1 The Breath Priest Lake Presbyterian Church Vol. 14, No. 6 Take the Breath to Spread the Word June 2014 Dear Friends, I remember the feeling of getting on a subway in New York stuffed with humanity from all over the world and somehow feeling alone. Every person seemed to be living in their own solitary bubble. Ears shut in with headphones. Eyes focused on a phone or a book. Mouths only open for the occasional muffled cough. Bodies presented as fortresses of solitude not to be disturbed. And then something happened to the city that would change everything: 9/11. I remember the first day I went back to work a few days after the horror of that day. I stepped on the elevator of my high-rise apartment building and there was a young woman who I knew to be the fiancé of a young man who had worked on the 88 th Floor of one of the towers. His entire company was lost. The last time I had seen her was at their engagement party two weeks earlier. I barely recognized her. She was incapable of recognizing me. I didn t say a word. I stayed in my bubble and left her to hers. As we walked out on to E 96 th St, something was different. No honking horns- just the whir of vehicles and gentle squealing of brakes on buses. We stepped together onto the se subway train. It was dead quiet. People seemed aware that in each of the bubbles of existence present there may be incredible pain. The silence was respect. Over the next few days, the silence began to be replaced with soft conversations between strangers. They all revolved around the shared experience of the day. Where were you? Did you lose anyone? What did you see or hear? And one by one, bubbles began to pop. Lives were pouring out and mingling with other lives. One word I heard a lot was bless. God bless. God bless this nation. God bless this city. God bless your fily. Suddenly this secular city had become a place of blessing. People were encountering each other on trains, buses, in bars, and even some at churches. In fact, church attendance skyrocketed for a period. Some found God, but many found each other. And this is something. I believe that God can be found when we deeply encounter each other. I believe that God blesses us in and through these encounters. And even more azingly, I believe God creates fily out of such encounters. We gain brothers, sisters, fathers, daughters, and spouses. I never spoke to that young woman. I will never know the depth of pain she experienced that day. Perhaps there was nothing that I could have said, but I wish I had reached beyond my bubble and blessed her in some way so that she might know that she was not alone in this world. Reach out and bless someone today. May God bless you today! Pastor Paul 1

6 Daily Scripture and Prayer I hope everyone is enjoying the weekday daily inspiration! Several weeks ago GOD spoke to me and told me not to complain unless I was willing to do something about it. So I, and I m asking you to join me in making this a better world with a small effort. In just four weeks the distribution list has grown significantly. I know it has now spread into Canada and the Philippines. We all have a network of fily and friends. If you will forward this on to them, and suggest they do the se, think where this could be six months from now, a year from now!!! If we work together in spreading a simple SCRIPTURE and PRAYER we will have a ministry of impact. Most all big things in this world started out small, but if we adopt a vision and think BIG, GOD will do the rest. PLEASE JOIN IN. PEACE - Worship Committee News PLPC fily, please don t forget June 15th. This will be a special day in the life of our church. We will celebrate the Church of the week with 94.1 the FISH. The radio station will provide daily spots beginning on Monday June 9th and will then be in attendance on June 15th at our worship service. Please remember to invest, invite and include. Invite your fily, friends, neighbors and co-workers! Let s fill our pews and glorify GOD! CHURCH OF THE WEEK! Some of you are aware that right here in Nashville there is a faith-based radio station called 94.1 FM The FISH. The FISH has a progr called Church of the Week. Well, guess what? PLPC has been selected to be the Church of the Week during the week of June 9th. What this means for PLPC is some great free advertisement. Also, Pastor Paul will be going to the FISH s studio to record an interview that will be played on the radio station through the week of June 9th! PRAISE GOD! Part two of this blessing is that a representative from 94.1 FM The FISH will be at our church on Sunday, June 15th to celebrate with us. You may be wondering What can I do to be sure this is a special celebration in the life of PLPC? Glad you asked. Our goal is to fill every pew, plus some, for this special day. Mark your calendar now to reserve this date, then invest, invite and include every neighbor, friend, co-worker you can. Our target is to have a minimum of 250 in attendance that day! The next thing you can do is PRAY daily for this great opportunity that our branch of CHRIST has been given. Thank You JESUS! See you there. 6

7 So what does a Deacon do??? Our Board of Deacons is made up of 6 members. They are elected by the congregation and serve a 2 year term. The main responsibility of a Deacon is to minister to those in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to anyone in distress both within and beyond the community of faith. Each Deacon has a "flock" of members and friends that they "shepherd", but also caring for all of our church fily. Your Deacon is available to you regardless of the reason...prayer concerns, illness and hospitalization, questions or just an understanding ear. Hello Everyone! Please mark your calendars for the annual Ms. Martha s Ice Cre Crankin which will take place Sunday June 8th this year. If you would like to participate by making ice cre and/or spling the flavors, please get with Jordan Greene or another member of the missions te to purchase tickets and obtain instructions for making your ice cre entries. We ve enjoyed some great homemade PLPC entries the past two years and would love to have more this year!!! We had 12 different flavors created by our PLPC congregation and our very own Lisa Witten took home 3rd place last year!!! Let s see if we can outdo ourselves this year! ***We will be kicking off the event Sunday June 1st with Ice Cre after church. You can also purchase your tickets at that time if you would like to.*** When: 3-5 p.m. Sunday, June 8th RAIN OR SHINE. Where: on the lawn at First Presbyterian Church, Franklin Road, Nashville. 8 PTL Segment Praise the LORD! I want to thank each of you who have been praying with me for employment! Oh, has GOD ever come through! I was in Myrtle Beach with friends for a week playing golf when an ce through inviting me to interview for a sales position with Wilson County Motors. I called and scheduled the interview. May 20th when my flight landed at 4:10 my daughter picked me up, we raced home so I could change and get to Wilson County Auto for a 5:30 appointment. Upon completion of my interview, the recruiter explained he had filled the training class spots. He went on to say I m going to add you anyway. I went through three days of training and the rest is history! Wilson County Auto has been in business for 85 years and is owned by a fine Christian fily. Part of one s success in automobile sales is developing your own client list. So I ask you gracefully if you or someone you know is in the market for a vehicle, please remember me. I would ask for an opportunity to work with you or them. There is no doubt that this is a GOD thing, PTL and GOD bless you all for your PRAYERS! Peace of CHRIST! Dave Smith This is the confidence we have in approaching GOD: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us- whatever we ask we know that we have what we asked of him. 1 John 5: 14, 15 Ladies Lunch Bunch After having a great time at Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theater last month, the ladies have decided to go back this month to a place we really enjoyed last year, The Chocolate Covered Strawberry in Gallatin. The setting was delightful and the food was excellent so it is worth a return visit. We will be going on our regular Thursday, June 19th, so put that on your calendar. Because it is quite a way to the restaurant, we should meet at the church at 10:00 A.M. to carpool. For those who want to meet us at the restaurant, we have a reservation for 11:00 A.M. We are always happy to have friends join us - the more the merrier. Be sure to tell Gloria Kimbro at gkimbro@comcast.net or or Shirley Hansel at s.g.hansel@comcast.net or See you then. 8

9 MEN OF PLPC Dear MOC, it is with regret that I inform you, that I will no longer be able to lead this group. GOD has blessed me with a new career that will require I work on Saturdays. This will take effect on June 8th. For the short term Dave Nock will step into the MOC role. The MOC will need to meet in June and work the election stuff. It has been my privilege to do this over the last three or four years. I believe this is a good part of men s ministry at PLPC and should continue. Please prayerfully consider this. Blessings! Dave Smith 12 PACK SUNDAYS for Journey to Kenya The Kenya te is in need a few 12 packs of Diet Coke, Sprite, Coke and Dr. Pepper.
