3 New and Revised Mass Settings: A Closer Look OCP has published more than thirty new and revised Mass settings in response to the implementation of the new Roman Missal. To help music directors find Masses that fit the needs of their communities, we are pleased to provide a closer look at four recently published settings. Mass of the Holy Angels Glory to God Gerard Chiusano Voicing: SATB Instrumentation: Organ/keyboard, guitar, solo instrument I and II in C, brass quartet, timpani, hand bells ocp.org/holyangels Exclusively online! TL: How does this setting draw assemblies into worship at Mass? GC: The lead-ins for the assembly are meant to give an inescapable impulse to sing out in prayer and worship. The rhythm and spirit of the text guide the rhythm and shape of the music. I believe that, in so doing, the music has a much more natural feel in the voice and in the heart, enabling the community to enter into the prayer in a much more profound way. TL: What was your inspiration for Mass of the Holy Angels? GC: Originally written for my parish community (Our Lady of the Holy Angels) where I served as music director for more than ten years I composed Mass of the Holy Angels to be a setting that possesses a sense of musical urgency and is accessible to young and old OCP. For more information on Advent, including liturgical updates, customs, and resources, you will enjoy Paul Covino s Ritual Notes beginning on page 32. Let s first take a peek at the Gospel for this year Luke. Let not the placement of the Advent wreath and other practical liturgical matters distract us from our primary purpose for ministry: to proclaim the Gospel and to deepen our relationship with the Lord. The oldest Gospel was written by Mark, followed by Luke. Like Paul, Luke never met Jesus personally. He wrote around AD for a new, modern generation of Christians whose circumstances were different from those of their parents generation. They had more money, and as the Church spread throughout the Roman Empire, it became more urban than rural. Scripture scholar Benedictine Abbot Jerome Kodel lists Luke s major themes as: 1) salvation for all, 2) mercy and forgiveness, 3) joy, 4) the journey (Jesus public ministry), 5) modern Christian living, 6) fulfillment of prophecy, and 7) Ascension (The Collegeville Bible Commentary, Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, ). The infancy narratives the story of Jesus conception, birth, and childhood are part of Luke s unique contribution to the Gospel story. The first readings during Advent concern the future and are taken from four Hebrew Testament prophets: Jeremiah, Baruch, Zephaniah, and Micah. This Saturday, December 1, is World AIDS Day. Consult the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) website for a prayer for HIV/AIDS victims and those who minister to them (tinyurl.com/hiv-aids-prayer).
