The final day for Our Lady of Fatima Flea Market is Sunday, July 17th from 1-5pm. Stop by for your final chance to purchase that treasure. Special Discounts The Rule of St. Benedict is a series of instructions given by St. Benedict to those who wished to follow the monastic life. It is a guideline for how to live in a community, pursuing the call to holiness. The rule strikes a balance between action and reflection, hospitality and contemplation, between work and prayer. The stranger is to be welcomed as if he or she were Christ; the practice of hospitality. Prayer and listening to God are the foundation of a holy life. These two values-work and prayer are to be kept in balance. Our readings for today remind us that we too must strike a balance between work and prayer in our lives; we may not be monks, but we are also called to seek holiness as our true vocation. Abraham and Sarah entertain the visitors and unknowingly entertain angels (Hebrews 13:2). Hospitality, welcoming and caring for strangers, was something expected of people in the ancient Middle East. In a time when there were no formal hotels or public places of assistance, travelers relied on the kindness of strangers. To refuse welcome or care to someone was a great evil. Hospitality became an art form; people busied themselves about with all the tasks of feeding and welcoming a visitor. In our reading from St. Luke s gospel, Martha is busy with the work of hospitality; that s why she is upset with her sister, because she is not joining her in the work. But Jesus points out to Martha that Mary s chosen part is the better way to welcome Him; sitting at his feet and listening. We need to work, but we also need to pray. We need to be a friendly community and welcome people into our midst, but we are welcoming them to encounter God through worship. We need to care for others, but we need to see how they are truly cared for by seeking wisdom from the source of all life, God. We need to meet and greet our neighbors, but we also need silence to hear God speak to the depths of our souls. Balance is the key to true growth in holiness, both as individuals and as a community. We cannot be a social service agency or a social club, nor can we be a collection of solitaries. We come together to worship God, encountering Him in Word and Sacrament, we then serve Him in our neighbor. Work and pray is not only a good motto for Benedictine monks, it is a good motto for all of us. To help us strike that balance between welcome and reflection, we will be introducing a new practice before Sunday Masses in the fall. You will be invited to greet those around you and then share any prayer intentions you may each have. We will explain this more as we prepare for this step, but it fits with the call to be welcoming and prayerful. It is also important that when we come to Mass we are respectful of the needs of others as well as the purposes of the church building itself. Greet your neighbors, by all means, but also allow for quiet in the church as that others may pray in preparation for Mass. We all need to take that time to prepare for the encounter with God that the liturgy is and to recognize the presence of the Lord with us in the church, particularly in the Blessed Sacrament. Let us be a community of hospitality and welcome, particularly to the visitor, but also

But the possibilities and opportunities are endless! Learn how to get involved at one of this week s summer sessions, 7-8:30 pm: Monday, July 18th at St Joseph Parish in O Hara Twp; Tuesday, July 19th at St. Monica in Beaver Falls/ Chippewa Twp.; Thursday, July 21st at St. Margaret Mary in Moon Twp. or July 21st at St. Paul Cathedral in Oakland with Bishop David Zubik.
