3 Page 3 Seventh Sunday of Easter (Mother s Day) May 8, 2016 Today we begin the seventh and last week of the Easter season. Throughout these weeks since Easter Sunday we have contemplated different facets of the new life of the Resurrection. Time is one of the greatest gifts that God gives to us. Each year we celebrate time in various ways. There is the seasonal calendar from January through December. For some the Fiscal year from July 1 to June 30 is the focus. For many the academic year from September until June is the way things are measured, with those precious months of July and August for respite. We have months, weeks, days, hours as other ways we measure time. In the liturgical year which begins on the First Sunday of Advent we celebrate the Sacred mysteries of our faith. We place a priority on celebrating each event each year. The celebration of the liturgical year is grounded in the Old Testament, especially in Exodus 12:14. This day shall be a memorial feast for you, which all your generations shall celebrate with pilgrimage to the Lord as a perpetual institution. The Israelites were to celebrate this meal every year as a perpetual reminder of the Passover. God himself told them that. At subsequent Passovers the Israelites rid their households of all leaven that is, fermented dough kept from one baking to another a form of yeast- and all leavened bread. Starting afresh with new dough symbolized a new life of freedom. Jewish families today do this during the Passover season and serve only unleavened bread, called matzo. From this custom is how we as Catholics use unleavened bread for celebration of Eucharist. The number forty is also important for us. We have the forty days of Lent each year to prepare to celebrate the Paschal mysteries. We just celebrated the forty days following the Lord s Resurrection, in which we celebrate the Lord in his risen body. At the Ascension Jesus passed totally into the presence of God. He was not going to leave us totally alone. We prepare now during this ten-day period to celebrate the beginning of the Church, Pentecost, sometimes referred to as the birthday of the Church. Here as you can see from the prefix, the number fifty is prominent. Pentecost is 50 days after the Resurrection. This has its roots in the Jewish feast of Weeks, which in addition to being an agricultural festival of offering the first fruits, celebrated the Fifty days from leaving Egypt (Passover) to the receiving of the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. Time then is important for us. Just like God told the Israelites that they should celebrate the Passover each year, as a perpetual institution, so we celebrate our Banquet feast in the Eucharist. We celebrate God s love for us each time we come to the altar. We rejoice in his presence in His Word and in his Sacrament. Jesus abiding presence offers not only challenge but comfort. Let us continue to use the gift of time that God has given us as we lift up our hearts and voices in thanksgiving and praise. The lyrics from the Hymn We Remember are a good source of prayer: Father Casey We remember how you loved us to your death, and still we celebrate, for you are with us here; And we believe that we will see you when you come, in your glory, Lord, we remember, we celebrate, we believe. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is asking for your support for our annual MANNA Canned Food Collection. Manna Bags will be available at the Church doors at all of our Masses today. Canned food items in greatest need are: beef stew, tuna fish, fruit, vegetables, pasta, soups and pork and beans. Kindly return your filled Manna Bag to the back of Church near the supplemental resource section on Saturday, May 14th or Sunday, May 15 th. The collected bags will be distributed to Holy Cross Food Pantry in Mt. Airy and Mother of Mercy House in North Philadelphia, considered one of the poorest zip codes in America. If there are any teens and parents who would like to help deliver these bags on the afternoon of the 15th, please contact Father Ar mand at We will meet in the Church lot near the side doors at 2:00pm. This is a wonderful service/immersion opportunity to show our love for those less fortunate than ourselves. Thank you for your generosity!

6 Page 6 Seventh Sunday of Easter (Mother s Day) May 8, 2016 SPONSOR GUIDELINES FOR BAPTISM/CONFIRMATION Church law requires that Baptism and Confirmation sponsors themselves frequent the sacraments regularly. When someone who does not meet that requirement is designated as a sponsor, it is always an unpleasant (and frequently painful) experience for the priest, the parents of the child, and most especially for the person designated. The reason a sponsor must be a practicing Catholic is that a sponsor is expected to pay special attention to the efforts of the person who is being baptized or confirmed to live a Christian life in keeping with the teachings of the Catholic Church. In the case of Baptism, sponsors are also expected to assist the parents of the child in their Christian duty as parents, by offering them support through good example, encouragement and prayer. A sponsor should be a registered parishioner of IHM for at least 6 months. The person should also have received all the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation. The Sponsor must be at least 16 years of age. The Sponsor should also participate at Mass each Sunday. If married, the sponsor must also be in a valid Sacramental marriage. By issuing a Sponsor Certificate, a priest assures members of the faithful that a person is a Catholic in good standing who is eligible to serve as a sponsor for Baptism and/or Confirmation. Please contact the Rectory during regular business hours to inquire about Sponsor Certificates. For parish news and events that may not fit in the bulletin go to our website and for school news visit iheartmary.org IHM SPIRITUAL RESOURCE CENTER & FREE LIBRARY The Center provides our parish with spiritual books, CD s, pamphlets and booklets, many of which were created by top Catholic authors, and speakers. We can use these resources to increase our knowledge of the FAITH. It s called Faith Formation and we are all expected to pursue it and develop it during our earthly pilgrimage. These resources are free. Any donation will be used to bring similar resources to other parishes. The Center is located just off the Main Lobby in the room formerly used for baptisms. In that same room you will find the IHM Free Lending Library. Generous parishioner have donated well over 300 books covering a wide range of Faith related topics, many by well known authors. We need to know our Faith before we can share it. IHM Evangelization Ministry NEXT BAPTIMAL DATES May 15th June 5th & 19th PARISH STAFF Rochelle A.
