3 Psalm 50 (taken from the Douay Rheims) Know the Mass 3. Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my iniquity. 4. Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 5. For I know my iniquity, and my sin is always before me. 6. To thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before thee: that thou mayst be justified in thy words and mayst overcome when thou art judged. 7. For behold I was conceived in iniquities; and in sins did my mother conceive me. 8. For behold thou hast loved truth: the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made manifest to me. 9. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. 10. To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness: and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice. 11. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 12. Create a clean heart in me, O God: and renew a right spirit within my bowels. 13. Cast me not away from thy face; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 14. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and strengthen me with a perfect spirit. 15. I will teach the unjust thy ways: and the wicked shall be converted to thee. 16. Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall extol thy justice. 17. O Lord, thou wilt open my lips: and my mouth shall declare thy praise. 18. For if thou had desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted. 19. A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. 20. Deal favorably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up. 21. Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: then shall they lay calves upon thy altar. While this Psalm is not included in the Sunday Masses of Lent; it is recited daily by the clergy in the Divine Office at Lauds in the morning. The Asperges which is sung before Sunday High Mass is taken from Psalm 50 as well. It was written by King David in the midst of his repentance for his adultery with Bethsabee, which led David to plan the death of Uriah, Bethsabee s husband. The psalm is a commentary on David s true contrition for his sin and on the assurance of the prophet Nathan s assurance that God had forgiven him. It contains all the elements of contrition, gives voice to a language of sorrow and amendment from a truly repentant soul. Grave sin is ever perilous and deadly. Save by a special grace from God, a person is ever afterwards worse for having tasted its false delights. But with God s grace the unhappy experience can become a constant reminder of one s own weakness; a warning against the danger that lurks in occasions of sin, even for those who think themselves strong in virtue; a source of knowledge for the instruction and guidance of others; and a reason for ever extolling the mercies of God 3

4 Summary of Last Sunday s Sermon Our Lord took His closest Apostles with Him up the mount and His body was transfigured before their eyes. They also saw Moses and Elias conversing with Him and heard the Father s voice saying this is My beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased. The Apostles were then struck with fear and fell to their faces. In the Old Testament, Moses went up Mt Sion for 40 days to converse with God, and the Israelites at the base of the mountain could not hear God s voice but could see His power and were very afraid at what they saw. Elias however, after he fasted for 40 days, went up a mountain and could not see God but he heard His voice. He did not heard it in great earthquakes, fires or winds, but in a breeze. In a whisper as it were. The communication between the two characters in the Old Testament are seen again in the New. The Father spoke and instilled great fear on the Apostles. But He said This is My beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him. God the Son spoke with gentleness saying do not be afraid. God wants us to have a filial fear of Him and not a servile one. He wants us to have a filial love for Him since we are His children. Filial love is more perfect, more pure. It is less carnal and more disinterested in oneself. We all ought to have this purer relationship with each other but especially those who prefer the married life over the religious. Since we live in a culture that encourages the satisfaction of all carnal desires, the Church reminds us with St Paul s words keep away from all uncleanness. If a man and a woman are preparing themselves for marriage, they must practice chastity which is a pure expression of their love for each other. By self-discipline they are essentially saying in their actions I love you for who you are and not what you are. I can control myself now with you whom I love, so that you may know that I can be trusted with those whom I do not know in the future Chastity, the pure relationship between each other, can signify the soul s relationship with her Creator since our relationship with Him is spiritual, not carnal. Since our baptismal vows we are united to Him as a bride Announcements 4 and groom and so when we sin, we commit spiritual adultery because we have preferred to unite our souls with creatures and not with our Creator. 6 Confession Here are some How to s for the Sacrament of Penance (i.e., confession). 1. The Penitent enters the confessional and kneels down at the screen. 2. The Penitent, making the sign of the cross, says, Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (state amount of time) since my last confession. These are my sins. 3. The Penitent confesses his sins. The Confessor listens, but he may ask questions if something the Penitent has said is unclear or in order to lead the Penitent to a more thorough examination of conscience. (NB. All mortal sins each kind and the number of times committed must be confessed. All venial sins should be confessed.) 4. When the Penitent inishes confessing, he signi ies this by saying: I am sorry for these and all the sins of my past life (or similar words). The Confessor may offer some advice or counsel, so that the Penitent may take the necessary steps to amend his life. 5. The Confessor then gives a penance (usually a prayer or a good work) and then instructs the Penitent to make an Act of Contrition. There are different formulas. An act of Contrition is usually printed in the confessional. 6. After the Penitent has made an Act of Contrition, the Confessor imparts absolution with the sacramental formula. The Penitent makes the Sign of the Cross at the absolution. 7. The Confessor concludes with these or similar words: Your sins are forgiven. Go in peace. The Penitent leaves the confessional and ful ills the penance as soon as possible. The Act of Contrition O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. And I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell but, most of all, because they offend Thee, my God Who are all good and deserving of all my love. And I irmly resolve with the help of Thy grace to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen. 6

7 Marian Hymn All weekend Masses at North American Martyrs Parish will conclude with the seasonal hymn to the Blessed Virgin Mary that, through her intercession, God will bless North American Martyrs Parish with a church. Daily Prayer for the Pope V. Let us pray for Francis our Pope R. May the Lord preserve him, and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth, and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies. Our Father. Hail Mary. Let us pray. O God, Shepherd and Ruler of all Thy faithful people, look mercifully upon Thy servant Francis, whom Thou hast chosen as shepherd to preside over Thy Church: grant him, we beseech Thee, that, by his word and example, he may edify those over whom he has charge, so that together with the flock committed to him, he may attain everlasting life. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen. 7
