1 May 6, 2012 Join Us for Mass: Mon-Fri 10 am Tues. & Thurs. 5:15pm Sat 8 am & 5 pm Sunday 9:00 & 11 am website: parishcenter@saintmark-mn.org Dayton Ave - Saint Paul, MN A Strong Family United in Christ Fr. Humberto Palomino, P.E.S. Pastor of the Church of St. Mark Our Lord makes a distinction between the branches that bear fruit and the branches that don t bear fruit. We can say that what doesn t bear fruit is under the dominance of death. It doesn t matter how beautiful the blossom if that beauty will not last and bring us peace and closeness to Our Risen Lord and God. Our Lord Jesus Christ also makes a very clear distinction between the branches which bear much fruit because through them circulates his blood of life and the branches that do not bear fruit because they lack life in Christ. It is a very sad verdict: There are people that lack this interior principal to animate their lives. They are governed from the exterior. Their unorganized impulses are manipulated by others. The amazing good news of Waster is based on the truth that Jesus comes to save us from a life without life. He is now our life. Let s go a little deeper into this, to bear fruit according to today s reading: Let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. St. Catherine of Siena said once that words without works and concrete actions are like the leaves of the trees; they will not satisfy the farmer. The farmer wants to see fruits, works, actions. Lord, thank you for granting me the opportunity to be with you. There are things in life, Lord, that attract me, but you attract me more. I hope in you, and I love you. Maybe I don t really understand what it means to love, and maybe I don t love the way I should, but I do love you. Lord, help me to grow in my interior life, so I can remain united to you Lord, it is easy to trust what I can see, feel and touch. It is wiser, infinitely wiser to trust you, even if you are hidden from me for now. That work continues and we are happy to announce the imminent arrival of a baby girl to one of our Karen families! We are hoping to help them with baby supplies and also with a possible move. They are in a duplex on Central and Victoria just north of 94. The maintenance is rather poor, and more importantly, they would like to move closer to other Karen families. Please keep them in your prayers. Their English is improving greatly. Two of the women and one of the Fathers have found jobs. It is a real challenge to assimilate, but they are lovely people who want nothing more than to live in peace and raise their beautiful children to be part of this community. If you have any ideas of where to look for apartments and/or would like to help our committee with a move if and when they find a new place, please let us know. Respond by calling or ing the Parish Center, attention St. Mark's Peace and Justice committee. Thank you very much for your continued prayers. We will keep you posted about the arrival of the little one, and possibly post some photos on the St. Mark's web page as our strong family united in Christ continues to grow. Please join us May 7th, at 7pm in the community room for potluck dinner. We ll be making plans for project home this summer.

To assure the Blessed Sacrament is never left unattended the goal is to have two people scheduled as Adorers for each hour. We still have hours that are in need of an Adorer or two. For more information and to sign up, please call Anne Duffy at Did you know we have a Children's Holy Hour each Friday from 2-3pm? Parents with young children can spend time with Jesus without the worry of distracting other adorers. Mass activity bags are available, as well as books (you can bring coloring materials as well). You can stay 5 minutes or the entire hour. Its also a great time for parents and their children to stop in after school. Each moment you spend before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament brings blessings upon you. "So now, children, listen to me; instruction and wisdom do not reject! Happy is the man who obeys me, and happy those who keep my ways. Happy the man watching daily at my gates, waiting at my doorposts; For he who finds me finds life, and wins favor from the Lord." For more information, please contact Sharon Albertson at School News State Cakes Day: For the past 15 years the Saint Mark s fourth graders have concluded their year-long study of the United States with a very interesting and delicious project. Along with completing individual state reports, each fourth grader and their family bakes a cake in the shape of a particular state. The cakes are decorated with features unique to each state and carefully brought to school on State Cakes Day. Our wonderful parent volunteers then assemble all of the cakes into one huge United States cake to be enjoyed by the staff and students throughout the day. I liked that we could put all of our creativity into the cakes. You get to learn a lot about a state you didn t know about. We even got to be in the newspaper! -- Emmett Bell, Saint Mark s Fifth Grader I thought it was fun. We got to create a state out of a cake and decorate with what learned in your report. It takes time, but it s worth it! -- Roderick MacDonald, Saint Mark s Fifth Grader

The church has itself been set apart from the world of human work, and the altar is elevated above the rest of the church in a spot as remote and separate as the sanctuary of the soul. The solid base it is set on is like the human will that knows that God has instituted us for his worship and is determined to perform that worship faithfully. The table of the altar that rests upon this base stands open and accessible for the presentation of sacrifice. It is not in a dark recess where the actions may be dimly glimpsed, but uncurtained, unscreened, a level surface in plain sight, placed, as the heart's altar should be placed, open in the sight of God without proviso or reservation. The visible altar at the heart of the church is but the external representation of the altar at the center of the human breast, which is God's temple, of which the church with its walls and arches is but the expression and figure. -- By Romano Guardini, one of the most important figures in Catholic intellectual life in 20th-century and precursor of the Second Vatican Council
