1 ANNUNCIATION PARISH Buildings and Grounds Committee The next meeting of our Annunciation Parish Buildings & Grounds Committee is this Tuesday, May 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Conference Room. Interested in Becoming Catholic? If you or someone you know has no church home, or is attending Annunciation but is not Catholic, consider extending an invitation to this individual to give some thought to becoming Catholic. If you or someone you know is interested in finding out more about the possibility of becoming Catholic, please contact Father Grogan or Dr. Sandi Chakeres at the Parish Office, Next Sunday: First Sunday of the Month Is the monthly collection for the St. Vincent de Paul Society, as well as the monthly drop-off of dried and canned food donations for the St. George Food Pantry. Please be as generous as possible. This week, we are taking up The Catholic Relief Services Collection to respond to Jesus in disguise. This collection helps six Catholic agencies to provide relief and support to struggling communities and to work toward peace and reconciliation among our marginalized brothers and sisters here and around the world. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the collection. Learn more at CLIFTON, CINCINNATI, OHIO Your Prayers Are Requested Please remember to keep in your prayers those of our Parish Community who are unable to be with us at our Sunday Eucharist: Freddie Domineack, Bertie Domineack Harper, Patterson Harper, Joseph Chaky, Jim San Filippo, Mary Thomas, Cheryl Walz, Vince Frasher, David Koenig, Raul Florez, Anna Heuck, Lucy Richardson, Henrietta Bernard, Pam Martini, Theresia Mesgetz, Molly Minihan, Tom Vonderahe, and Patricia & Harvey Sander. If you know of someone else who should be included in this list, please call the Rectory. Also, your prayers are requested for the safety, and safe return, of all the men and women serving our country in the armed forces. Annunciation School Faith Formation News Our weekly celebration of Morning Prayer with students and faculty, preschool-8th grade, is Thursday, May 4th at 9:30 a.m. in church. During the Easter Season, we will also be celebrating the Easter Procession during Morning Prayer. Each class, grades 1-8, has made an Easter Season Banner for the celebration. All are welcome to join us for prayer! May 1 is the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker. Saint Joseph is one of the patron saints of our second grade class at Annunciation Catholic School. For more information about Faith Formation at Annunciation School, please contact our Director of Faith Formation, Dr. Sandi Chakeres at Pray for Persecuted Christians! The murder of at least 44 Coptic Christians by ISIS terrorists as they worshiped on Palm Sunday is a grim and tragic reminder that a new age of persecution and martyrdom of Christians is upon us. The need for prayer in this darkness is urgent. For an end to senseless violence, murder and destruction; for our Coptic brothers and sisters in Christ whose lives have been shattered by recent bombings in their churches in Egypt; for their families, for the Pope of the Coptic Church, Tawardros, and for all Christians who suffer martyrdom because of their faith. We pray to the Lord. Our Lady of Perpetual help, pray for us! Vocation View Recognize Jesus in the breaking of bread. Your heart is burning within you. Think about the possibility of walking the path with Jesus as a brother, sister, priest, or deacon. (Luke 24:13-35) To Help You Prepare For Next Sunday: Acts 2:14a, 36-41; 1 Peter 2:20b-25; John 10:1-10

2 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 30, 2017 The Light of Christ Eastertime is the 50-day-long season from Easter Sunday until Pentecost, June 4 this year. Throughout this time the paschal candle shines in church. This candle is an image of the risen body of Christ. It was kindled and consecrated with great ceremony on Easter Eve. When people are baptized into the church, they are given candles lit from the paschal candle. They are told to keep their lamps burning brightly throughout their lives. At funerals the paschal candle shines on the dead, like a pillar of fire to guide them to the promised land. A burning candle is a sign of self-sacrifice. It consumes itself in a blaze of glory. Traditionally, the church s candles are made from beeswax. A beehive is a symbol of the church, where everyone is called to work together for the common good. Many households light a fine, fat candle every mealtime, and indeed, every time they gather to pray. It is a holy habit. When you light a candle in prayer you might say, Jesus Christ is the light of the world, a light no darkness can extinguish. Or say the words proclaimed at the Easter Vigil, Light of Christ! Thanks be to God! Copyright 2001 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications, 1800 North Hermitage Avenue, Chicago IL ; ; Text by Peter Mazar. All rights reserved. Used with permission. 3 ANNUNCIATION PARISH CLIFTON, CINCINNATI, OHIO Bread In the old days, before yeast was readily available at markets, many households kept some alive in a crock stored somewhere warm in the kitchen. The yeast was tended by adding flour and water as needed. A bit of it leavened each batch of bread dough. Eventually bacteria would get into leaven, which made it stink to high heaven. What s worse, contaminated leaven failed to make bread rise. So it got thrown out and some was borrowed from a neighbor to start fresh. At Passover, the Jewish people make a communal ritual of this new beginning by tossing out the old leaven and by eating unleavened bread until new yeast develops. For Christians, the action of fresh yeast is an emblem of resurrection and a sign of the lifegiving Spirit. Saint Paul told the Corinthians to throw out the old yeast so that the new - the gospel - could raise them up. With your companions (a word that means those we break bread with ), celebrate this season with Easter breads, perhaps with a babka, brioche, lambropsomo (Greek shining bread ), hot cross buns or colomba di Pasqua (Italian Easter dove ). These can be savory symbols of the bread of life, the risen Christ, who is made known to us in the breaking of the bread.
