3 THANKSGIVING FOR GOD S SAVING MERCY AND LOVE (28 TH SOTY C). We recently celebrated the memorial of St. Francis of Assisi who had previously dreaded lepers but after his conversion, walked up to a leper, embraced and kissed him. He also heard the voice of Jesus from the cross of San Damiano saying: go and repair my house that is falling in ruins. He shared all his inheritance with the poor, embraced poverty and lived the life of the gospels and preached to all the love of God. God enabled him to cure a leper miraculously both in body and soul. St. Francis received report from the brethren indicating their resolve to abandon a certain defiant leper because it became impossible to attend to him. Hearing this complaint, he decided to visit this perverse leper and provide his care by himself. The saintly Francis said to him: may the peace of Christ be with you. In response, the leper retorted; what peace can I look for from God who has robbed me of peace, every other blessings and reduced me to a putrid and disgusting object?.the leper was adamant to the solemn admonishment of St. Francis to the effect that: the infirmities of the body are allotted by God in this world for the salvation of the soul in the next especially when they are endured patiently. St. Francis thereafter, he fervently prayed for God s special intervention on the leper, then, heated water with many odoriferous herbs and began to wash the leper and miraculously the leprosy disappeared and his flesh became completely healed. The leper moved with contrition and repented. He confessed all the sins he had committed against God and the brethren. Both his body and soul were washed and purified by God and realizing the saving mercy and love of God he gave thanks to God and remained a faithful disciple of Jesus ever after. R1. 2Kings 5:14-17, Naaman the Syrian army commander reluctantly obliged to wash himself seven times in the river Jordan as Elisha the prophet prescribed and his leprosy disappeared. He returned with his whole retinue to express his sincere thanks to the prophet Elisha with gratitude in his heart. He said: now l know that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel. Please accept a gift from your servant as a token of appreciation. Although Elisha declined from receiving the gifts he brought, it was a human quality of being thankful, readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. In the Gospel Luke 17:11-19, Jesus cured ten lepers who were in a desperate condition. They both humbly cried out for mercy; Jesus, master take pity on us. But once cured, the nine went back to their former lifestyle. They did not return back to thank, worship, praise and serve God except the foreign Samaritan who was despised by the Jews for ungodliness. We should not take God s gifts for granted as if they are our birth right. God s gifts to us are gratuitous. We do not merit the gift of life and the good things which God has provided for our sustenance in the world such as the air we breath, the water we drink, the sun shine, moon and stars that give us light day and night, the beauty of nature and creation, the land that produces houses to shelter us and the food we eat, and all the other natural resources we harness to our advantage. Above all these, the human relationships that God give us for our benefits are worth more than a million thanks. Do we show gratitude to parents and significant others who give birth to us, passed sleepless nights to care for us when sick, sacrificed their personal comfort to educate and raise us up to become what we are today especially when they reach old age and suffer weakness due to sickness and poor economic conditions? Do we care to visit them, make a phone call and make provision for their basic needs if they can no longer afford to do so themselves? Do parents appreciate the children's good efforts, help them to set goals and accomplish them and serve as models of faith, hope, charity and the other virtues? How grateful are we to God for creating us out of nothing but love, saving us out of nothing but love and forgiving us all our sins out of nothing but love, mercy and compassion? Like Naaman and the ten lepers, we too are washed clean in baptism and the other sacraments and constituted into a holy people of God through Christ. We must repay the Lord for His goodness to us by raising the cup of salvation and living a new life of fidelity to God by keeping his commandments of love, frequent confession and communion, fervent prayers, daily recitation of the holy rosary as it is customary with October devotion. The Eucharist is thanksgiving Whenever we gather together with the priest to celebrate mass, join the ranks of Naaman and the Samaritan leper with the whole church to express our profound gratitude, sincere thanks and appreciation to God for His saving love and mercy revealed in the death and resurrection of Christ which St. Paul rejoices even in his chains to proclaim. (continued in Column 2) (continued from Column 1) We join our sufferings, pains, anguish, sickness, joys and sorrows with the sacrifice of Christ on the cross for our well being and the salvation of the world. We see the Samaritan giving thanks to God after his cure because the love and mercy of God which we celebrate in the Eucharist has discarded a religion of merits which passes judgment that excludes, rejects and condemns people as unclean. God is a merciful father who love and save us out of nothing but unconditional love. Mt.
