3 A RELENTLESS QUEST FOR CHRIST S SAVING MERCY (20 th SOTY A). The desperate cry of the poor for mercy has always received a preferential treatment in the sight of God. During his public ministry, Jesus himself manifested an infinite mercy and compassion for the poor and the needy. He spent most of his time administering to their spiritual and temporal needs. Christ was available twenty four hours a day, seven days a week to render selfless service to those whom poverty and misery had reduced to a condition unworthy of human beings. Most of his miracles were done to save the poor from all kinds of infirmities and diseases both physically and spiritually, mentally and emotionally. After multiplying the five loaves of bread and two fishes to feed over five thousand people, the crowd wanted to make him a king against his wish. Hence, Jesus withdrew from them to escape such a dangerous popularity. In today s Gospel, Mt 15:21-28, Jesus went together with his disciples into the pagan territory of Tyre and Sidon, a secluded place that a Jew would not enter for fear of becoming ritually unclean. He wanted solitude to prepare himself and his apostles for his approaching death on the cross. Then a Canaanite woman; a Phoenician came with tears rolling down her cheeks in desperation begging Jesus to have pity and cure her daughter who was suffering from a bodily affliction believed to be a sign of demonic possession. Despite the fact that she was from a pagan territory known for long standing hatred and enmnity, wickedness and corruption of morals, the Canaanite woman portrayed an extra-ordinary faith in Jesus which could hardly be found among the Jewish religious leaders. Even though they were the chosen race; primary recipients of the commandments, covenants and promises of salvation, they refused to believe in Jesus as the messiah sent by God to save the world. In contrast with their rejection, the Phoenician lady s faith was so great that she willingly and happily accepted to be derided, scorned, looked down upon, and discriminated against on basis of tribal and racial sentiments. In her perseverance and struggles, she refused to accept a no as an answer to her quest. This Greek woman considered Jesus to be her last hope for the daughter s wellness since everything others ever tried ended in failure. To her request: Sir, son of David, take pity on me. My daughter is tormented by a devil Jesus initially gave her a negative response just to test her faith: it is not good to take the children s food and throw it to the dogs. The Greek woman accepted this Jewish insult of the gentiles cheerfully and went down on her knees pleading in all earnestness and persistency: Yes but even so, the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the children s table. Lord, help me. This derogatory statement did not discourage and put her down. She excellently passed the test. Hence, Jesus acknowledged the greatness of her faith before granting her heart desire. Jesus used the term house dog which Jews applied to gentiles while calling themselves children of God with compassion and affection. He was not arrogant and abusive but only used it to X-ray the bitterness, ill feelings and hatred that existed between the Jews and the gentiles before curing the wounds of division so as to bringing them together as one holy people of God. He used it purposely to diagnose the cause of the long standing bitterness and hatred that poisoned people s hearts in order to give us his spiritual remedy of love, compassion and mercy to cure this vicious circle of sin. By curing the daughter of the Canaanite woman, Jesus pulled down all the barriers that divided and separated people and established the one community of faith which is the universal catholic and apostolic church. He obliged the church to spread the Good news to the poor, make disciple of all nations and to baptize in the name of the trinity so that all the faithful will continue to share his saving love with every one they encounter in the world. He bestows upon us gifts of the Holy Spirit to help all who believe in him to bring his saving deeds to transform the world. They are also to perpetuate his work of redemption and reconciliation between God and man in the world. Hence forth, there should be no moor room for differences to exist among peoples based on tribe, race, nation, class distinctions, political affiliation and religious bigotry. All who believe in Jesus as their Lord and savior are united together into God s house as the new people of God to pray and do Him homage. R.1 Isaiah 56: , all this was foreshadowed by the prophecy of Isaiah, he foretold the Jews that God would include gentiles in His saving plan. He would also, pull down all barriers dividing people and unite all mankind into a new people in His house of prayer: my house will be called a house of prayer for all people. Therefore, as we are constituted into the new people of God through faith and baptismal grace, it is necessary that we do away with whatever will prevent the free flow of God s blessings, love, mercy and compassion in our lives. We have to enjoy His divine favors and allow them to flourish through us and enrich our brothers and sisters in the whole world. Prayer is one of the channels of graces through which we open up ourselves to be filled with God s bounteous blessings and favors. Sometimes in the beginning we are not properly disposed to receive what we ask God in prayer to give us. More to it, we may not esteem the grace highly if God bestows it upon us instantly. Hence, God often delay in answering us when we pray. The delay is for our own good. It enables us to make additional efforts to acquire the rightful disposition that will make our weak faith grow stronger to maturity and effect an inward transformation of our minds. It helps us to depend on God totally and to surrender ourselves in humble obedience to His divine will. When it seems God is not answering our prayers as we desired, let us not be discouraged, dismayed and be tempted to give up. Rather, we should be consistently persistent following the example of perseverance and the faith commitment of the Canaanite woman. The woman brought to Christ a gallant and audacious love, a faith which grew until it worshipped at the feet of the divine, an indomitable persistence springing from an unconquerable hope, a cheerfulness which would not be dismayed, that is the approach which cannot help finding an answer to its prayers.
