3 The Joy of the Gospel Finding God in Our Common Poverty Ronald Raab, CSC Holy Cross Father Ronald Patrick Raab serves as pastor of the Tri-Community Parish of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He broadcasts a weekly Scripture commentary, On the Margins, from KBVM FM. Learn more at ronaldraab.com. Last year, just before Advent, I was sitting in the office of a social worker in Colorado Springs. She was listing the services her agency offers for youth who live on the streets, who couch surf with friends, or who have been abused and neglected by their families. The social worker told me a story of a family who had many children. When the mother gave birth to another child, the parents told the oldest child they could no longer afford to feed him and that he would have to leave the house. He was about thirteen years old. I never heard the real reasons for the parents decision to abandon their oldest child nor do I know how the courts might have handled the family situation. All I heard was that a young man was asked to leave his family and he did so. My mind swirls with unanswered questions. My heart still aches for him and his family. This situation is in our lifetimes, not in ancient days in another country or during the Great Depression in our land. These realities rest in our communities now, and someone in our parish assemblies should be listening, especially during this Advent season. Advent challenges us to cultivate a desire for God. We wake up to realize that God comes to us in our trials and tribulations, our agonies and worries. We wait for relief from our deepest hungers and for forgiveness from our most violent sins. We wait for our own hearts to wake up to God, who crashes into our lives unexpectedly yet lovingly to prepare a place for love, compassion, and joy. Advent gives us heart-pounding hope that all people will find shelter, comfort, and warmth because that is exactly what Jesus longed for in his first days here on earth. Advent taps into the longing that ancient Israel possessed through the words of Isaiah. This season opens our ears again to the voice of John the Baptist that hurls hope across the generations. We wait again for miracles to be borne, for hatred to be resolved, and for peace to thrive in our days. We wait for parents to accept their children, for tired and fearful parents to feed their families. We wait for parishes to care for all lives of innocent children who have been brought into the world. Pope Francis is a new light in our Advent search for God s desire to be among us. In Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel), he challenges all Christians to become a church which is poor and for the poor (198). Pope Francis understands that we will never hear the needs of people who search for hope in their lives when we cling We will never hear the needs of people who search for hope in their lives when we cling only to our riches. 14

Today s Liturgy provides articles, music suggestions, and these columns to assist you in your musical preparation for worship. The columns focus on new music, liturgical preparation, and creative ideas, and they are always written with the guidelines of the American bishops and the latest music and liturgy documents in mind. Often they explain the Scripture of the day so you can lead your musicians in prayer with more understanding and depth. They are and always have been directed toward the goal of full, conscious, and active participation of the people in liturgy. How are the music suggestions assembled? After using the scriptural database, I take responsibility for the order and selection. The challenge is not so much the titles, but examining all the verses of the texts. Except for an occasional alleluia that inappropriately slipped in (twice in twenty-five years. Argh!), these planning pages have stood the test of time and will continue to strive to serve you. That said, it is important for you to select music that suits your pastoral situation. Obviously, titles don t reveal the entire text. Read through all the verses before making your final decision. Are there enough verses for your Communion procession? How can your organ registration reflect the texts? Are the texts completely appropriate for the season and the ritual action? Is the text Trinitarian? If so, be sure to include the entire Trinity even if you must use one more verse. Either that or change course! Remember: there is no Gloria during Advent (except on solemnities), and Tuesday December 1 is World AIDS Day.
