PEOPLE ON THE WAY Mother Teresa of Calcutta (August 26, 1910 September 7, 1997) was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia. At age 18 she entered the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish order of nuns who worked in India. She taught at St. Mary s High School in Calcutta from She then left the convent school to work among the poorest of the poor in the Calcutta slums. In 1950 she founded the Missionaries of Charity, whose primary task was to serve those persons nobody was prepared to look after. Her simple message was, the poor must know that we love them. The Missionaries have spread all over the world, caring for the poorest of the poor, refugees, orphans, the sick and dying, and undertaking disaster relief work. A master of the use of media, Mother Teresa proved to be a wise administrator and an enterprising entrepreneur. Mother Teresa won the Nobel Peace Prize in THE ECUMENICAL PRAYER CYCLE focuses the prayers of Christians week by week, so that over the year all the countries of the world are prayed for. This week we pray for Benin, Cote d Ivoire, Togo. Pray for: The produce that small farmers continue to grow amid environmental and other hardships; Those working to alleviate the poverty, illiteracy and hunger that so many in these countries still experience; Churches faithfully bringing the gospel to, and serving, all people with greater respect for how those of other faiths express their spirituality. For more information about the Prayer Cycle, visit the website of the World Council of Churches: OUR MISSION PARTNERSHIP PRAYER CYCLE FOR 2018 We pray for the mission we share as part of the PCUSA. The Office of the General Assembly (OGA), headed by the Stated Clerk, works to ensure that the Presbyterian Church maintains itself as a church. OGA carries out all the constitutional and ecumenical functions of our church such as Church Leadership Connection, Preparation for Ministry, and Ecumenical Ministries, and coordinates the work of the standing committees of the General Assembly, such as the Permanent Judicial Commission, the Committee on Representation, and the Advisory Committee on the Constitution. Our current Stated Clerk is The Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson II. He was elected at the 2016 General Assembly. As Stated Clerk his duties include interpreting assembly actions, representing the church on various denominational and ecumenical councils, witnessing on behalf of the church to social justice issues, and making statements as directed by an assembly.
3 WORSHIP, ART AND MUSIC NEWS MUSIC MINISTRY Rehearsals Are Beginning! Chancel Choir - Wednesday, September 5, at 7:00 p.m. Rehearsals will continue to meet on Thursday evenings, starting September 13 Handbell Choir Wednesday, September 12, at 7:30 p.m. For more info contact: Jimmy Galdieri, Director of Music Ministries THE ORDINARY TIME PARAMENTS in the sanctuary were designed and made by Debbie. Debbie, being a pastor s child, remembers discussing with her Dad that there was nothing ordinary about this time when the Apostles and Disciples of Christ tell about their new faith. The Communion Tablecloth is made of many green fabrics and has V lines which draw your eyes up to the cross. The quilting is of two trees in the center growing from a mustard seed. There is a boat on one corner to represent the Apostles as they spread the Good News. There is a shell on the opposite corner representing baptisms and living waters. The rest of the quilting is of scrolls and leaves. Across the bottom are the words: Anything But Ordinary. Debbie traced the hands of the First Presbyterian Church family and arranged them as the leaves for the tree on the banner. THE PITCHER AND CHALICE on the communion table are made of glass produced in the West Bank city of Hebron. This craft was established in Hebron by the Romans during their rule of Palestine in the 1 st century BCE and continues today. Glassmaking is a major industry for Palestinians living in Hebron. The olive wood Jerusalem Cross was made by Palestinian Christians in Bethlehem, which is located in the West Bank. Olive wood objects, especially crosses, crucifixes, candlesticks and nativity sets, are an important way for Palestinians to make a living in the West Bank.
