dream about, and learn about together. Thank goodness God gave them the gift of each other in that time! Questions of the Week If you, your partner, or a loved one has been pregnant, who played the part of Elizabeth for you, the friend you could run to in haste? When have you been an Elizabeth to someone else who needed to visit and talk? For whom might you be able to do that this coming week? Word of the Week Copyright 2018 Ann Naffziger. 7 Around the Parish CHRISTMAS MEMORIAL FLOWERS For those who would like to remember their deceased loved ones during the Christmas season, you can use the envelope provided in the bi-monthly mailing of envelopes or the envelopes provided at the entrances of the church and at the Faith Network Desk in the Prairie Street Narthex. You may also use a plain envelope, and write your name on the envelope and the name of the person you wish remembered. We will publish the list of memorials in the parish bulletin. PARKING DURING MASS Parking will be congested during some of our Christmas liturgies. We ask all parishioners to be careful not to block the driveways of our neighbors when parking your car to attend Mass. Please also do not park in the parking lot of the Calvary Church at the corner of Fairview and Wilson. We thank you for your cooperation in respecting our neighbors property. Also, we ask that you do not park in front of the white garages as well as the area in front of the Food Pantry near the Rectory side door. We need these areas open in case of emergency. Thank you for your cooperation. Activity Center News Can you believe that, weather permitting (and building permit process permitting), we are 14 weeks away from the start of our renovation project? The addition of our multi-purpose Activity Center and expansion of our gym is now a reality, not just the hopes of many generations of St. Mary s Parishioners and School Families. We thank those of you who have so generously pledged or given so far to the project. We will need to have $1,500,000 by April 1st to start the project. With many out of town guests who are St. Mary s alumni visiting over the Christmas season, please share this exciting news with them. For additional information about the project, refer to our website, the tab called Activity Center Information or contact Terri O Dekirk at: todekirk@stmarygostyn.org. 11 Youth Ministry Coming Soon! Alpha Youth Series... Merry Christmas from St. Mary of Gostyn Youth Group! Alpha Youth is a 9-week course that consists of FREE food, an opening game or icebreaker, a very engaging video about one of the aspects of our faith, and an open and honest discussion. Alpha Youth is a wonderful tool for providing a safe and welcoming space for teens to learn more about the basics of life, faith, and meaning, and to ask questions and talk honestly and freely about doubts or struggles they may be having. The best news? All of this is FREE - but please register or RSVP to Claire, so she can prepare enough food. For to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. - Luke 2:11 Meet Bl. Chiara Luce Badano: One of the Youth Group s Patron Saints Chiara was born in 1971, an only child to Ruggero and Teresa Badano in Sassello, Italy. Even at a young age, Chiara seemed to be aware of the needs of others and would sort through her toys to give some to poor children. She invited less-fortunate people into the family s home for holidays, visited the elderly, and even went to see other children who were sick and confined to bed. She loved the stories of the Gospel and loved to a end Mass. When she was 9, Chiara became involved with a Catholic Youth movement called Focolare. Chiara was very popular, had lots of friends, played tennis, swam, climbed mountains, and loved to sing and dance. Chiara loved her faith, and said that she tried to bring Jesus to her friends by her example and how she lived her life. When she was 17, Chiara learned she had a very serious form of bone cancer. Treatments were painful and unsuccessful and she became paralyzed. Yet Chiara s joy was explosive, and only increased with her suffering. A er one very pain-filled night she said, I suffered a lot, but my soul was singing. Chiara had a profound sense of redemp ve suffering and o en repeated the phrase, If this is what you want, Jesus, so do I, and like any teenage girl, she loved her hair, but with each lock that fell out she d pray, For you, Jesus. She frequently refused morphine, saying, I want to share as much as possible in His suffering on the cross. Despite her illness, Chiara inspired everyone who she encountered, wri ng le ers and messages of encouragement. She even gave all her savings to a friend who was becoming a missionary in Africa. When she was on her deathbed, she said, I have nothing le, but I s ll have my heart, and with that I can always love. Chiara died in 1990 and within nine years, her cause for canoniza on began. In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI declared her a Blessed. She was a normal, everyday girl, but Chiara s brief life showed us how we can all even as a high school student live a life of vibrant faith and love for Jesus, share God s love with those around us, and choose joy in the midst of suffering. Blessed Chiara Luce Badano, pray for us! December 23, 2018 Page 11

13 My First Christmas in Heaven I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below with tiny lights, like Heaven s stars, reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away the tear for I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear but the sounds of music can t compare with the Christmas choir up here. I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring, for it is beyond description, to hear the angels sing. I know how much you miss me; I see the pain inside your heart. But I am not so far away, we really aren t apart. So be happy for me, dear ones, you know I hold you dear. And be glad I m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I sent you each a special gift, from my heavenly home above. I sent you each a memory of my undying love. After all, love is a gift more precious than pure gold. It was always most important in the stories Jesus told. Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do. For I can t count the blessing or love He has for each of you. So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear. Remember, I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
