From an 1854 cartoon by Gustave Doré Sincethecollapseofcommunismin1991,observershavebeenstruckbythe similaritiesbetweencontemporaryrussiaandthesocietythatexistedbefore the Revolutions of With Russian literature and first hand accounts as our guides, we shall explore pre revolutionary Russian history from the emergenceoftheromanovdynastyin1613untilthefirstrevolutiontoshake the tsarist state in En route we shall encounter the lives not only of tsars like Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, and the last Romanov, NicholasII,butofpeasants,workers,andrevolutionaries.Whydidautocracy emerge as the form of rule in Russia?
