3 Offertory continued: Offering the Wine taken from The Sacrifice of the Mass by Nicholas Gihr Know the Mass Having offered the host, the priest takes the chalice, still covered with the purificator, to the Epistle side of the altar where the acolytes wait with cruets of wine and water. There, he wipes out the inside of the chalice with the purificator, ensuring that the chalice is completely clean before it receives the wine. This small act of reverence looks forward to the consecration, when the wine will become the Blood of Christ. The priest is responsible for keeping the Sacred Species protected, so even now he removes any impurities from the chalice lest something unbecoming remains in the chalice and comes into contact with the Precious Blood. The priest takes the wine from the acolyte and pours a fitting amount into the chalice. He then blesses the water and pours three drops into chalice, thus mingling the water into the wine. As he does so he prays, O God, Who, in creating human nature hast wonderfully dignified it, and still more wonderfully reformed it; grant that by the mystery of this water and wine, we may be made partakers of His divine nature Who vouchsafed to become partaker of our human nature, even Jesus Christ Thy Son, our Lord; Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end. Amen. It is worth noting that the priest only makes the sign of the cross over the water and not the wine. The reason for this is found the symbolism of mingling the wine and water. The wine represents Christ, Who has no need of a blessing and gains no advantage from being united with His people. The wine therefore does not receive a blessing. The water however, representing the faithful, is blessed to show the immense dignity and spiritual heights that we are raised to by Christ s union with us. As its three drops are poured into the chalice they become absorbed by the wine, symbolizing what occurs when man partakes of Divine Nature. The prayer (above) is a petition that what occurs in the mingling of water and wine will take place spiritually the souls of the faithful through sanctifying grace. Other mysteries are symbolized by this mingling of wine and water: 1) the Son of God uniting Himself to man by taking on human nature; 2) the issue of blood and water which burst forth from the pierced side of Christ on the cross, just as the Eve was taken from the side of Adam, so the Church is taken from the side of Christ; 3) the union of the faithful with Christ at the moment the Eucharist is received, the Divine life of the head diffuses itself through all the members as a vine to its branches. Returning to the center of the altar, the priest raises the chalice before him and raises his eyes to heaven. Thus offering the wine he prays, We offer unto Thee, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseech ing Thy clemency that it may ascend before Thy divine Majesty as a sweet odor, for our salva tion and that of the whole world. Amen. He identifies it as the chalice of salvation even though the wine has not yet been consecrated. Now that it is offered, it is part of the oblation and is destined to become the Precious Blood. As he lowers the chalice, he traces the sign of the cross with it over the corporal where it will be set. He did this also with the Host, symbolizing that the altar is a figure of the cross where the Body and Blood of Our Lord hung in the bloody sacrifice now represented on the altar. 3

4 Announcements Last Sunday s Sermon Summary The birth of our Lord is near the shortest day of the year. The natural sight of darkness signifies spiritual darkness or evil. We see so much sin in the world and it is Christ Who comes to teach what is true and good for all of us. Those who are of good will and love God look forward to His coming to banish the evil we despise. Hence the church has assigned the name of this Sunday as Guadete! Rejoice! For the Lord is near to deliver the just from the unjust. Feast Day this Week: St. John December 27th St John The Apostle, before Christ called him, was a fisherman by trade but after being called by Christ Himself, our beloved saint fished for men. Inspired by the Holy Ghost, St John wrote one of the four Gospels in the New Testament along with 3 Epistles. St Jerome wrote that St John was pressed by the brethren to write his Gospel, he said he would if they would do a common fast and put all their prayers up to God. While they fasted and prayed, he prepared himself for the divine undertaking by solitude, prayer and contemplation. He then wrote the most sublime of the Gospels, reaching heights the soul cannot reach without divine help. And so, he is often seen with an eagle to signify the loftiness of the Gospel. He referred himself as the one whom Jesus loved, which he said, not out of pride nor to distinguish himself from the others, but out of gratitude and tender love for his blessed Savior. When persecutions arose, he was put into boiling oil but was miraculously unharmed. He then was banished to the island Patmos. Some church fathers say the incident was to fulfill our Lord s words that the Sons of Thunder would indeed drink the cup of His passion (Mt 20;22) Referring to this kind of martyrdom, the chalice became another symbol connected with the Holy Apostle. This could be one of several reasons why there is a special blessing for wine on his feast day. As St John was approaching death he would frequently say to his disciples my children love one another. They got weary of hearing the same words and one asked why he repeated himself. St John responded, because it is the precept of the Lord, and if you comply with it, you do enough. His heart was filled with the love of God which can be found in his life and writings. He that does not love, 4 knows not God, for God is charity (1John 4;8) Let us love God, for He first Loved us. He that does not love his brother whom he sees, how can he love God Whom he does not see? (1 John 4;19) Let us ask the one Whom Jesus loved to pray that our charity be never extinguished by selfish motivations. Altar Server Initiation and Promotion The annual ceremony of Altar Server initiation and promotion will take place after the 11:45 Mass on December 23rd. All altar servers meet in the front of the church immediately after Mass Epiphany Gold for Chartres Pilgrimage [Gold Drive Fundraiser] Please bring your gold scraps broken necklaces, old class rings, mismatched earrings, or even your old gold tooth to our ʺEpiphany Goldʺ collection sites after all Masses until the end of Epiphany. Or drop your donation in an envelope labeled ʺEpiphany Goldʺ in the collection basket The precious metal generously donated will be melted and ALL proceeds will benefit the North American Martyrs Chartres Pilgrimage to defer the cost of the tour bus Chartres Look out for baked goods from our pilgrims traveling to Chartres after Mass. In addition to the individual pilgrims raising money, we are also collecting donations to offset and even cover the cost of renting a bus for our parish Adoration Spend some time in Eucharist Adoration this Advent. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in simple exposition before Monday and Wednesday night Masses. As a parish we pray: 1) In thanksgiving for blessings and graces received and North American Martyrs; 2) In petition for aid in overcoming faults and healing of wounds which hinder access to Christ; 3) In petition for a church for North American Martyrs. Daily Prayer for the Pope V. Let us pray for Francis our Pope R. May the Lord preserve him, and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth, and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies. Our Father. Hail Mary. Let us pray. O God, Shepherd and Ruler of all Thy faithful people, look mercifully upon Thy servant Francis, whom Thou hast chosen as shepherd to preside over Thy Church: grant him, we beseech Thee, that, by his word and example, he may edify those over whom he has charge, so that together with the flock committed to him, he may attain everlasting life. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen. 7
