LITURGIST: Humaira (10:00) USHERS & GREETERS: Debbie (9:00); Debbie, Mispa (10:00); Laura (Tech Crew) ZENTANGLE ARTIST: Thanks to Ginny for the Zentangle art in this week s worship bulletin. FLOWERS THIS WEEK are given to the glory of God by members of the congregation who have offered flowers from their gardens. If you brought flowers and would like to have a Deacon deliver them to a homebound member please leave them on the table in the narthex. TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM, at the 10:00 a.m. service, for Daniel Mounyele and Noah Blaise, sons of Paul Blaise and Alice, and grandsons of Paul and Mispa WELCOME TO OUR GUEST MUSICIAN: Douglas Lawler has been accompanying singers in theatre for over thirty years. He has recently performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Olney Theatre, Toby s Dinner Theatre, and the Kennedy Center productions of Ragtime, Master Class, Follies, Side Show, and Gigi. As a music educator, he is currently a faculty member at the University of Maryland and the Community College of Baltimore County. Doug will be with us at both worship services today and August 5, as Jimmy Galdieri is on vacation. SENDING OUT: 2018 Churchwide Gathering of Presbyterian Women, Thursday- Sunday, August 2-5 in Louisville, Kentucky: Debbie and Caroline CHILDREN S WORSHIP: All worship begins in the Sanctuary. At 10:00 a.m.: After the Children s Prayer and Lord s Prayer: Children ages 4-7 may go with Ms. Kathy Moore to Godly Play. Parents can pick up their children following worship in rooms 110 & 113. WORSHIP BAGS: Worship bags are available to enhance the worship experience for children. Please return everything to the bags and return the bags to the ushers at the end of the service. THE PITCHER AND CHALICE on the communion table are made of glass produced in the West Bank city of Hebron. This craft was established in Hebron by the Romans during their rule of Palestine in the 1 st century BCE and continues today. Glassmaking is a major industry for Palestinians living in Hebron. The olive wood Jerusalem Cross was made by Palestinian Christians in Bethlehem, which is located in the West Bank. Olive wood objects, especially crosses, crucifixes, candlesticks and nativity sets, are an important way for Palestinians to make a living in the West Bank.

PEOPLE ON THE WAY Eugene Carson Blake (November 7, 1906 July 31, 1985) was a Presbyterian minister whose service to the church called Christians to work with each other against oppression and injustice and for greater opportunity for those is need. He served as Stated Clerk of the General Assembly in the 1950s, and was a leading voice for ecumenical cooperation and church union. In the 1960s he served as president of the National Council of Churches, bringing his predominately white constituency into active participation in the US Civil Rights movement. On the Fourth of July 1963, Blake was one of nine religious leaders arrested near Baltimore, Maryland, as they demonstrated for the racial desegregation of an amusement park. The following month, he represented the NCCCUSA in the leadership and on the podium of the historic March on Washington. Blake had also been active in the World Council of Churches since its founding in 1948, and in 1966 he was elected to succeed the council s founder W.A. Visser t Hooft as General Secretary. During Blake s term, he brought together world leaders to found the WCC Programme to Combat Racism. In retirement, Blake was active with Bread for the World. THE ECUMENICAL PRAYER CYCLE focuses the prayers of Christians week by week, so that over the year all the countries of the world are prayed for. This week we pray for Republic of Congo, Gabon, Sao tome and Principe Pray for: Healing from exploitative practices that began under colonial rule; Democratic fair elections and political stability in this region; Economic development that benefits all the people, especially those living in poverty. For more information about the Prayer Cycle, visit the website of the World Council of Churches: OUR MISSION PARTNERSHIP PRAYER CYCLE FOR 2018 We pray for the mission of our congregation. Boca Costa Presbytery Mission Partnership: Iglesia Montesion (Mount Zion Church) in the city of Santo Tomas. UKirk/Campus Ministries of the PCUSA: UKirk is the network of all those who lead, support and advocate for collegiate and higher education ministries of the PCUSA. The Rev. Holly Ulmer is the Chaplain at the University of Maryland United Campus Ministries, one of the expressions of UKirk.
3 WORSHIP, ART AND MUSIC NEWS THE ORDINARY TIME PARAMENTS in the sanctuary were designed and made by Debbie. Debbie, being a pastor s child, remembers discussing with her Dad that there was nothing ordinary about this time when the Apostles and Disciples of Christ tell about their new faith. The Communion Tablecloth is made of many green fabrics and has V lines which draw your eyes up to the cross. The quilting is of two trees in the center growing from a mustard seed. There is a boat on one corner to represent the Apostles as they spread the Good News. There is a shell on the opposite corner representing baptisms and living waters. The rest of the quilting is of scrolls and leaves. Across the bottom are the words: Anything But Ordinary. Debbie traced the hands of the First Presbyterian Church family and arranged them as the leaves for the tree on the banner. SUMMER AFTER CHURCH On Sundays during the summer there s something fun happening After-Church at around 11:15 a.m. The activities last about an hour. We ve planned lots of different kinds of activities, so there is something for everyone. So Grab some lemonade, and gather in the Parlor for conversation. This Week: July 29 Travel Anyone? Many people have been asking Pastor Sue to lead a trip. Sue will talk about what s involved, how much such a trip might cost, and what we might do and see in each of these places. We ll see what kind of interest there is for a trip and where people might like to go first! August 26 Mission Work in the Philippines With our guests, Dessa and Cobbie Palm, and Young Adult Volunteer Emma Warman CHRISTIAN EDUCATION THANK YOU to all of our amazing volunteers that made VBS such an amazing success! The week doesn't run without you. With over 25 volunteers and teen helpers, and 80 kids, the week was a hit with everyone involved. CHILDREN S WATER DAY Sunday, August 19 at 11:15 a.m. Meet outside under the trees on the front lawn. o Activities for preschool and elementary-aged children. o Wear clothes that can get wet and bring a towel. For safety reasons children must be accompanied by an adult. ATTENTION FAMILIES TAKE OUT CHURCH RETURNS! We try to remember that God goes with us wherever we go but sometimes that isn t so easy. Pick up a Take Out Church box from the Welcome Center before your vacation to help you stay connected with God and your church while you are away. The box contains activities, devotions, music, prayers, and coloring pages. There are also folders available for adults to try Take Out Church.
