1 April 7, 2013 Divine Mercy Sunday Join Us for Mass: Mon-Fri 10 am Tues -Fri 7 am Sat 8 am & 5 pm Sunday 9 & 11 am website: parishcenter@saintmark-mn.org Dayton Avenue Saint Paul, MN A Strong Family United in Christ Fr. Humberto Palomino, P.E.S. Pastor of the Church of St. Mark On the Second Sunday of Easter, the Church celebrates the Feast of Divine Mercy. Preparation for this Feast starts on Good Friday with the Novena to the Divine Mercy. This devotion is an authentic movement inside the Catholic Church, started by St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, a visionary nun from Poland whom John Paul II canonized April the 30th of Blessed John Paul II chose Sister Faustina s canonization day to announce to the whole world that the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name of Divine Mercy Sunday. [It shall be] a continued invitation to the Christian world to turn with confidence toward the Divine Goodness during all the trials and difficulties of the years to come." In one of the many visions St. Faustina had of Our Lord, He told her: " My daughter, if I demand through you that people revere My mercy, you should be the first to distinguish yourself by this confidence in My mercy. I demand from you deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. You must not shrink from this or try to excuse or absolve yourself from it" " I am giving you three ways of exercising mercy toward your neighbor: the first-by deed, the second-by word, the third-by prayer. In these three degrees is contained the fullness of mercy, and it is an unquestionable proof of love for Me. By this means a soul glorifies and pays reverence to My mercy. Yes, the first Sunday after Easter is the Feast of Mercy, but there must also be acts of mercy, and I demand the worship of My mercy through the solemn celebration of the Feast and through the veneration of the image which is painted. By means of this image I shall grant many graces to souls. It is to be a reminder of the demands of My mercy, because even the strongest faith is of no avail without works. O my Jesus, You yourself must help me in everything, because You see how very little I am, and so I depend solely on Your goodness, O God". -- (Diary of St. Faustina, #742) Upcoming Events The Feast of Divine Mercy TODAY: Coffee & Donuts hosted by the Bergsons in Carolyn Hall Apr 7 Festival Meeting 7-9pm at the Parish Center Apr 8 The Bible Study 7-9pm in Carolyn Hall Apr 9 Saint Mark s Acoustic Café 6:30-9:30pm in Carolyn Hall Apr 12 Coffee & Donuts hosted by Lost Souls Softball in Carolyn Hall Apr 14 Parent Volleyball 4:30-6:30pm - in the School Gym Apr 14 Emmaus 7-8:30pm Apr 19 Coming Soon: CCW Rummage Sale Week of April 22 Save the Date: Grand Olde St. Mark s Day Festival May17,18 A Strong Family Story Divine mercy. When Jesus' side was pierced, a great flood poured out. An ocean of mercy, a sea of graces. This best describes my journey, covered by an ocean of mercy. It has waited for me at every turn and every unknown path. It is no wonder then, that it has enveloped my family as well. Today marks not only Divine Mercy Sunday but also it is the one year anniversary of my wife, Joy, entering the Catholic Church. She chose Saint Faustina, a saint who gave us the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Today marks the baptism of our second child at the 9 AM Mass as well. Divine mercy has also been Saint Mark's for us. A welcoming community that has helped us grow in ways we could have never imagined. With this in mind, we would like to invite each of you to celebrate Adelaide's baptism, as a strong family united in Christ, with a party for Adelaide after the 11 AM Mass. We have been members of Saint Mark's for three years. We have been very blessed in helping out with many ministries and events like singing with the 5 PM Mass ensemble, the festival choir, Saint Mark's Community Theatre, Cana Couples, starting Saint Mark's Acoustic Cafe and Family First Fridays. Family First Fridays is a great event that we were blessed to be -- Strong Family continued on page 2

2 Page 2 April 7, 2013 Strong Family Story continued from page 1 in the beginning stages of. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, hear great topics and attend a night Mass dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We meet on the first Friday of every month beginning with a dinner at 5:30 PM in Carolyn Hall and ending with Mass at 7 PM. Please join us. Have you ever attended Saint Mark's Acoustic Cafe? This event started as a conversation about talents between God and I during Adoration. It has been very successful. When the Catholic Church was younger, she was known as the pinnacle for the arts, music, literature and thought. It seems that as she has grown older, we have lost some of that. The Acoustic Cafe has become a launching pad to ignite us to begin again to be a pinnacle of thought, art, music and literature. We may not be the best musicians but we are here to inspire. Join us at our next event on Friday, April 12th from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM in Carolyn Hall, all ages are welcome. Lastly, I have been in the process of designing a new project for our Archdiocese. In the spirit of art and literature as mentioned above, I hope to set up a program to ask Catholics from our Archdiocese to write poetry on particular Catholic themes. These will then be collected into a book and distributed around the U.S. (or beyond). If you are interested in helping, please contact me. Saint Mark's, you have inspired me to live out my faith and I thank you. This is our church. This is how divine mercy inspires me, how does it inspire you? - Benjamin Brekke, parishioner Please keep the Principal Search Committee in your prayers as they continue the task of finding a leader to take St. Mark s Catholic School into the next one hundred years. Today s Readings: #838 Acts 5:12-16; Rv 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19; Jn 20:19-31 Psalm #118: This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice, let us rejoice, let us rejoice and be glad Next Sunday: Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41; Ps 30; Rv 5:11-14; Jn 21:1-19 or 21:1-14; Mass Intentions for the Week Tues 7:00am + Bruce Degerstedt 10:00am + Betty Sobtcak Wed 10:00am + Peter Lotzer Thurs 10:00am + Donald Klaers Fri 10:00am + Arnold Lamers Sat 8:00am + Alice Kern Faith Formation & Youth Group St. Mark's Service Project at Feed My Starving Children: On the very last morning of Lent, 34 volunteers from St. Mark's packed food for hungry children in Nicaragua at the Feed My Starving Children site in Eagan. We packed enough food for 65 children to eat for an entire year! This event was one of three St. Mark's Service Corps service projects this year, although we opened this event up to the entire parish. Our motto is from Mother Teresa: "To Jesus, With Jesus, For Jesus." Watch for more Service Corps opportunities next year! Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration The Lord in the Most Holy Sacrament is waiting for you in the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. There, in the quiet, open your heart, open your heart and let Him speak to you. Let's take Him up on his invitation to come to Him with our worries and burdens, to allow Him to carry them with us. His wisdom will bring meaning to the stirrings of your heart. Stop any time, but consider committing for an hour a week as well. Any questions or suggestions call Terry Groppoli at Community News Ploughshare Farm Update: Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a locally based food distribution system that creates a direct link between farmers and consumers. Individuals prepurchase a "share" of the farm's harvest in the spring when expenses are highest for the farmer. In exchange, CSA members receive a weekly box of freshly picked organic produce as it becomes available throughout the growing season. This mutually beneficial partnership helps ensure a more secure market for small farms struggling to compete with larger, less sustainable farms, as well as ensures members consistent access to healthier, safer, and tastier food. Ploughshare Farm delivers produce right here to the St. Mark's Carolyn Hall kitchen during the growing season. A certified organic farm located 18 miles north of Alexandria, Ploughshare Farms offers a wide variety of organic vegetables and some fruits which are grown on 160 acres of fertile soil bordering the Chippewa River in Central Minnesota. The produce is locally grown, certified organic, fresh and full of flavor! Ploughshare Farm is now taking orders for the 2013 season at Call Carolyn, St. Mark's drop site coordinator, at or Carolyn.E@USFamily.net with questions. Speaker at UST: George Weigel, distinguished Senior Fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, will give a public lecture at the University of St. Thomas, titled: Evangelical Catholicism: Deep Reform in the 21st Century, Monday, April 15, 2013, 7:30 p.m., on the third floor of the Anderson Student Center in Woulfe Alumni Hall. Mr. Weigel will be signing copies of his new book, Evangelical Catholicism: Deep Reform in the 21st Century afterwards.
