1 The Sea Net October 2011 ~ Volume 11 Issue 6 The Rt. Rev. Philip M. Duncan, II, Bishop of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast The Rev. R. Barry Crow, Transitional Deacon, St. Andrew s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church The Rev. David S. Luckett, Priest Associate, St. Andrew s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church From the Transitional Deacon S t. Andrew s By-the-Sea has been a busy place during the month of September. The annual fashion show, luncheon, and silent auction were a huge success. Many people within the parish worked tirelessly to make these events successful. To each and every one of you who helped in any way, THANK YOU! As September came to a close and October began, we also found ourselves working again during the annual seafood festival, offering our front and back parking lots to visitors during the event for a donation. This endeavor was also successful, as many people within the parish worked tirelessly and gave of their time to greet visitors and direct traffic in our parking lots. To each and every one of you who helped in any way, THANK YOU! In the case of both events, it is important to remember that the proceeds are used in our parish s ministries as we provide for those who come to us needing food and other assistance. Remember the words of our Lord:... For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. (Matthew 25:35-36) What an awesome calling and what a great privilege! While we have been busy, let us not forget that many of our fall and winter visitors are returning to spend time in Destin. We welcome those who are already here and we look forward to welcoming those who will come a bit later in the year. How exciting it is to have our brothers and sisters in Christ returning to worship with us, fellowship with us, and engage in the work of ministry with us for the fall and winter months! Faithfully, Barry SPOTLIGHTS St. Andrew s Seventh Annual Parish Family Picnic Saturday, October 22 10:00 am until 2:00 pm at Clement Taylor Park (Calhoun Avenue, Destin) As in years past, we ll have wonderful food, great company, and some serious games! 3 I Wonder: Musings from your Senior Warden T he first Sunday of Advent is November 27, It is the start of the new church year. We have seen several changes this past year and there will probably be more to come in Looking over these past years as your Senior Warden, there are things I wonder about. I share these with you and ask you to reflect on them as you read. They are in no particular order of importance. In one of the closing prayers of Eucharist, there are the words "and now Father, send, us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord." How do you do that? From the Baptismal service (BCP, page 308): "...you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ's own forever." What does that mean to you? Senior Warden s Corner Kathy McGee Do you know the vestry members? Do you know what work they do? Do you care? Is Sunday a day of worship for you and your family? If not, why not? When you share the peace on Sunday, who do you turn to first, someone you know or a stranger? Who is your Shepherd? Do you know the people in your Shepherd Group? Why do we have Shepherd Groups? How many needy, hungry people do we feed every Monday? How many lunch bags do we give out every week? How much do lunch bag supplies cost? How many bags of groceries do we give away each week? Where does that food come from? Do you read The Sea Net, our monthly newsletter? Do you read our ed Weekly Update? Do you feel connected to St. Andrew's By-the-Sea? If not, why not? Do you know George Johnson, Aimee Dallaire, Russell Fryar, John Whalen? If you enjoyed the music on a particular Sunday, did you tell Lois and the choir? Did you thank them for their work? Do you feel blessed? How do you share your blessings with others? Do you pray daily? Do you pray with others, your spouse, partner, friend, children, grandchildren? Do you stand or kneel during the Eucharist? Does it matter? Why is the Baptismal font at the back of the church? Do you bless yourself with the holy water? What do you know about our Columbarium? What about the vigil candles? Do you have a space reserved for your ashes? Sunday Fellowship: Do you enjoy the food? Do you always sit with the same people or do you introduce yourself to someone you don't know? Do you help with this ministry? When was the last time you invited someone to church, breakfast, pot luck? Why haven't you? Is our vision statement below a true statement? What does it mean to you? St. Andrew s By-the-Sea Vision Statement In Christ s name, St. Andrew s By-the-Sea, Destin s oldest church, is a dynamic Episcopal congregation, sustained by sacramental worship. We intentionally welcome and respect the dignity of all and serve those in need both within and beyond our walls. Please share your thoughts with me so I will wonder no more. Peace and blessings, Kathy McGee, Senior Warden 2011 October 2011 Page 3 Volume 11 Issue 6
4 Junior Warden s Notebook submitted by Tom Hanlin Junior Warden s List 1. The narthex ladies room sinks have been replaced after rusting through. The library ceiling, damaged from roof leakage, has been repaired and repainted and the library is back in service. Damaged ceiling tiles in the clothing pantry and hallway have been replaced. AC Unit #21 in the old sanctuary has been repaired, the seventh unit to fail since Jan. 1. The large outside security light over the shower door failed again and has been replaced. A parking lot light has been replaced. Jerry McGee has applied fall fertilizer and insect control to the church roses, and prunes them every week. Motleys supported fashion show setup and re-set needs. The audio room door had to be forced open due to a lock problem and the resulting door frame damage is scheduled for repair. Another AC return air vent has been installed in the parish hall to accommodate its forced air requirement. We have completed repainting the church traffic cones which were in deplorable condition. We hauled two loads of trash to help a parishioner who has relocated, and are scheduled to do groundskeeping for a parishioner who bid for Motley services at the silent auction. A set of walkie-talkies has been procured to enable Motleys to perform chores that need out-of-sight coordination. The Motleys have been trained by Jerry McGee to open and close the columbarium so that the church has a redundant capacity to perform that chore whenever needed. 2. We have not yet completed the shower work. We have just discovered a new problem there, a possible leak inside the wall. We expect to finish the shower work before cold weather. 3. Fred Fenn has done considerable work to lease the education building ground floor, including signage, advertising, and more. We have some work to do in order to clear out the space. We are in the process of identifying where to relocate bikes, Christmas decorations, bookcases, and cabinets so that the space will show better. 4. Short-term work Re-set Motley shed and storage closet Ongoing greenscaping maintenance Regrout exterior narthex tiles Install vent fan, rebuild shower threshhold, repaint exterior slab to shower Clean and test gutters (October) Paint kitchen door 5. Long-term work Restripe parking lot Replace sections of framing in bell tower Touch up church exterior and bell tower paint 6. For 2012 budget Parish hall west wall gutter, downspouts, drain pipe Mountain Drive sign, narthex rear sign, and parking lot demarcation signs. 5 Outreach Program Highlight St. Andrew s Outreach Programs are under the overall direction of Jennifer Lee, Social Justice Committee Chair, who authorizes all expenditures from the Outreach Fund and Outreach Budget. In each of the next few newsletters, we will highlight one of our outreach programs, presenting them in the order in which each began at St. Andrew s. Monday Soup & Sandwich Lunch Program Guidelines As we began to get to know the folks we were helping regularly with food, we realized that many of them rarely had a decent meal, much less a meal prepared by someone else. In March 2006, Jennifer and William Lee began our Monday Soup & Sandwich Lunch ministry. On Mondays, volunteers set up tables, heat homemade soup or other food (donated by several people in the community as well as by St. Andrew s members), make sandwiches and/or salads, serve and then join for lunch anyone who comes in for the meal, and finally clean up the kitchen. How can you support this ministry? contribute money to the SABTS Outreach Fund, putting Monday lunch in the memo line of your check volunteer to host or cook for or help serve our Monday lunch group Destin Seafood Festival Update For the third year in a row, St. Andrew s provided parking for the Destin Seafood Festival: this year, just two days, September 30 and October 1. The chart below re-caps each year s parking donations collected and expenses. This year s net $4, goes entirely to help fund our Social Justice / Outreach ministries. Thanks to everyone who helped! Stu Smith & Joyce Waters-Smith UTO Ingathering: Sunday, October 30, 2011 O nce there was a man who walked with a limp, and he cursed his luck until he met a man with no legs. Probably we wouldn t be human if we didn t sometimes feel like this man, but as we grow in wisdom, we realize how fortunate we ve been in our lives, and how many are less fortunate. Helping those in need is a foundation of our faith. Christians believe in helping others. Just look what we few did this week to benefit those we serve through our local outreach programs. But we need also to be mindful that the Episcopal Church also reaches out to those in other places. We help that ministry by acknowledging those needs, throughout the world, in our devotions and through our United Thank Offering a particular tangible reminder to ourselves that it s also our job to help pull that plow. We can do that by dropping coins, the day s change, into our UTO boxes, every single day, giving thanks for your blessings. It s a symbolic act, meaningful to your church and faith. Every cent collected goes directly to church outreach projects which alleviate clearly defined, urgent needs. There are examples on the national UTO webpage: In this diocese, our congregation has been among the most generous contributors, especially for its size, and we often out-do bigger churches. But then, outreach is our shared vision, identity, commitment and joy at St. Andrew s. Nobody does it better than we do. Our next UTO in-gathering, at which we will collect your gifts, will be in five weeks, October 30. Before that time Joy Tway will speak more about this, and the projects funded. She has in-person experience with seeing UTO at work. For now, dust off your UTO box or take one as you leave church or fellowship. Keep it on your dresser so that it s in view every day. Use it for its intended purpose, and to help you stay focused. If you haven t been using it, there s no need to panic. It ll take only a second to catch up. As the saying goes, The Lord loves soft money. We re collecting October 30, five weeks from today. Don t let anybody give more than you do! Kathy McGee is our UTO coordinator. Our job is to keep her up, counting all night, with Jerry on the adding machine. Be thankful for what you have, my friends. Be thankful you re in a position to help others. Remember your example.
