3 Page 3 Pentecost Sunday May 15, 2016 Today marks the end of the Easter Season of the Year of Our Lord 2016 as we celebrate the great Solemnity of Pentecost, the fiftieth day of the Easter Season. Our readings today show us that the Holy Spirit comes to us in different ways. Whether in a driving wind, tongues of fire or the breath of Christ, the Holy Spirit comes and bestows on us many gifts. The mission of the Church is to unite believers as one in Christ so that all creation might be returned to God as a perfect offering. The perfecting of this offering is the work of the Holy Spirit and the reason why we celebrate Pentecost as the climax of the Easter story. The Lord s Death and Resurrection stirs up the faith of the disciples, but the sending of the Spirit is the unifying and strengthening force that keeps us firmly rooted in the Lord. The descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples in Acts 2 is the founding moment of the church. Throughout Luke s gospel, the Holy Spirit has been a leading character. The Holy Spirit comes upon Mary (Lk 1:35); fills Elizabeth (Lk 1:41); directs Simeon (Lk 2:25); decends on Jesus (Lk 3:22) and leads him into the desert ((Lk 4:1) and teaches the disciples (Lk 3:22) In Acts the coming of the Holy Spirit signals that the mission of Jesus begun in the Gospel will now continue in the words and deeds of the apostles and disciples. The Holy Spirit will embolden Peter (Acts 4:8); select deacons (Acts 6:3) ; strengthens Stephen (Acts 7:55); fills Saul who will become Paul (Acts 9:17); inspires the growth of the local churches (Acts 9:31) and inaugurates and confirms the mission to the Gentiles (Acts 10:44). In the second reading Sunday from Corinthians, St. Paul tells us there are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit. Different forms of service but the same Lord To each individual the manifestation of the spirit is given for some benefit. The body is one though it has many parts. The challenge with the help of the Spirit is to build up our diverse communities into the one Body of Christ. Jesus tells us in Matthew s gospel that a good tree bears good fruit. The tradition of the Church identifies 12 gifts of the Holy Spirit. We can use these as a guide to see how we are progressing in our life in the Spirit. The 12 Fruits of the Holy Spirit are: Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Generosity, Gentleness, Faithfulness, Modesty, Self-Control and Chastity. On the Solemnity of Pentecost, it is good to reflect on the role of the Spirit in our lives. Let us take the time to listen to the urgings of the Spirit and to pray in gratitude for all that God has done for us and will yet do. Come Holy Spirit, be our helper and guide. Father Casey A Very Special Announcement About a Very Special Parishioner We are very happy to announce that having been called to the Sacred Order of Deacon, our parishioner Mr. Keith Beaver was ordained through the Imposition of Hands and the Invocation of the Holy Spirit as conferred by His Excellency Archbishop Charles Chaput, Archbishop of Philadelphia on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at St. Charles Seminary in the Chapel of Saint Martin of Tours. 6 Page 6 Pentecost Sunday May 15, 2016 SPONSOR GUIDELINES FOR BAPTISM/CONFIRMATION Church law requires that Baptism and Confirmation sponsors themselves frequent the sacraments regularly. When someone who does not meet that requirement is designated as a sponsor, it is always an unpleasant (and frequently painful) experience for the priest, the parents of the child, and most especially for the person designated. The reason a sponsor must be a practicing Catholic is that a sponsor is expected to pay special attention to the efforts of the person who is being baptized or confirmed to live a Christian life in keeping with the teachings of the Catholic Church. In the case of Baptism, sponsors are also expected to assist the parents of the child in their Christian duty as parents, by offering them support through good example, encouragement and prayer. A sponsor should be a registered parishioner of IHM for at least 6 months. The person should also have received all the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation. The Sponsor must be at least 16 years of age. The Sponsor should also participate at Mass each Sunday. If married, the sponsor must also be in a valid Sacramental marriage. By issuing a Sponsor Certificate, a priest assures members of the faithful that a person is a Catholic in good standing who is eligible to serve as a sponsor for Baptism and/or Confirmation. Please contact the Rectory during regular business hours to inquire about Sponsor Certificates. For parish news and events that may not fit in the bulletin go to our website and for school news visit iheartmary.org IHM SPIRITUAL RESOURCE CENTER & FREE LIBRARY The Center provides our parish with spiritual books, CD s, pamphlets and booklets, many of which were created by top Catholic authors, and speakers. We can use these resources to increase our knowledge of the FAITH. It s called Faith Formation and we are all expected to pursue it and develop it during our earthly pilgrimage. These resources are free. Any donation will be used to bring similar resources to other parishes. The Center is located just off the Main Lobby in the room formerly used for baptisms. In that same room you will find the IHM Free Lending Library. Generous parishioner have donated well over 300 books covering a wide range of Faith related topics, many by well known authors. We need to know our Faith before we can share it. IHM Evangelization Ministry NEXT BAPTIMAL DATES June 5th & 19th July 3rd & 17th PARISH STAFF Rochelle A.
