2 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 3 Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church THE SEASON OF LENT Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of one of the seasons in the Catholic Church s liturgical year the season of Lent. During Lent, by virtue of our baptism, we make a sincere effort to grow in our relationship with Jesus and with our brothers and sisters. Cooperating with the grace of the Holy Spirit, we attempt to become more aware of those things in our lives which weaken our relationship with God and with others. We also can take advantage of the spiritual opportunities offered through the church to strengthen what is weak in us and to loosen the grip of sin in our lives. Lent is a season of conversion preparing us for the celebration of Jesus s Resurrection on Easter Sunday. There will be a second collection taken up at the masses. The second collection is designated for the CHURCH IN CENTRAL & EASTERN EUROPE. Marriage Orientation 2015 When: Thursdays Time: 7:00pm Where: Parish Hall Dates: Last Thursday in April, July, & October Who: Open to any engaged couple wishing to get married in the Catholic Church For more information contact Ann Marie at the church office Monday-Friday, 9am-12:30pm / 1:30pm-5pm or at secretary_shc@att.net ANOINTING OF THE SICK The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated on Sunday, February 8th at 1:30pm for the elderly, those who are suffering from serious illness, or for those who are about to undergo surgery. BAPTISM Call or stop by the office to inquire and register for baptism classes with Marie three months prior to baptism date. Her office hours are: Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:00am - 5:00pm. Parents and godparents are required to attend the baptismal classes for three consecutive Tuesdays of each month (with the exception during the month of March) at 7pm in the CCD building (Fort Clark street entrance). The February baptism classes are scheduled for the 10th and 17th -the group baptism is on February 22nd. Baptisms are on Sundays after the 12pm mass in the church. It is:- for those who have never been baptized. - for those who were baptized in another faith tradition and who now wish to inquire about the Catholic faith. - for Catholics who were baptized but never Confirmed and/or made their First Communion. - for Catholics who are not married in the church and would like to have their marriage blessed in order to receive the Sacraments and for anyone who just wants to learn about the Catholic faith and share it with others. Our classes meets every Sunday after the 9:30 a.m. mass in the CCD Bldg rooms 3 and 4. Interested persons may call Ms. Oralia Barker at Extra Ordinary Minister of Communion Training When: Thursdays Time: 7:00pm Where: CCD building/church (when calls for practice) Dates: February 12th February 19th (Sick Minister Training) Who: Open to any Catholic in good standing. If married, must be married through Catholic Church. FAMILY MASS FOR CCD FAMILIES EVERY 3rd SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH AT 12 NOON CCD Attention Parents of CCD Students-please note the following information: First Holy Communion will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2015 during the 5pm mass. If your child is attending Communion classes, please see that she/he does not miss a class. High School Confirmation Students: Confirmation will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at 7pm Confirmation students must hand in the following in order to be confirmed: 1. All Confirmation students must complete 15 service hours (volunteer hours) 2. All Confirmation students must go to Confession 3-2 weeks before March 25 and hand in the Confession slip to the CCD office 3. Name of Sponsor & the sponsors copy of Confirmation Certificate. If sponsor is married, proof of the Sacrament of Matrimony Certificate is requested. 4. All Confirmation students are required to attend the retreat on Saturday, February 7th in the Parish Hall. 5. Saint name selected by the Confirmation student and a (One and half) 1 1/2 to 2 page report on the Saint chosen must be submitted ASAP. 6. $20 FEE Upon payment received a bible will be issued to the Confirmation student. Payment to be made in the CCD office. CONTACT CCD OFFICE AT for more info! Family Faith Formation-Attention all Sacred Heart Families-we will begin a pilot program titled Family Faith Formation. This will be a monthly class designed to assist parents and their children increase their knowledge of our Catholic faith and put into practice. We will have our 1st class Tue. Feb. 10th in the Parish Hall starting with a light dinner of holy hot dogs at 6pm followed by class. 6 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 7 Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church YOUTH MINISTRIES Mission of Life Teen and Edge: As a Eucharist-centered movement within the Roman Catholic Church, Life Teen leads teenagers and their families into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. With the Blessed Virgin Mary as our intercessor and guide, Life Teen seeks to unleash the fullness of the Sacramental power present within the young Church. Through powerful Eucharistic encounters and engaging catechesis, our Edge (middle school) and Life Teen (high school) teens are immersed in a dynamically Catholic parish culture. With the parish as their true home, our teens are then further strengthened by our Events, Resources, and Digital (web and social media) evangelization. Our goal is not only to reach today s teens, but also to create an environment where Catholic teenagers feel supported and engaged the other 167 hours a week, outside of Sunday mass. Life Teen High School Youth Ministry meets every other Sunday, starting with Mass at 12pm, and then continues at 3pm in the parish hall. All high school aged teens are welcome to join us. Our theme for this semester is Person of Christ. Join us for fun, fellowship and journey deeper into our Catholic faith. 8 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 9 Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church World Marriage Day A Day to Celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage A sage once wrote that a good marriage is like a fire around which others come to warm themselves. So, as we celebrate World Marriage Day on February 8, we realize that no matter our station in life married, single or religious we have benefited from this sacred covenant relationship whether through the example of our parents, grandparents, and other role models, or through our own stewardship of the marriage covenant. For the Catholic steward, marriage goes far beyond the legal or societal agreement that our culture might define. For the Catholic steward, marriage is a sacrament that fosters a sacred covenant; establishing family and nurturing the domestic church which we understand is fundamental to our spiritual development. Marriage brings us countless blessings, but is met with many obstacles. Busy schedules, the challenges of parenthood, the strains of finances, mortgages, issues of health and aging all of these test the bonds of even the finest unions. World Marriage Day, observed on the second Sunday of each February, is sponsored by Worldwide Marriage Encounter, associated with Catholic Marriage Encounter. Many Catholics have participated in a Marriage Encounter weekend, but no matter how we have endeavored to grow in and to support our marriages, or the marriages of those close to us, we know that marriage does take effort, continuing commitment, deep prayer, great communication, a good sense of humor and faithful love. Many parishes celebrate World Marriage Day by the renewal of vows, the celebration of special anniversaries, or even candlelit dinners in the parish hall. Take time this February to celebrate marriage, whether by setting aside a special time to devote to your own spouse, or by honoring the marriages that have warmed you and nurtured you throughout your life. Día Mundial del Matrimonio Un Día para Celebrar el Sacramento del Matrimonio Un sabio escribió una vez que un buen matrimonio es como el fuego alrededor del cual otros vienen a calentarse. Las agendas ocupadas, los desafíos de la paternidad, las tensiones de las finanzas, las hipotecas, los asuntos de salud y envejecimiento todo esto pone a prueba los vínculos hasta de las uniones más fuertes. El Día Mundial del Matrimonio, señalado el segundo domingo de febrero, es patrocinado por los Encuentros Matrimoniales Mundiales, asociado con los Encuentros Matrimoniales Católicos. Muchos católicos han participado en un fin de semana de Encuentros Matrimoniales; aunque no importa cómo, nosotros nos hemos esforzado para crecer y apoyar nuestro matrimonio, o el matrimonio de quienes están cerca de nosotros, sabemos que el matrimonio requiere esfuerzo, compromiso continuo, oración profunda, una gran comunicación, sentido del humor y amor fiel.
