3 Blessing of the Ashes Know the Mass As the celebrant enters the Church, the choir sings: Hear me, O Lord, for thy mercy is kind; look upon me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies, O Lord. Save me, O God: for the waters are come in even unto my soul. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Hear me, O Lord... The celebrant begins the blessing of the ashes: Almighty, everlasting God, spare those who are repentant, be merciful to those who pray to You, and graciously send Your holy angel from heaven to bless and hallow these ashes, that they may be a wholesome remedy for all who humbly implore Your holy Name; who accuse themselves by acknowledging their sins, who weep for their evil deeds in the sight of Your divine mercy; who humbly and earnestly seek Your fatherly love. Grant to us who call upon Your holy Name, that all who are sprinkled with these ashes for the forgiveness of their sins, may receive health for their bodies and salvation for their souls. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. O God, You Who desire not the death but the repentance of sinners, look graciously upon the weakness of our human nature, and in Your fatherly love mercifully bless these ashes which are to be placed upon our heads as a sign of humility and a pledge of Your forgiveness. We know that we are but ashes, and because of our wickedness must return to dust. May we obtain from Your mercy the pardon of all our sins and the rewards promised to those who repent. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. O God, You Who are moved by our acts of humility and appeased by our works of penance, turn Your ear lovingly to our prayers, and by the ashes sprinkled upon the heads of Your servants mercifully pour forth upon them the grace of Your blessing, fill them with the spirit of repentance and truly grant what they ask for in the right way; and may whatever You grant remain fixed and unchanged always. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty, everlasting God, Who bestowed upon the people of Niniveh, who repented in sackcloth and ashes, Your merciful remedies, graciously grant that we may so imitate their outward behavior as inwardly to obtain Your forgiveness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. The celebrant incenses and blesses the ashes with holy water, quietly reciting the Asperges. As he begins to sign the faithful with ashes, the choir sings: Let us change our garment for ashes and sackcloth: let us fast and lament before the Lord: for our God is plenteous in mercy to forgive sins. Between the porch and the altar the priests the Lordʹs ministers shall weep, and shall say: Spare, O Lord, spare thy people: and shut not the mouths of them that sing to thee, O Lord? Let us amend for the better in those things in which we have sinned through ignorance: lest suddenly overtaken by the day of death, we seek space for penance, and are not able to find it. Hear O Lord, and have mercy: for we have sinned against thee. Help us, O God, our Savior: and for the glory of thy name, O Lord, deliver us: and forgive us our sins for thy nameʹs sake: O Lord deliver us. Listen, O Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Listen, O Lord... As the celebrant signs each person with ashes he says: Remember, man, that you are dust and into dust you shall return. Before returning to the altar, the celebrant washes his hands. He then prays the final prayer before Mass begins: Grant us, O Lord, to take up our duty as soldiers of Christ by holy fasting that we, who are going to struggle with the evil spirits, may be protected by the help of selfrestraint. Through Christ our Lord. 3

4 Announcements Last Sunday s Sermon Summary Suffering may be one of the most common causes for people to cease following Christ. Suffering comes in many ways; physical sufferings, like those listed by St. Paul in his 2nd letter to the Corinthians take a toll on one s body. Suffering with one s own fallen human nature, endeavoring to overcome a fault or rid oneself of the thorn in the flesh is a particular kind of interior suffering. Enduring the animosity and opposition of those around us, particularly those whom we love, as St. Paul loved the Corinthians, can leave us frustrated and bitter. Christ often takes the blame for suffering, for not mitigating, relieving it, or removing it altogether. Christ may seem at fault for setting a high standard which no one, without His help, can achieve. However, it is Christ Who suffers for those who walk away from Him. He adds whatever blame is laid at His feet to the load He carries on His back. There is no suffering so great that He cannot and will not allow us share with Him. His love inclined Him to willing embrace the suffering of all of mankind due to sin when we often go to suffering unwillingly. The strength Christ offers is supernatural and can be found in the Holy Eucharist, in confession, and in the daily conversation with Him in prayer. Feast Day This Week: St. John of God March 8 Nothing in Johnʹs early life foreshadowed his future sanctity. He ran away as a boy from his home in Portugal, tended sheep and cattle in Spain, and served as a soldier against the French, and afterwards against the Turks. When about forty years of age, feeling remorse for his wild life, he resolved to devote himself to the ransom of the Christian slaves in Africa, and went thither with the family of an exiled noble, which he maintained by his labor. On his return to Spain he sought to do good by selling holy pictures and books at low prices. At length the hour of grace struck. At Granada a sermon by the celebrated John of Avila shook his soul to its depths, and his expressions of self-abhorrence were so 4 extraordinary that he was taken to the asylum as one mad. There he employed himself in ministering to the sick. On leaving he began to collect homeless poor, and to support them by his work and by begging. One night St. John found in the streets a poor man who seemed near death, and, as was his wont, he carried him to the hospital, laid him on a bed, and went to fetch water to wash his feet. When he had washed them, he knelt to kiss them, and started with awe: the feet were pierced, and the print of the nails bright with an unearthly radiance. He raised his eyes to look, and heard the words, ʺJohn, to Me thou doest all that thou doest to the poor in My name: I reach forth My hand for the alms thou givest; Me dost thou clothe, Mine are the feet thou dost wash.ʺ And then the gracious vision disappeared, leaving St. John filled at once with confusion and consolation. The bishop became the Saintʹs patron, and gave him the name of John of God. When his hospital was on fire, John was seen rushing about uninjured amidst the flames until he had rescued all his poor. After ten years spent in the service of the suffering, the Saintʹs life was fitly closed. He plunged into the river Xenil to save a drowning boy, and died, 1550, of an illness brought on by the attempt, at the age of fifty-five. Sunday High Masses Please continue to use the side doors of St. Alphonsus Church on Sunday mornings until 11:30am. Ash Wednesday Masses on Ash Wednesday will be at 12:10pm and 7:30pm. 7 Marian Hymn All weekend Masses at North American Martyrs Parish will conclude with the seasonal hymn to the Blessed Virgin Mary that, through her intercession, God will bless North American Martyrs Parish with a church. Daily Prayer for the Pope V. Let us pray for Francis our Pope R. May the Lord preserve him, and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth, and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies. Our Father. Hail Mary. O God, Shepherd and Ruler of all Thy faithful people, look mercifully upon Thy servant Francis, whom Thou hast chosen as shepherd to preside over Thy Church: grant him, we beseech Thee, that, by his word and example, he may edify those over whom he has charge, so that together with the flock committed to him, he may attain everlasting life. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen. 7
