All new members are welcome to register at the Rectory Office. Those interested in the Catholic Faith should call the Rectory Office. Below is information about our Parish. Rectory Office Hours: 9 am to 4 pm, Weekdays Sacrament of Baptism: Please contact the Rectory Office to make arrangements. A Pre-Baptism Class for the parents is required. Sacrament of Matrimony: Please contact the parish priests at least six months in advance. An initial meeting with a parish priest is required before a wedding date is agreed upon. Participation in a marriage preparation program is required. Ministry to the sick and homebound: Homebound members of the parish should contact the Rectory Office to make arrangements to receive Holy Communion at home. Those who are in the hospital should inform the Rectory Office. Sponsor forms for Godparents: Only qualified registered members will be issued Sponsor Eligibility Certificates. The sponsor should contact the Rectory Office at least one week in advance. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM All children in grades 1 through 12 are required to participate in a Religious Education Program. We currently have an Elementary School from Pre-School through 8th grade and a CCD Program from K through 8th grade. Our Youth Group Program provides religious education for grades 9 through 12. 2 Page Two Our Lady of Fatima The term Good Samaritan has become common in our culture. It is used to designate someone who acts to help another person in distress, even though they are not a professional responder or known to the person they aid. In many places Good Samaritan laws have been passed to protect those who come to the aid of the distressed from lawsuits. In Jesus culture the most important aspect of His parable was not, as it is to us, that the man who aides the victim is good, but rather that he was a Samaritan. The Samaritans were a people living in the Holy Land at the time of Jesus, their territory located between the regions of Judea in the south and Galilee in the north. The inhabitants of Samaria were of a mixed descent, Israelite and pagan, remnants of the people left behind at the time of the exile of the Northern Kingdom. The exiles who returned from the Babylonian Captivity refused their help in rebuilding the Jerusalem Temple and treated them as outcasts. The Samaritans responded with hostility and built their own temple in Samaria. The two sides feuded on in to the time of Jesus. When Jesus uses a Samaritan as a figure in His parable He is making a point about rising above our prejudices to see all people as our neighbor. Whomever we encounter in distress, that person is our neighbor and we are obligated to help them in whatever way we can. The corporal and spiritual works of mercy are not just meant for our own; we have an obligation to all of humanity. The faith is not just meant for our crowd it is meant for everybody. Jesus parable gives a ringing answer to the question that prompted Him to tell the story: who is my neighbor? My neighbor is anyone I meet. Your support and help is welcomed for our flea market this weekend and next. Monday, I will begin the administration of St. Titus Parish as well as Our Lady of Fatima. We also welcome Fr. Tom Wilson, who will be serving both parishes as parochial vicar. Fr. Wilson will be residing at St. Titus rectory. Please keep us in your prayers...fr. Howard. Join Christian Mothers: New member applications are being accepted for installation during the October Mass. All women over the age of 18 are welcome and encouraged to join Christian Mothers. St. Augustine OLOF Flea Market: Our Lady of Fatima Flea Market is open from 1pm to 5pm Sunday, July 10th and Saturday, July 16th from 8am to 2pm; Sunday, July 17th from 1 to 5pm. Stop by and find that special treasure. Book Club News: We meet next on Thursday, July 14th, to discuss The #1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexandra McCall Smith. Please return the book if you borrowed one! Also join us to choose another book. Mat Workshop: The Mat Workshop has provided 12 sleeping mats for the homeless and 10 military members for distribution this month. Mats are made by plastic grocery bags. It takes 500 bags to make a sleeping mat. Helping those less fortunate and saving our landfills is a rewarding project. If you can use a pair of scissors we could always use the help. This is something that can be done at home. Instead of throwing those grocery bags in a drawer, come and learn how to fold, cut and tie to make balls of plarn. We could also use crocheters too. Get the kids involved! The mat workshop meets on the last Monday of each month at 10 am. On Mission for the Church Alive!: We are living in a time of change, but what will this change look like? On Mission for the Church Alive!, our diocesan-wide planning initiative, includes 21 criteria for creating draft models for the new kinds of ministry in our parishes, health care facilities, prisons and jails. To learn more you are invited to attend one of this week s Summer Sessions, 7-8:30 pm; Monday, July 11th at St. Alphonsus Parish in McDonald; Tuesday, July 12th, at St. Joseph the Worker in New Castle with Bishop David Zubik; Wednesday, July 13th at St. Joseph in Cabot; or Thursday, July 14th at Holy Martyrs in Tarentum. A free will offering will be taken after the concert to support the ministry. Family Perspective: Children learn by watching us. Do they see you helping others like the Good Samaritan, or do they see you avoiding others like the Levite in today s gospel. Worry more about what your children see in your life than what they see on TV. For more information call or visit Celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel: The Confraternity of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel will celebrate the annual feast day of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on Wednesday, July 13th at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 115 Trinity Dr., Center Twp. The Mass will be celebrated at 7 pm by Fr. Michael Greb, OFM Capuchin -Franciscan Friar. Father resides at St. Fidelis Friary in Beaver, Pa and is presently the Chaplain at McGuire Memorial Home in New Brighton. All are invited to join the Confraternity and receive the Brown Scapular at this service. A rosary procession (weather permitting) will follow immediately after the liturgy. Refreshments and cookies will be served in O Connell Hall following the rosary. Everyone is welcome to attend. For information, contact Bill DiCioccio, Treasures from our Tradition: The first presbyters were advisers to the bishops rather than what we would call priests, yet by the year 1000 our present-day understanding of the ordained priesthood is clearly in place. The Germanic influence was strong in those days, reflected in a series of questions posed to the candidate about his intentions. The priest s role in the celebration of Mass had by then come to the fore, as the ritual notes that Mass vestments must be worn, the hands of the priest must be anointed with chrism, and a chalice with wine and water and a paten with a host must be given. Up to then, the ordination rite had stressed the presbyter as a collaborator with the bishop and a member of the order of presbyters. Then, in a not-so-subtle shift, the presbyter came to be seen as a priest designated to celebrate the Mass and, as the prayer suggests, to touch the chalice. By these days, remember, the cup had long vanished from Communion for the laity. A thousand years ago, today s patterns were already in place. The priest no longer saw himself as a member of a council of elders, a presbytery, and in some dioceses he had little influence over the bishop. Instead, he was either a pastor, with relationship to the eucharistic community in the parish, or he was a priest monk, offering Mass for the salvation of the departed or the intentions of the living.
