5 Pastoral Message Dear Parishioners of our Beloved Assumption, As we begin August, we celebrate our 4 th anniversary together with me as the pastor privileged to serve you. It is at this time that it is natural for us to reflect on our time together; to reflect on what has brought us joy, and, on those things that do not cause us to celebrate. It is also a time to look forward to what is to come! First, always first, are just a few things that have brought us joy: We have been blessed to add 38 new families to our membership over the past 4 years. Many moved into the area, many found the faith and were added to the Orthodox body of faithful, and a few were already in the Louisville area and became committed to the parish. This is probably what most excites me being able to receive those whom the Lord has entrusted to us! We have seen an ordination of a priest, Fr. William Redmon, from our community and will soon see an ordination of a Deacon, in Ryan Leathers. Blessings that many parishes, even much larger, never experience. We have added a few new fellowship ministries Men s Club (to begin again in the Fall), Restaurant Circle, Comedy fellowship events, and the Blessing of the Ohio River (although not purely fellowship). We brought the GreekFest to our parish grounds allowing for the community to come to our home and for our people to be less stressed and more connected to each other. It s still a lot of work, but it s allowed for greater community fellowship, inside and out. We have seen a few ministries surge. Children s Greek Dance and School are 2 that come to mind. What wonderful healthy opportunities for our children to be together in fellowship! We have seen a great change to our grounds now the neighborhood can see us! We are truly thankful to our YAL who stepped in and helped and continues to help to keep the grounds looking good. We are now a 501(c)(3). Is this important? It may be Wait and see
6 Pastoral Message There are a few things that have not been cause for celebration: We have seen 34 families leave the parish. Almost all have moved to other areas of the country; and, although we are happy for them, it is difficult to lose those we love. A few have transferred to heaven; and they are greatly missed. We are in the midst of a lull in GOYA. We have a lot of children in grade school and middle school, so this is a temporary lull. Soon, our youth groups will be once again active and growing. Looking forward, I am truly excited! We have so many good ministry leaders that have put in place solid foundations. In fact, these foundations are so strong that our current structures can t contain them. We dance, cook, and gather off the property. I know this is about to end with what I believe is the most important thing that we will accomplish in 2019 the building of our community center. This building is not for aesthetics or prestige it is to service all of the ministries that we already have. We will see immediate benefits in religious education, fellowship and outreach. Organizations like the Philoptochos, AHEPA, Daughters of Penelope, Youth (Groups and Dance) will immediately port their efforts and see greater results from these efforts. Events like the GreekFest and the Glendi will become even simpler and more economical to host. We will have a place to celebrate the marriages and baptisms of our faithful and more easily comfort our families with makarias following the funerals of their loved ones. This one accomplishment will allow us to truly reach out to the people of Louisville in evangelization. I truly have been blessed to be placed in such an incredible community with truly amazing people. To be at this parish at this time is not a coincidence. I believe that God placed me here with you to use the gifts he has given me to help in the building of the community center. I also believe that he has sent many others here to accomplish this same task and I am truly humbled by God s providence and the magnitude of those he has sent to work side-by-side with me in this task. On paper, a community of this size should not be able to accomplish this task in reality, it s a done deal! This is only through His grace and providence!
7 Pastoral Message I truly hope and pray that each of you sees His hand upon our parish and are humbled by it. He has a plan for our small parish in Louisville a plan that we cannot fully know - a plan that appears to be greater than we can comprehend! With His grace and the commitment of every person in our community, we will continue to grow as a beacon of the faith! I am truly grateful for all that have served in the leadership of our blessed parish and have consistently placed aside their will that His will may be accomplished. Thank you for a wonderful 4 years and may God grant us many more together! I remain, In His Service, Rev. Father Jon Boukis Proistamenos Attract, Serve, Illuminate Picture Directory This Fall, a picture directory will be published by the Parish. With so many new faces, it is important that each of us has a reference for all of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Each listing will include contact information and a 1.5 by 1.5 square picture. Please a picture that can be cropped to square for inclusion in the directory to priest@assumption.ky.goarch.org. If you don t have a picture, we have a volunteer that will take pictures in the church towards the end of the Summer.
