Our parish mission is to sanctify souls through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Sacraments in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. The Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter was founded in 1988 as a Clerical Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right. The mission of the Fraternity is to sanctify priests through the traditional liturgy of the Roman Rite and to place them at the service of the Church. 3 Know the Mass Advent Taken from Catholic Liturgies by Richard Strapper Inasmuch as the liturgy of this season manifests a longing for light in darkness, for deliverance out of the misery of sin, Advent earnestly recalls the period before Christ and the preparation for the first coming of the Savior, for His birth as man. It also seeks to evoke in the hearts of the faithful and earnest desire to be united with Christ by grace (ch. The orations of the second and third Sunday of Advent). The soul, however, longs to be still more closely united with the Savior, that it may look forward with confidence and joy to His second coming for the judgement. Advent begins with the Sunday nearest to the feast of St. Andrew (Nov. 30th). According to medieval liturgists, St. Andrew inaugurates the ecclesiastical year because he showed his brother Simon Peter the way to Christ. Moreover, this Apostle, the first one to be called by Christ, loved the cross which is the key to the kingdom of God. In the Gospel of the very first Sunday of Advent we are reminded of Christ as the Judge of mankind. At the scene of the judgment we should be seized not only with dread and fear on account of our sins, but more especially with a longing for the manifestation of the glory of the Lord, with a desire to have Him rule over our hearts and sanctify them by His grace. As the pious Israelites rejoiced in beholding the bright cloud, the symbol of God s nearness, over the tabernacle, we Christians should also watch with joy for the Savior, the Founder of our Church, Who is approaching with His grace; we should unite ourselves with Him even more intimately in the liturgy and should be ruled by His dispositions, especially His perfect submission to the Father. The first responsory of Matins for the first Sunday of Advent describes this attitude of watchfulness: Looking from afar off, behold, I see the coming of the power of God. The liturgy of the four weeks of Advent is partly serious, partly joyful. In harmony with the solemn character of the season, there are the exhortations to the faithful to prepare their hearts for the coming of Christ, frequently expressed in the words of John the Baptist; the references to the appearance of this great preacher of penance; the law forbidding the solemnization of marriage; the silence of the organ at high Masses of the season; the omission of the Gloria except in the Masses of the feasts; the use of vestments of violet color, and the practice of fasting. The joy of Advent is expressed by the frequent recurrence of the Alleluia at Mass and in the Divine Office; by the consoling lessons from the prophecy of Isaias in the Breviary; the gradation of the description of Messianic joy, coming to a climax toward the end of Advent. Joy is manifested in a special manner on the third Sunday of Advent by the playing of the organ, the decoration of the altar with flowers, and the rose colored vestments. The feast of the Immaculate Conception and the frequently recurring mention of the Blessed Virgin point to the morning star of the redemption. Finally, there is the joyful period of proximate preparation consisting of seven days before the vigil of Christmas and characterized by the O-antiphons. Each of these antiphons begins with a different biblical invocation of the coming Savior. The last one is, O Emmanuel, our King and Lawgiver, Expectation and Savior of the nations; do Thou come to save us, O Lord our God. 3

4 Announcements Last Sunday s Sermon Summary The destruction of Jerusalem and the temple by the Romans was foretold by Our Lord. God revealed to King Salomon centuries prior that infidelity to His law would bring such a calamity that it would be a by-word among the nations. With the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, symbols of might in the eyes of Israel, we should expect the end times to include the complete failure of modern symbols of the height and might of mankind. Only the words of Christ will remain. Therefore we must invest our trust and confidence in Him and Him alone. Feast Day this Week: St. Francis Xavier Dec. 3rd Francis Xavier, a young Spanish gentleman, in the dangerous days of the Reformation, was making a name for himself as a Professor of Philosophy in the University of Paris, and had seemingly no higher aim, when St. Ignatius of Loyola won him to heavenly thoughts. After a brief apostolate amongst his countrymen in Rome he was sent by St. Ignatius to the Indies, where for twelve years he was to wear himself out, bearing the Gospel to Hindostan, to Malacca, and to Japan. Thwarted by the jealousy, covetousness, and carelessness of those who should have helped and encouraged him, neither their opposition nor the difficulties of every sort which he encountered could make him slacken his labors for souls. The vast kingdom of China appealed to his charity, and he was resolved to risk his life to force an entry, when God took him to Himself, and on the 2d of December, 1552, he died, like Moses, in sight of the land of promise. Parking Lot Please be aware that the large parking lot at St. Alphonsus will be locked at around 9pm every night due to the Christmas tree sales. To avoid having your car locked in, depart before 9pm. 4 Fr. Insco Away Fr. Insco will be away until December 12th. Calendars North American Martyrs is happy to offer an FSSP North American District calendar to each registered family of the parish. They are available in the vestibule. Please take one per household. Altar Server Initiation and Promotion The annual ceremony of Altar Server initiation and promotion will take place after the 11:45 Mass today. Choir After the 11:45 Mass today there will be a meeting in the McGrath Room for anyone interested in joining the choir. No commitment necessary, it is only an interest meeting. The possibility will be discussed of forming a 2nd choir which meets and practices north of Seattle. Chartres Look out for baked goods from our pilgrims traveling to Chartres after Mass. In addition to the individual pilgrims raising money, we are also collecting donations to offset and even cover the cost of renting a bus for our parish Advent During Advent, before Monday and Wednesday evening Masses, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for adoration. In addition to private intentions brought before the Blessed Sacrament, our public parish intentions for this time of Eucharist Adoration will be 1) Thanksgiving for blessings and graces received and North American Martyrs; 2) Petition for aid in overcoming faults and healing of wounds which hinder access to Christ; 3) Petition for a church for North American Martyrs. Beginning on December 2nd, the first Sunday of Advent, we will pray the rosary before each Saturday and Sunday Mass in honor of Our Lady in petition for a church for North American Martyrs Parish.

5 Announcements continued Adoration The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in simple exposition before Monday and Wednesday night Masses. This means that the tabernacle door will be opened and the ciborium will be brought to the front of the tabernacle. Reverence to the Blessed Sacrament exposed consists of a double genuflection (that is a kneeling momentarily on both knees and bowing from the shoulders) upon arrival and departure. Men s Altar Server Training Following Mass on the Mondays and Wednesdays until Christmas, Low Mass server training will be offered for any men of the parish who are interested in learning. There is an increasing number of Masses without servers, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. The goal is to provide a server for every public Mass at North American Martyrs. Weekend Masses: December 7th 9th Keep in mind that there will be two Masses on both First Friday (12:10pm and 7:30pm) and Saturday (8am and 11am). There is no evening Mass on December 8th. Our Lady of Guadalupe Procession and Potluck After Mass next Sunday, December 9th, we will sing the Litany of Our Lady and process with the banner of Our Lady of Guadalupe to the family center for our annual fiesta in her honor. Everyone is welcome! Stick around for the pinatas and raffle drawing for the Marian Quilt. Many hands make light work! To make a potluck run, there are many little jobs (15-30 minutes, tops) - a lot of work for just 2-3 people - but very easy if many people take a little piece. If you are attending even for a short time, please consider a job - or sign your older kids up! Your contribution will be much appreciated. Once the job is done, youʹve done your part and you are free to enjoy the potluck. See Rene Peterson for more details. Weʹve been light on food at the last few potlucks.
