Today is indeed a day for wonder, for gasping in astonishment at Jesus resurrection. For all of human history, death had been final. In the Acts of the Apostles, though, Peter testifies that Jesus, who was publicly executed, was raised to life by God. John s Gospel admits that the disciples did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead. Even Jesus closest friends were not expecting this innovation: life after death. Easter eggs have a very ancient pedigree: nature s perfect package, emblem of new life, dyed and decorated and given as gifts in ancient Egypt, Rome, China, and Persia. Just as the long hard winter is over, the egg bursts with promise of life and nourishment. Long ago, Christians came to see the egg not as a symbol of spring s rebirth, but of ours, and as a sign of Christ s tomb. Legends have their origin in tales told around a hearth, but they often contain a profound truth. The idea of Mary, the first Christian, engaged in a merciful act of forgiveness and tenderness even in the shadow of the cross, describes the age old wish that Christ Easter in us. On Friday evening, May 3rd, Adolpho Afato will be coming to St. Ferdinand to share with us memories and stories of his time with Saint Padre Pio (also known as Saint Pio of Pietrelcina). Adolpho met Padre Pio when he was 16 years old and they maintained a lifelong friendship. Adolpho is now 80 years old and has been invited to come to St. Louis to speak at several parishes. Bishop Herman has asked St. Ferdinand to be one of the parishes to host this event. The talk is free of charge and is open to anyone and everyone. Adolpho will have books for sale afterward for $10 in the gathering area and will be available to answer questions.

Baptisms are at 11:30 a.m. on the 3 rd Sunday and during the 10:00 a.m. Mass on the 4 th Sunday of the month. Marriage Arrangements must be made at least 12 months in advance of the desired date.
