Mike is a former Associate Pastor of First Presbyterian Church. He and his wife both have cancer. WORSHIP NOTES: During Lent, we are singing a Kyrie as part of our time of confession. Kyrie eleison is a Greek phrase which means Lord, have mercy. It is one of the oldest prayers of the Christian community, and is prayed as both confession and thanksgiving celebrating what God has done, what God is doing, and what God will continue to do. This prayer is sung or said in Greek today in many churches for which Greek is not their first language particularly in the Coptic (Egyptian) Church. We are singing the Kyrie this season to join the stream of Christians who have prayed this prayer from the first century, and in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in the Coptic Church. The setting of the Kyrie we are singing is from Ghana by way of Nigeria! Dinah Reindorf, a Nigerian musician, composed it while participating in a World Council of Churches consultation on music in Ghana. BLOOD PRESSURE TESTING TODAY: Stay healthy and come have your blood pressure tested by Olu Oshinnaiye in the library at 11:15 a.m. Volunteers are needed on the 2 nd and 4 th Sundays, please sign up in the Lower Commons or contact discipleship@firstpreshc.org. If you have any questions please contact Olu Oshinnaiye, discipleship@firstpreshc.org

Du Bois (February 23, 1868-August 27, 1963) was an American civil rights activist, leader, Pan-Africanist, sociologist, educator, historian, writer, editor, poet, and scholar. He was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts a town largely made up of European Americans; there Du Bois freely attended school with white children. When it came time for college, the town raised funds to send him to Fisk University in Tennessee. It was at Fisk that Du Bois encountered institutional racism for the first time. Jim Crow laws were strictly enforced: blacks could not use the same drinking fountains, restrooms, restaurants, banks, or schools as white people. While he was studying abroad in Berlin, and talking with prominent social scientists, Du Bois decided to write about racism and the African-American experience. His most well-known book is The Souls of Black Folk (1903). In 1905, Du Bois met with 30 other African-American scholars, artists, and activists in Canada, near Niagara Falls, to discuss the challenges that people of color faced. The men had to meet in Canada, because blacks were not allowed rooms at white-run U.S. hotels. From this Niagara Movement sprang the formation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (1909), which still exists today to fight racism and bridge cultural divides. Du Bois was the first African-American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University. He became a naturalized citizen of Ghana at the age of 95, where he died in 1963, exactly one day before Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his epochal I Have A Dream speech at the March on Washington. We also remember: On February 29, 1968 President Lyndon Johnson appointed the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, to search for the roots of riding violence in the United States as it surfaced in the growing hostility between whites and African-Americans. The Commission s report named such factors as unemployment, education, housing and poverty, but the root cause identified was the insidious and pervasive white sense of the inferiority of black [people.] OUR MISSION PARTNERSHIP PRAYER CYCLE FOR 2016 We pray for the mission of our congregation. The Cuba Partnership between Baltimore and El Centro Presbytery, Cuba is a mission of accompaniment. It was formalized in In 2011, our congregation established a partnership with the church in Calabazar de Sagua, Cuba. Bridges to Housing Stability is one of our primary local mission partners. Bridges mission is to prevent homelessness by providing effective services and compelling advocacy that result in housing stability for Howard County households.
