Epiphany, like Christmas, is celebrated in various ways by different nationalities and cultures. The customs and traditions surrounding these days give them a distinct feel and meaning. In many Slavic traditions, Epiphany is observed by marking the year on the lintle of the entrance to a room or house. In the center are the initials of the traditional names of the three wise men: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar with the year The purpose is to ask God's blessing on the home, marking it as though the wise men had come and found therein the Christ Child. God's blessing comes to each home as a source of protection and grace. In some places, Epiphany is celebrated much like a mini-christmas. Gifts are exchanged in memory of the gifts of the wise men and special meals are prepared. Not so. Estate plans and wills express our desire to provide for our loved ones and valued causes. Many of us don t think we have enough money, property or assets to make a will worthwhile. Yet the primary reason for having an estate plan or will has very little to do with amounts. This leads to the question: do you value St. Paul Church? Is this an institution you want to include in your estate plan or will? If so, all you need to do is instruct your attorney to add St. Paul Church in your will, trust or estate plan. Use the following language as a guide, though please have it reviewed by your attorney: I give St. Paul Catholic Church in Tell City, IN (specific amount, percentage of estate or specific property). If you are comfortable doing so, please let us know if you ve included St. Paul Church in your will, trust or estate plan for we want to acknowledge such gifts according to your desires. 5 Faith Formation Sun., January 7, :00 p.m. High School Classes Resume Mon., January 8, :00-7:15 p.m. SPRED group meet in Room 10 GOSPEL MEDITATION January 7, 2018 The Epiphany of the Lord "Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh." What a wonderful example the Magi give us in their visit to the infant Jesus. First of all, they demonstrate profound faith in God's word, spoken through the prophet Micah: "And you, Bethlehem... from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel" (cf. 5:2). Embarking on a long and difficult journey, they trust that they will find this newborn king of the Jews in Bethlehem as the prophecy announced. On their arrival at the home of the Holy Family, the Magi also give us an example of profound humility. These important men, to whom kings look for guidance and advice, do not hesitate to bow down, to "prostrate themselves" and give homage to a tiny babe. Putting their own position out of their minds, they reverently worship the infant Lord even as he sits on the lap of his mother. The generosity of these three "kings" is also evident as they open their treasure boxes and give to the poor child the richest of gifts. Traditionally, we understand the gold to symbolize the earthly kingship of Christ, the frankincense to represent his divinity, and the myrrh to stand as a symbol of the anointing he will receive upon his death. Finally, the wisdom of these men is evident in their decision to return to their country "by another way." Understanding the threat that King Herod posed to Jesus, they followed a plan that would help keep the divine child safe even though it meant inconvenience to themselves. Faith, humility, generosity, and wisdom. These gifts are the real legacy of the Three Kings. Today, let us ask God for the blessing of having these gifts in our lives. 6 News & Notes Our Deepest Sympathy Please remember in your prayers, the families of Virginia Ginny Nelson and Frank Kraus, who recently passed away. Quilt Socials 2018 Everyone should have now received their quilt tickets for the 2018 year. There is still plenty of time to get those to the office-drop in the collection basket, mail or drop them off at the Catholic Ministry Center. Our first social of the year will be Sunday, January 28, hosted and refreshment provided by St. Paul Parish Council. Coats for adults and children are currently available at the Catholic Charities office located at th Street in Tell City. Please call for more information on days and times of availability. Each person in the home can have one coat, one pair of gloves, one hat, and one scarf. Each household may have one blanket. Holiday Helpers United is a program of the United Way of Perry County. The winter coat giveaway program is administered by Catholic Charities.
