Cathedral Community Sunday Morning Breakfast There is to be a breakfast following the 8am Eucharist service on Sunday 4 November. We welcome members of the congregation from the 8am service and those arriving early for the 10.30am service when there is an opportunity to meet and chat over breakfast. This is the last breakfast of 2018 and a new schedule of dates for 2019 will be issued in the New Year. Sponsors for the breakfasts are always welcome and if anyone would like to sponsor a breakfast please contact David or Marilyn Brooks ( ). Could you be a sides person or help with the sound system? We are urgently seeking some additional volunteers to act as sides people giving out service sheets and generally welcoming people to services and events. Could you possibly help out occasionally? It need not be an onerous role and you could control how frequently you offered assistance. We see this as a vital role in terms of supporting the cathedral community. A training event is due to take place on Saturday 17 November between 10am-12noon in the old song school but if you can t make that date then please do not let it put you off volunteering. We also desperately need volunteers to help run the sound system during events and services. Training is offered to learn how to work the system, which I am reliably told is not difficult to do. If you would like to discuss volunteering for either of these roles, please speak to Amanda Fitchett or David Dewdney, both of whom can be contacted via the Cathedral office. The Head Warden Flowers Arrangers The Flower Arrangers play a huge role in making the church beautiful for worship and welcoming to visitors. Like music, beauty and a sense of the divine presence often go together. If you would like to find out more, please contact Madeleine Loftus via maddyloftus212@outlook.com The Act of Remembrance will be marked by the Flower Arrangers with a simple but beautiful display. We invite members of the congregation to help us with a small donation of 5, so we may make this a very special occasion. If you would like to do so please place it in an envelope clearly marked Flower Fund and hand in to the Cathedral office or to a Sides-person. Your gift would be greatly appreciated. Madeleine Loftus Chairman, Flower Arrangers 5

Coffee Rota Tea and Coffee is an important feature to our Sunday worship. Many of us appreciate the time to catch up with one another, to have purposeful conversations and to talk about God. It is also important to making new people feel welcome and included in our community. Can you help volunteer? Do you think you could help serve refreshments on Sundays after services? You will be supported by a good team and you will be trained responsibly in what you should be doing. Please prayerfully consider if you can help us, see Nathan Morley nathanmorley8218@googl .com for more details. November Day time Retreat: Christ the King Beaumont Leys Saturday 24 November 9.45am 4.15pm We are also putting together a Day Time Retreat at Christ the King Church in Beaumont Leys. This will be a free event open to all the community and we hope to cater for spiritual needs of this community. Revd Clive Watts has agreed to take this day on to lead and will be assisted by the community committee putting this day together. The day will feature a bring and share lunch and will also offer a Eucharist. Please Nathan Morley (nathanmorley8218@googl .com ) with confirmation of your attendance; you can also call the Cathedral Office to confirm you re attendance Programme We have started work to provide a program of activities and events for our 2019 diary. We have already floated ideas such as a return of the Quiz night, a games evening and a treasure hunt themed day for family and friends. We are interested in collaborating with members of our community to add to our events planning for the New Year. If you have ideas for events and/or can possibly help with event volunteering then please send me Nathan an and we will be happy to take these to the community meetings. We would like to involve more of you in our planning for the future. Cathedral Community Craft Circle Please join us every Thursday, from 2.00pm 4.00pm, for Cathedral Community Craft Circle in the White Rose Café, St Martins House. This is a social and informal gathering where you can bring along your knitting, crocheting, or any alternative art materials that you are working on. All welcome! Your Belongings Please keep an eye on your belongings during your visit to the Cathedral. Cathedral Mothers Union The next Cathedral Mothers Union meeting will be 6 held on Tuesday 6 November at 2pm in the Cathedral.

Cathedral & Diocesan Notices Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Canon Chancellor at Leicester Cathedral The Bishop of Leicester is pleased to announce the appointment of the Revd Canon Paul Rattigan, Canon for Discipleship at Liverpool Cathedral, to the combined role of Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Canon Chancellor at Leicester Cathedral. The date of Paul s installation will be announced in due course. Bishop of Loughborough, the Rt Revd Guli Francis-Dehqani whose role includes that of Sponsoring Bishop, overseeing and supporting the vocations of those called to ordained ministry also welcomed Paul s appointment. Bishop Guli said: I m very excited about working with Paul who combines a real love for Cathedral ministry with a passion for vocations. He will be a great asset to the team here in Leicester and we re looking forward to welcoming him. The Very Revd Dean of Leicester, David Monteith, said: A third of Paul s time will be spent on cathedral educational work. He will bring much experience in this area. As we welcome Paul, we pray he will thrive and help us become more of a beating heart for city and county. Paul, who is married to Anne and has a daughter who lives with her family in Nottingham, has himself spoken of his connections to the Midlands and his commitment to both cathedrals and vocation. He said: Vocations and discipleship have long been a passion of mine. Cathedrals are a more recent love but no less important in my calling to this new role. I grew up in the Midlands and then went to university where I studied various subjects before moving to Liverpool to teach Maths and Psychology. It was here that my call to ordained ministry crystallised and I was ordained in 1995 at Liverpool Cathedral. Since then I have served in various parishes from inner city to suburbia in both Birmingham and Liverpool. I was delighted to return to Liverpool five years ago to become Canon for Discipleship but surprised to find myself at the cathedral which is not my background at all. Since then cathedrals have gotten under my skin and I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to focus on discipleship. Having been involved in careers guidance before ordination, I quickly became part of the vocations team during my curacy and have continued this for over 20 years. Firstly becoming Examining Chaplain, then Diocesan Vocations Adviser and currently a BAP adviser as well as working closely with St Mellitus North West. 7

Therefore, when I saw this post where I could more fully serve within the vocations field as well as keeping my love of cathedrals and discipleship going I felt a definite call to this post. There are changes currently going on within the discernment and training for ordained ministry and new ones for the future. I am looking forward to being part of a newly formed team, walking with people, as together we discern what God is doing in their lives. I will be sad to leave Liverpool and our friends but my overarching impression of Leicester, and the people I met during the interview process, was how hospitable everyone was. I am very excited about getting to know new friends and a new area. Cathedral Experience Placement We welcome the Revd Canon Andrew Dodd who will be with us from 29 October- 9 November. Andrew has been Rector of Grimsby Minster since 2011 and he is also the Area Dean of North East Lincolnshire. He will be shadowing the Dean and other colleagues to learn more about the opportunities and challenges of Cathedral Ministry. Please welcome him into our midst. Wedding Tim and Motje Thank you very much for your thoughts and prayers in the run up to our wedding and afterwards. We had an amazing day that we will remember forever. The music was fantastic, Johannes' sermon was discussed until late at night and all our guests were very impressed with the Service. We watched everybody going in from the Precentor's house and felt blessed by every person walking through the door to be with us at our special day. Thank you! Worship, Witness and Welcome Sunday 30 September Sunday 4 November 2018 We recently launched our renewal of giving appeal which will run throughout the month of October and results announced and blessed on Sunday 4 November. Please do pick up either a named envelope on your way out of the cathedral today. There will be some blank envelopes for those that may not be on the electoral or community roll or other cathedral group. Please ask the cathedral office for an electoral or community roll form if you would like to join either of these. Thank you. The Dean Service of Collation and Installation The Bishop of Leicester and the Dean and Chapter of Leicester Cathedral warmly invite you to attend the service of installation of The Revd Canon Richard Worsfold as Archdeacon of Leicester on Sunday 4 November 2018 at 3pm in the 8

Leicester Cathedral Revealed Project Director s update As the HLF submission deadline of 4 December draws nearer we re busy completing various important bits of work required for that. A really crucial one is the Cathedral s Business Plan, which will cover the period from next year, when work is due to start, through to the three years past reopening with a look beyond that too. Alongside making sure the capital works can take place, it clearly needs to include provision for the new ways of operating that will be needed once we fully reopen, assumptions about visitor numbers and income lines. Beyond all that, it is written to make it clear our core purpose is and will remain being place of worship, witness and welcome. The current draft was reviewed by Chapter on Friday 5 October, with the intention of final sign-off next month. Another important piece of work is around how we review all this activity as it s no use setting out to do something and not asking yourself at the end how you got on. Or indeed along the way how it s going. So we have Oakmere consultants helping us develop our Evaluation framework. On 2 October we held an evening called The Accidental Philanthropist for 120 potential friends from further afield. In the course of the evening we gave a voice to three of our Chapels St Katharine, St George and Christ the King - each speaking of the people memorialised in there, ordinary people who in their time made extraordinary contributions. You can find the scripts for this on-line on the Revealed section of our website. Pete Hobson 4 October pete.hobson@leccofe.org 12
