Thissolutionhasbeenonlypartiallysuccessful.Debatesaboutmatterssuchastheinfluenceof religiousorganizationsinpolitics,teachingintelligentdesigninpublicschools,andpublic supportforfaithbasedsocialservicesdemonstratehowdifficultitistokeepreligionoutofthe publicsphere.inthepastdecadereligionhascomeunderrenewedattackbythe new atheists whoarguethatreligionisnotonlymisguided,itisharmful. Thegoalofthiscourseistoexplorethenatureofreligiousbeliefandtherolethatitshouldplay inpubliclife,includinglifeintheclassroom.wewillexplorethefollowingsortsofquestions: Whatisthenatureofreligiousfaith?Isitavirtueoravice?Whatdoesitmeantohavea secular society?howcanwetalkconstructivelyaboutreligion?when,ifever,isit appropriatetoinvokereligiousbeliefintheclassroom? COURSEOBJECTIVES 1. Todevelopafullerunderstandinghowpersonalreligiousbeliefsimpinge,implicitlyor explicitlyonawiderangeofpublicissues. 2. Todevelopanawarenessofthediverseviewsregardinghowreligionshouldenterinto publiclife. 3. TocreateaspacewithintheRCAHinwhichstudentsandfacultycandiscussthe importantroleofreligioninourculture. 4. Whatisthemostimportantpointmadeinthereading(s),andwhyisitimportant? b. What,inyourmind,isthemostimportantquestionnotanswered(perhapsnoteven raised)inthereading(s),andwhyisitimportant? Studentsareexpectedtoprepareandsubmittheirreadingreflectionpaperselectronically inangelbythewednesdaypriortoclassat11pm.therewillbenomakeuppapers.if youareunabletoattendclass,youshouldsubmitthepaperinadvance.paperswillbe assignedfor11ofthe15classperiods.however,onlythe10bestscoreswillbeincludedin yourgrade. 2. Exams:Therewillbetwoessayexamsamidtermandafinal.Bothexamswillcover materialfoundinthereadingsanddiscussedinclass.seethecoursescheduleforexam dates.asetofpossibleexamquestionswillbedistributedinadvance.onthedayofthe exam,studentswillbeaskedtowriteonasubsetofthesequestions.makeupexamswill beallowedonlyifarrangedwiththeinstructorpriortotheexamdate. 3. Attendance:Regularattendanceisrequired.Whilenopointswillbeaddedforregular attendance,pointswillbedeductedfromthestudent'sfinalgradeforrepeatedabsences.
