Joseph Heffernan, FSSP 2 Parish Priests Vicar Fr. Caleb Insco, FSSP North American Martyrs Parish of the Archdiocese of Seattle is staffed by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. Our parish mission is to sanctify souls through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Sacraments in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. The Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter was founded in 1988 as a Clerical Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right. The mission of the Fraternity is to sanctify priests through the traditional liturgy of the Roman Rite and to place them at the service of the Church. Public Devotions: Holy Hour and Benediction on Fridays at 6:30 pm. Rosary before Sunday 11:45 am Mass and First Saturday at 10:25am. Marian devotions following Wednesday evening Mass. The Mass of the Faithful Know the Mass The first part of the Mass rite, traditionally referred to as the Mass of the Catechumens, is prescribed to purify the heart through contrition in the prayers

3 The Mass of the Faithful Know the Mass The first part of the Mass rite, traditionally referred to as the Mass of the Catechumens, is prescribed to purify the heart through contrition in the prayers at the foot of the altar, the Confiteor, and the Kyrie eleison; it serves to excite devotion through the Gloria; it enlightens the mind through revealed word of God in the Epistle and Gospel. In the earlier centuries of the Church, catechumens preparing for baptism would attend this first part of Mass to benefit from reading of the Epistle and Gospel. They would then depart to receive an instruction elsewhere while the baptized faithful would remain for the Mass of the Faithful. This second part of Mass is comprised of three distinct actions, 1) The Offertory (or Oblation), when the sacrificial elements of bread and wine are set aside and prepared; 2) The Consecration, when the principle sacrificial action of the Mass is accomplished and the bread and wine, prepared at the Offertory, are substantially changed into the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ; and 3) The Communion, when the sacrifice is concluded by Body and Blood of Our Lord are consumed by the priest. These are the three primary acts of the Sacrifice of the Mass. The two parts, the Mass of the Catechumens and the Mass of the Faithful, first dispose the soul and prepare as it were, the good soil within through the spoken word of God, and then deposit into that place made ready the Incarnate Word of God. The liturgical writer of the 1930s and 40s, Pius Parsch, sums up the relationship between the parts, Our Christian faith bestows on us two gifts, faith and grace. We can possess Christ in our souls in a twofold manner: by faith and in the life of grace. In the Mass, these two gifts are bestowed upon us 3 and increased within us again and again. In the Mass of the Catechumens faith is given to us; therefore the Gospel is the climax, and the Credo is the finale. In the Mass of Sacrifice (Mass of the Catechumens), that sacrifice of Christ is reenacted which purchased for us eternal life, and we receive the Eucharist which preserves and nurtures this divine life within us. There is outward expression of the Mass of the pontifical Mass (Mass celebrated by a bishop) : the central point of the Mass of the Catechumens is the cathedra (bishop s chair), the symbol of the Church s office of teaching; around it the entire action of the Mass of the Catechumens takes place. In the Mass of Sacrifice the altar becomes the central point, the symbol of the death of Christ on the cross. (Pius Parsch, The Liturgy of the Mass; translated by Frederic Eckhoff. 1936) Fr. Parsch goes on to quote the Imitation of Christ concerning the two parts of the Mass, These also may be called the two tables, set on the one side and on the other, in the treasury and the jewel-house of holy Church. One table is that of the sacred altar, having the holy bread, which is the precious body of Christ; the other is that of the divine law, containing holy doctrine, teaching men the right faith, and steadily conducting them forward even to that within the veil, where is the holy of holies.whilst I am detained within the prison of this body, I acknowledge myself to stand in need of two things, namely, food and light. Unto me then, thus weak and helpless, Thou hast given Thy Sacred body, for the refreshment of both of my soul and body; and Thy word Thou hast set as a lamp for my feet (Ps. 118:105). Without these two I should not be able to live; for the word of God is the light of my soul, and Thy Sacrament the bread of life (Imitation, Bk. IV, chap 11).

4 Announcements 4 Last Sunday s Sermon Summary During the month of November, the Church encourages us to gain indulgences for the Poor Suffering souls in Purgatory. Indulgences remit the temporal punishment due to sin and they are either partial or plenary. The Pope and those whom he delegates have access to this treasury and they may grant indulgences for either the living or for the dead. One may not gain any indulgence for another person who is living. Plenary indulgences may be gained once a day and to gain a Plenary indulgence one must: 1. Intend to receive the indulgence 2. Do the prescribed work found in the ʺEnchiridion of indulgencesʺ e.g. Praying the Litany of St Joseph, Rosary, mental prayer, De Profundis etc. 3. Receive Sacramental Absolution several days before or after performing the prescribed work 4. Receive Holy Communion 5. Pray for the Intentions of the Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province. (Usually 1 Our father and 1 Hail Mary is prayed for His good intentions.) 6. Be detached from venial and mortal sin 7. If the person is not fully disposed or if the pre scribed work and conditions 3, 4 and 5 are not fulfilled, the indulgence is Partial and may be performed several times on the same day. Feast Day this Week: November 16th St. Gertrude Gertrude was born in the year 1263, of a noble Saxon family, and placed at the age of five for education in the Benedictine abbey of Rodelsdorf. Her strong mind was carefully cultivated, and she wrote Latin with unusual elegance and force; above all, she was perfect in humility and mortification, in obedience, and in all monastic observances. Her life was crowded with wonders. She has in obedience recorded some of her visions, in which she traces in words of indescribable beauty the intimate converse of her soul with Jesus and Mary. She was gentle to all, most gentle to sinners; filled with devotion to the Saints of God, to the souls in purgatory, and above all to the Passion of Our Lord and to His Sacred Heart. She ruled her abbey with perfect wisdom and love for forty years. Her life was one of great and almost continual suffering, and her longing to be with Jesus was not granted till 1334, when she had reached her seventy-second year. Fundraiser We are starting our 1st Fundraiser for the Chartres Pilgrimage today. It will continue the next couple of weekends. This fundraiser is selling pre-made cookie dough from Savory Foods Inc. We will be taking orders for the cookie dough after both weekend Masses. There is a good selection of cookie dough as well as a couple of gluten-free options as well. We will be selling the containers for $18 a piece and cash or check is appreciated. We will receive the cookie dough in time for Christmas! All Saints Potluck Join us today after the 11:45am High Mass for a belated All Saints Party! All are welcome. Please introduce yourself to Fr. Insco if you have not already done so. Remember to wait for the food to be blessed before eating. Assistance in setting up and taking down is always appreciated. The next potluck will be on December 9th when we will have a procession in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. If you d like to be a lead volunteer for the December 9th potluck, please contact Fr. Heffernan or Mary French at the parish office. In order to make our potlucks successful, we need one lead volunteer and 7 additional volunteers. Marian Quilt Please buy a raffle ticket for the Marian Quilt which the parish girl s group has spent many months putting together. Each flower on the quilt is named after Our Lady. The proceeds from the raffle will go
