THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER, also called Holy Communion, is included this morning during worship. Everyone who puts faith and trust in Jesus Christ is welcome to share communion. PEOPLE ON THE WAY Howard Thurman (November 18, 1899-August 10, 1981) was a pastor, teacher, theologian, author and the spiritual advisor for many leaders of the civil-right movement. He was deeply committed to pacifism. He served as the Dean of Rankin Chapel of Howard University, founded the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples in San Francisco, the first multicultural, multiracial congregation in the United States, and then was called to serve as the Dean of Marsh Chapel at Boston University. He authored more than twenty books, including Jesus and the Disinherited, and Deep is the Hunger. THE ECUMENICAL PRAYER CYCLE focuses the prayers of Christians week by week, so that over the year all the countries of the world are prayed for. This week: Aotearoa/New Zealand, Australia. 3 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION KIDS WATER DAY TODAY Sunday, August 2 Children s Water Day at 11:15 a.m. Meet outside. o Activities for preschool and elementaryaged children. o Wear clothes that can get wet and bring a towel. o For safety reasons children must be accompanied by an adult. KIDS READ, Next Sunday, August 9 at 11:15 a.m. in the Library Kids of all ages are invited to explore the church library during the Kids Read. DCE Virginia Callegary will share a few of her favorite children s books. We ll read and play and find good books to help us make it through the long days of summer. OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE MOVEABLE FEAST MINISTRY needs home-baked or bakery-purchased desserts. Please bring your dessert donation every second Sunday of the month to the church kitchen before 12:30 p.m. Be sure to label them for Moveable Feast. SUMMER WORK TRIP TO WEST VIRGINIA Sunday, August 9-Sunday, August 15, 2015 First Pres is planning a summer work trip to Webster Springs, West Virginia. The trip is open to youth (14 with a parent going, 16 otherwise) and adults of all ages and abilities. The cost is around $200. Financial aid is available. August Personal Dignity Products As part of the Board of Deacons continuing campaign against hunger in Howard County, our featured donation for August is Personal Hygiene Products. Food Stamps do not cover cleaning and hygiene products so your donations will free up cash that people can use for food and other necessities. Recommended items: shampoo, deodorant, disposable razors, toothpaste, bar soap, detergent. 4 DEACON ANNUAL SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE: It s hard to think about Back to School already The Deacons are collecting school supplies for the Running Brook Elementary School and Prepare for Success through Sunday, August 16 th. Please bring your donations to the bins marked School Supplies in the Lower Commons. Pick up a flyer with the list of items at the Welcome Desk. Many thanks to those who have supported this ministry in the past. The need is even greater this year as our groups hope to supply over 5,000 kids in the county. Start looking for those sales!
