Cathedral Music Advent Meditations Lunchtime concerts at 1pm in the Cathedral with poetry, readings and organ music starting on Monday 3 December; Monday 10 December and Monday 17 December, all are welcome. Hush, Little Child a new Christmas Carol CD A new release on the Heritage label, this CD features carols by Antony Baldwin and Simon Mold, one of our current Leicester Cathedral Songmen, performed by the Choirs of Southwell Minster. Simon has some advance copies available for any whose minds might just be turning to the question of Christmas presents! The 16 carols (plus a fun organ piece) are in a variety of styles and moods, ranging from robust rejoicings to gentle lullabies, but with an overall emphasis on tunefulness and "listenability". Included are, for instance, Tony's spine-tingling Dormi Jesu and his masterly arrangement of a catchy folk-carol from Devon, The Angel Gabriel from God; and Simon's tender Children at the Manger, which has been heard in recent years at Leicester Cathedral carol services, along with his well-known Candlelight Carol that has featured on Classic FM and Lesley's Garrett's television series Christmas Voices. If you're interested do catch or get in touch with Simon via at spmold@blueyonder.co.uk who will be delighted to provide anyone with CDs at the amazingly competitive pre-amazon price of 10 each. Cathedral Flower Arrangers Flower Arrangers The Flower Arrangers play a huge role in making the church beautiful for worship and welcoming to visitors. Like music, beauty and a sense of the divine presence often go together. If you would like to find out more, please contact Madeleine Loftus via maddyloftus212@outlook.com Chairman, Flower Arrangers Cathedral Community Eco Church The Cathedral is an Eco Church. As our way of trying to cut down on paper, Chalk would like to invite you to share your Christmas greetings to the whole community by signing their giant Christmas Card. If you would like to donate some of the money 5

you save to the Children s Society that would be even better and arrangements to do so can be made by contacting Marilyn Brooks via at: sencompb@gmail.com Messy Christingle The Annual Christingle service is on Saturday 15 December this year at 4pm and will be preceded by Messy Cathedral 3pm -4pm during which time children will be invited to help make Christingles for the service with some other Christmas activities on offer too. There will be light refreshments following the service. If you are able to help with any aspect of this, please Andy Heafford at andy.heafford@leccofe.org Offers of help would be appreciated from 2pm onwards. Thank you. Could you be a sidesperson or help with the sound system? We are urgently seeking some additional volunteers to act as sidespeople giving out service sheets and generally welcoming people to services and events. Could you possibly help out occasionally? It need not be an onerous role and you could control how frequently you offered assistance. We see this as a vital role in terms of supporting the cathedral community. We also desperately need volunteers to help run the sound system during events and services. Training is offered to learn how to work the system, which I am reliably told is not difficult to do. If you would like to discuss volunteering for either of these roles, please speak to Amanda Fitchett or David Dewdney, both of whom can be contacted via the Cathedral office. Head Warden Children s Society Boxes If you have one of the above boxes it is now time for them to be collected in and the money counted. If I am not around please hand them in to the vergers. If you need your box collected let me know. Thanks. Anne Dewdney Coffee Rota Tea and Coffee is an important feature to our Sunday worship. Many of us appreciate the time to catch up with one another, to have purposeful conversations and to talk about God. It is also important to making new people feel welcome and included in our community. Can you help volunteer? Do you think you could help serve refreshments on Sundays after services? You will be supported by a good team and you will be trained responsibly in what you should be doing. Please prayerfully consider if you can help us, see Nathan Morley nathanmorley8218@googl .com for more details. 6

2019 Programme We have started work to provide a program of activities and events for our 2019 diary. We have already floated ideas such as a return of the Quiz night, a games evening and a treasure hunt themed day for family and friends. We are interested in collaborating with members of our community to add to our events planning for the New Year. If you have ideas for events and/or can possibly help with event volunteering then please send me Nathan an and we will be happy to take these to the community meetings. We would like to involve more of you in our planning for the future. Cathedral Community Craft Circle Please join us every Thursday, from 2.00pm 4.00pm, for Cathedral Community Craft Circle in the White Rose Café, St Martins House. This is a social and informal gathering where you can bring along your knitting, crocheting, or any alternative art materials that you are working on. All welcome! Your Belongings Please keep an eye on your belongings during your visit to the Cathedral. Cathedral Mothers Union The next Cathedral Mothers Union meeting will be held on Tuesday 4 December at 11.30am in the Bishops Room. Cathedral & Diocesan Notices Canon Mads Morgan died on Tuesday 20 November at home with her husband Stu and their beloved dog. Please remember her and all her family at this time along with the entire Diocesan community with whom she has been working. Mads has been part of the Mission and Ministry team working to support young people and youth workers, then acting as a Pioneer Development Worker and latterly leading on our work to deepen the discipleship of the entire people of God. She has faced her illness with profound fortitude and deep faith and trust in God s eternal goodness towards her and all people. We will miss her greatly. May she rest in peace and rise in glory! A memorial service will take place here on Friday 7 December at 3.30pm. The Dean Witness, Welcome and Worship Thank you for all those who responded in any kind of way to our annual appeal for generous giving. As a result our pledged giving has increased by Thank you and thank God! The Dean 7

Heritage Lottery Fund Thanks To You Without National Lottery players, the 7.9billion of funding awarded to more than 43,000 heritage projects since 1994, would not be possible. Here at Leicester Cathedral we have benefitted greatly from this public funding, which supported the reinterment of King Richard III and related activity with a grant of 94,500 and the current Leicester Cathedral Revealed project with a development grant of 330,000 towards a potential grant of 3.3m. We are delighted to announce that this year we will be taking part in the Heritage Lottery Fund s #ThanksToYou! Bring along your National Lottery ticket or scratch card between the dates of 3-8 December for a free guided tour of our historic site. King Richard III tours (30 minutes) daily at 11:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:00 (these tours are offered Monday Saturday only), with full Cathedral tours (60 minutes) are available on request. Please note that tours are subject to availability and that the Cathedral will be closed for a special service on Tuesday 4 December and so tours will not be available that day. Home Start Home Start Horizons are in urgent needs of volunteers who have parenting experience and can spare 2-3 hours per week of their time to support a local family. Volunteers will be given training. If you are interested please contact them via at: info@homestarthorizons.org.uk or by ringing their office on UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women Mothers Union 16 days of Activism against Gender based Violence Most gender based violence is perpetrated against women and girls as a result of unequal distribution of power in society and the way women/girls are viewed in cultures and societies, although males may also be subjected to physical and verbal attacks, both socially and within a family. It is a violation of Human Rights as well as a Public Health issue. Violence is described as the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual against oneself or others. It can result in physical and psychological harm, poor development or deprivation and can have lifelong consequences for physical and mental health as well as social development. (WHO 2002). There have been many reports of physical, sexual, psychological and domestic violence in the national press recently and this is also a global issue. The United Nations identified 25 November as an International Day in order to raise awareness of the fact that women around the world are subjected to all forms of violence and to highlight that the true scale of this is often hidden. In line with the global reach of the Mothers Union members take part in 16 Days of Activism against gender based violence, where a different prayer is said each day between 16 November and 10 December. Your prayers will help the victims and those trying to help, to alleviate the awful consequences of gender based violence. Linda Green, Safeguarding Co-ordinator and member of MU 8

Milk for Christmas Christmas is a time when demand at food banks increases and we always try to support them to meet that extra need with a special appeal. This year we asked the food bank what they would like for Christmas and their answer was - MILK. They cannot meet the current demand and Christmas will be extra busy. They want boxes of UHT milk. On Sundays 2 and 9 December could you bring in any donations to the Cathedral and place in the box by the door. Or during the week, please give to the welcomers or verger on duty. Donations of tinned meat, tinned fish, tinned vegetables, tinned sweetcorn, nappies, female sanitary products, tea and coffee would also be very welcome. Ann Reddecliffe Stable Family For the last 30 years a friend and I have both decided to read or study the same advent book. Some have been better experiences than others but every year we have commented how powerful it has been to know that someone else is reading the same text and praying the same prayer as you. We have had some good conversations as well. For the next 4 weeks you are being invited to consider different aspects of family by using the study sheet included in the news sheet. Each week the study sheet consist of a different picture, bible passage and reflection most of which are taken from the material Revd Clive Watts prepared for the community retreat day. I urge you to have 5 or 10 minutes peace out of the business of Christmas to ponder, as Mary did, on the Christ child and the meaning of his birth for you and me today. I will welcome feedback. Diana Belton, Pastoral Assistant Safeguarding Ensuring that we are all safe, and, in particular the most vulnerable amongst us adults and children is a responsibility which I hope we all take very seriously. A wide range of people worship, visit and work here; and our collective community is quite large and diverse. The well-being of all of these people including yourself is important to us. Good safeguarding procedures and policies ensure that, where there are concerns perhaps about an individual or perhaps about how we do things these may be safely raised and professionally addressed, with the people concerned well-supported. 9

The Church of England commissioned an independent audit of Diocesan arrangements for keeping people safe from harm and abuse (which took place in this Diocese last year) and has now extended it to all Cathedrals. We shall be one of the first Cathedrals to be audited and this will take place from January 29 th to 31 st. As part of this audit, in addition to looking at files, policies, training etc. they will meet with key individuals. They are keen, too, to hear from congregation and community members, staff, volunteers and parents, to hear about their understanding of keeping people safe in the cathedral, and to get their unique perspective on how this operates. We shall be looking, therefore, to convene some focus groups. If you would like to be included in one of these please contact Elisa Simmons in the Cathedral office. More details on all of this will follow. If you have any concerns that somebody is or might be at risk of harm, or you have been impacted by abuse and want to talk to somebody about it, please contact one of the safeguarding co-ordinators or independent persons or a member of the clergy team, as appropriate. Alison Adams Leicester Cathedral Revealed Project Director s update This week (beginning 2 December) sees us mounting a further Public Consultation on the revised proposals for the new Heritage Learning Centre that have emerged from the redesign exercise carried out in the last couple of months. This will be located in the north transept, where the regular LCR exhibition stands are, and will be here until next Sunday 9 December. Do take a look in the week or on Sunday and do fill in a response card telling us what you think! Meanwhile Chapter meets this Tuesday 4 December to agree the Round Two application to the Heritage Lottery Fund which can lead to a final decision in March 2019 and a hoped for start on site later next year.
