RCIA - RITE OF WELCOME The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) calls for parish communities to celebrate a Rite of Welcome on the First Sunday of Advent as an official reception of people who have expressed an interest in becoming members of the Catholic Church. Accordingly, next weekend, at the 11:30 a.m. Mass, candidates, who are to be received into full communion with the Catholic Church, will participate in this ceremony. Please keep these brothers and sisters in your prayers that the Holy Spirit will continue to assist them on their journey of discernment. Kingship of Truth Are you the king of the Jews? asked Pilate. Rather than give an answer, Jesus queried Pilate s authority for asking the question. The identity of Jesus is essentially tied to his mission, which is our salvation. Central to his mission is his redemptive suffering to restore humanity back to God. The kingship of Jesus is not to be defined by Pilate, in other words, be subjected to human interpretation. This is why Jesus himself categorically states I am a king. In a way, we Christians too should not allow the world to define who we are for us. We should rather let the world know who we are through an unequivocal affirmation of what Jesus has done for us. Jesus draws a contrast between Pilate and himself, between this world order and the heavenly kingdom. While earthly rulers subvert the truth for their own selfish purposes at the expense of the common good, Jesus represents the heavenly kingdom built on truth, which is neither subjective nor relative. He witnesses to the truth through a total self-offering. His kingship enlightens us, guides us and leads every soul yearning for fulfilment to their ultimate happiness in God. Jesus emphasizes how he has come to bear witness to the truth and those who are on the side of truth will listen to his voice. The manifestations of the truth are unity among peoples and nations, peaceful lives and families, presence of the spirit in our lives, as well as other graces of God. As we commemorate the feast of Christ the King, we ponder on what no earthly king can grant us as our Lord Jesus reminds us he is there to lead us to the Father if we listen to his voice. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life! (Jn. 14:6) Father Ben Faneye. O.P. ADVENT VESPERS :00 p.m. Musical Prelude - 5:30 p.m. Evening Prayer (Vespers) November 29, 2015 (1st Sunday of Advent) Gregory Glessner, violin & Daniel Glessner, piano and organ December 6, 2015 (2nd Sunday of Advent) Robert Barbarino, Organist & Music Director, St. Patrick, Carlisle December 13, 2015 (3rd Sunday of Advent) at Saint Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg. We encourage you to attend Vespers there at 4:00 p.m. NO Services at Good Shepherd today. December 20, 2015 (4th Sunday of Advent) Members of the O Donnell Family ADVENT NOVENA Starting on St. Andrew s feast day, November 30, the following beautiful prayer is traditionally recited fifteen (15) times a day until Christmas. This is a very meditative prayer that helps us increase our awareness of the real meaning of Christmas and helps us prepare ourselves spiritually for His coming: Hail and blessed be the hour and moment In which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires (here mention your request) through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His Blessed Mother. Amen.

3 WEST SHORE ADVENT PENANCE SERVICES MARK YOUR CALENDARS and plan to attend one of the following Parish Penance Services. Sun., Dec. 13 St. Katharine Drexel, Mech. at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon Sun., Dec. 13 St. Theresa, New Cumberland Mon., Dec. 14 Our Lady of Lourdes, Enola Wed., Dec. 16 Good Shepherd, Camp Hill Sun., Dec. 20 St. Joseph, Mechanicsburg at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon ALTAR BELLS AT GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH There have been a number of requests for restoring the use of altar bells at Mass in our church. We have been training our altar servers on the proper use of the altar bells at Mass. The use of bells in the Church dates back to the fifth century, when Saint Paulinus, the Bishop of Nola, introduced them as a means to summon monks to worship. People in their private prayer will also use bells to signal to themselves that they are about to enter into a sacred time of prayer. In the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church, an altar bell is typically a small hand-held bell or set of bells. The primary reason now for the use of altar bell(s) is to create a joyful noise to the Lord as a way to give thanks for the miracle taking place atop the Altar of Sacrifice. Additionally, the function of the bell(s) is to focus the attention of those attending the Mass that a supernatural event is taking place on the altar. The bells are rung at three points during the celebration of the Mass: 1. Altar bells are first rung prior to the consecration at the epiclesis when the priest prays to the Holy Spirit to change the gifts of bread and wine into the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ. 2. The bells are rung a second time as the priest elevates and presents the Body of Christ. 3. The bells are rung a third time as the celebrant elevates and presents the chalice filled with the Precious Blood. The altar bells we will be using this weekend are given in Thanksgiving for the Servants of the Servant. Parish Office Hours - Thanksgiving Please note that the Parish Office will close at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25. Please consider participating in this worthy effort. What do you need to do to participate? On the weekends of December 5/6 and 12/13 Angel Tree ornament tags will be available on Christmas Trees in the narthexes of the church. Parishioners are invited to take an ornament, print your name and phone number on the attached slip at Church, leave the slip in the basket by the tree, and return the gift listed on the ornament. Gifts may be returned to the Church narthexes the weekend of December 12/13 to the Parish Office narthex during the week before 5:00 p.m. or on Saturday, December 19, to the Parish Hall between 10:00 a.m. and Noon. The gift should be wrapped with the tree ornament tag attached to the outside for identification and distribution. Each Angel Tree gift tag is coded for a particular recipient. Therefore, it is important that all the ornaments that are taken be returned with the gift that is described on the ornament. Several ornaments list a money donation that will be converted into a gift card for food. Some ornaments ask for gift cards to particular local stores. You can save yourself shopping time by buying these cards through the Good Shepherd School Scrip Card Program in the Parish Office. Everyone knows the joy of receiving gifts. Many of us can only imagine the disheartening feeling parents experience when they are not able to provide a gift for their children. Please join in this worthy project and help keep alive the joy of giving and receiving during this blessed season. If you have any questions about this project, you are welcome to call the Religious Education Office at Our thanks to the Religious Education Office and the Youth of the parish for the service they offer this worthwhile project and to Bonny for coordinating the project. Thank you for YOUR interest and generosity. DEADLINE FOR GIFT RETURNS: Saturday, December 19 10:00 a.m. Noon in the Parish Hall SCHOOL NEWS: AN OPEN HOUSE will be held today, Sunday, November 22, at 11:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd School for potential students and their parents as well as for parishioners. The Compassionate Friends will meet on Tuesday, November 24, at 7:00 p.m., in the All Purpose Room at Good Shepherd Church. The Compassionate Friends is a self-help group offering support to individuals and families following the loss of a child, grandchild or sibling. The group meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd. This month we will have the annual Christmas ornament exchange. There will be a separate discussion for those who do not wish to participate in the ornament exchange. There is no cost to attend and all are welcome. For more information call Mary Kay at

5 MASS AND CONFESSION TIME CHANGE After consultation with the Parish Pastoral Council, the diocese and the people who attend the Saturday evening Mass, it is clear that the greater majority of our parishioners would like the Mass on Saturday evening to begin at 5:00 p.m. And so, beginning with the Fourth Sunday of Advent which is December 19, 2015, the Saturday evening Mass will begin at 5:00 p.m. This will also necessitate a change in the Saturday afternoon Confession schedule.
