Admission of Choristers Today we invest formally invest Arwen Dawson, Rachel Flores, Rahul George, Charles Lawrence, Arthur Lewis and Rafi Sirur in their surplices and thereby admitting them to full membership of the choir. They all joined the choir after Easter last year and have settled in well to the routine of being Cathedral Choristers. Congratulations and welcome, not only to the Choristers, but also to their families. We hope very much that you will enjoy your time in Leicester Cathedral Choir. Two Junior Girl Choristers who started singing in the choir in September will be admitted later in the year and we look forward to some new Choristers joining both the Boys and Junior Girls Choirs this term. Choir Open Afternoon This year s Choir Open Afternoon takes place on Sunday 9 March 2019 starting at 1pm. Boys and girls aged seven to ten interested in joining the Cathedral Choirs and their parents/carers are invited to come along and find out what being in the Cathedral Choir is like. They will have the opportunity to meet current Choristers and their parents, watch a mock audition and take part in a rehearsal with the Choristers and Songmen before singing Evensong at 3.00pm. The best possible advertisement for the Cathedral Choirs is word-of-mouth, so please do encourage people you know with children at primary school who enjoy singing to get in touch with me on or or by to chris.ouvryjohns@leccofe.org to book their place. Sabbatical for Isaac Congratulations to senior boy chorister Isaac, who has successfully auditioned for a part in a musical in London s West End. Sadly for us that means that he ll have to take a sabbatical from the cathedral choir until the autumn term, by which time he ll be 14, so quite possibly not singing treble anymore! We wish him well for the coming months and look forward to welcoming him back to the choir seeing him on those weekends when he s back in Leicester. Midlands Four Choirs Festival in Leicester On Saturday, 9 February, the boys and songmen will join the choirs of Southwell Minster and Coventry and Derby Cathedrals for the annual Midlands Four Choirs Festival. Evensong is at 5.30pm and will include Stanford s anthem (new to our repertoire) For lo, I raise up. The canticles are Collegium Regale by Howells and the introit is Tallis s setting of O nata lux. 6

Cathedral Flower Arrangers Flower Arrangers The Flower Arrangers play a huge role in making the church beautiful for worship and welcoming to visitors. Like music, beauty and a sense of the divine presence often go together. If you would like to find out more, please contact Madeleine Loftus via maddyloftus212@outlook.com Chairman, Flower Arrangers Cathedral Community Family Games Evening Are you feeling a little flat after a busy December why not come along to our Games Evening on Saturday 26 January in the Cathedral. The evening will start at 7pm and finish around 9pm. There will be some new games as well as some old favourites, if you have a favourite game, please bring it along and share with others. A bring and share supper will be served. No ticket is required just come along with some food to share with others, and your favourite family game. Coffee, tea and soft drinks will be available. No charge but donations are welcome. Nathan Morley Could you be a sidesperson or help with the sound system? We are urgently seeking some additional volunteers to act as sidespeople giving out service sheets and generally welcoming people to services and events. Could you possibly help out occasionally? It need not be an onerous role and you could control how frequently you offered assistance. We see this as a vital role in terms of supporting the cathedral community. We also desperately need volunteers to help run the sound system during events and services. Training is offered to learn how to work the system, which I am reliably told is not difficult to do. If you would like to discuss volunteering for either of these roles, please speak to Amanda Fitchett or David Dewdney, both of whom can be contacted via the Cathedral office. Head Warden Coffee Rota Tea and Coffee is an important feature to our Sunday worship. Many of us appreciate the time to catch up with one another, to have purposeful conversations and to talk about God. It is also important to making new people feel welcome and included in our community. Can you help volunteer? 7

Do you think you could help serve refreshments on Sundays after services? You will be supported by a good team and you will be trained responsibly in what you should be doing. Please prayerfully consider if you can help us, see Nathan Morley nathanmorley82@hotmail.com for more details. Cathedral Community Craft Circle Please join us every Thursday, from 2.00pm 4.00pm, for Cathedral Community Craft Circle in the White Rose Café, St Martins House. This is a social and informal gathering where you can bring along your knitting, crocheting, or any alternative art materials that you are working on. All welcome! Your Belongings Please keep an eye on your belongings during your visit to the Cathedral. Cathedral Mothers Union The next Cathedral Mothers Union meeting will be held on Tuesday 5 February at 2pm in the Cathedral. Cathedral & Diocesan Notices Baptism, Confirmation and Admission to Communion As last year Baptisms, Confirmations and Admissions to Communion will happen during the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday 20 April at 6pm. Admission to Communion can happen for children aged 7 or above who are baptised but not yet confirmed, and confirmation usually happens from Secondary School age onwards. If you are interested or do not quite know whether this is for you, please have a conversation with me or one of the other clergy. Canon Johannes johannes.arens@leccofe.org New Canon Chancellor Arriving Paul Rattigan and his wife move into their new home this week. Paul's licensing installation takes place on Saturday 2 February at 3pm. Please make this a priority in your diaries. Paul will be 'handed over to us' with a crowd of supporters from Liverpool Cathedral so it will be very good to signal our strong Leicester welcome. 8

To that end also, we'd like to present Paul and Anne a 'welcome hamper' at that service of nice store cupboard goods (things like pasta, rice, olive oil, vinegar, ground coffee, nice biscuits etc.) Can you bring something in and we'll gather these for the next few Sundays? Anne Dewdney is co-ordinating this task. Thank you The Dean Pastoral Care The next meeting of the pastoral care team will be held on Wednesday 16 January If you are a member of the pastoral team and have not attended the earlier meeting please do sign up for this one. It is really important we meet together occasionally to build up good pastoral practice and touch base over issues. If you are interested in joining the pastoral care team, then you would be welcome to come along. In the first instance please Alison at Alison.adams@leccofe.org Safeguarding The safeguarding audit is at the end of this month! Many thanks to those who have agreed to be part of focus groups talking to the auditors this is a great help. We still need members of our congregations for this activity: you do not have to be a member of the pastoral team or anything- the auditors just want to get the perspective from the shop floor. Please see me if you can help with this that particular group will be meeting on 30 January at midday. Thank you. The Sub-Dean New Street Car Parking Please note the new charging arrangements. Evenings from 6pm will be charged at 3 for first 3 hours. All day Saturday and Sunday will also be charged at 3 for first 3 hours as availability allows. There will be a car registration system in operation. Parking is subject to space being available and all vehicles are left at the owner s risk. The gates will be locked at 6pm each day. Access to the car park will be via Friar Lane. Volunteer Dinner Wednesday 30 January 2019 The Cathedral Volunteer Dinner takes place in the Grand Hall, St Martin s House at 6.30pm on Wednesday 30 January All Cathedral volunteers should have received an invite either through the post or via (Greenvelope). Those who haven t yet responded should do so by Wednesday 16 January. If there are any volunteers who haven t received an invite and would like to come, do contact Rebecca Hale on Rebecca.Hale@Leccofe.org or

80 for 80 Volunteer Drive We Need Your Help The Royal Voluntary Service, previously known as the Women s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS), was set up in 1938 to inspire and enable ordinary people to give the gift of voluntary service to address the needs of the day in their communities. Today we offer services throughout Leicester, supporting older people to help reduce loneliness and isolation. We are asking for people to come forward to volunteer to support in their local community. Our volunteers do the simple things which can make a difference: Chatting to and supporting older people at home; Helping older people access support and services in their community; Simple, everyday practical tasks in the home; Transport older people to appointments, shopping or social gatherings; Running groups or social activities in the local community For further information please contact the local Volunteer Coordinator for West Leicester City, Ed Lyons, by ing edward.lyons@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk or by phone Leicester Cathedral Revealed Project Director s update As we start a new year, I m aware enquiries continue to come from a number of directions about how the project will or may affect the availability of the cathedral over the next 12 months and beyond. The project is, of course, dependent on a number of key decisions from Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for major funding, and both The Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England (CFCE) and the local planning committee for permissions to build. Assuming all goes well these will have been successfully determined by the end of March, so all that follows is dependent on that happening. On present plans, the work will be split into two major phases, with a further completion phase after reopening Phase One will involve the demolition of the old song school, the archaeological investigation of the ground beneath and the construction of the new Heritage Learning Centre. 10

During this phase the main body of the cathedral will remain open, apart from the far end of the Great South Aisle and (for at least some of the time) St Dunstan s Chapel. The current old song school, clergy vestry, toilets and sacristy will also not be in use in this phase. We do not expect this to start much before the end of 2019 and it could take as much as 15 months to complete, depending on the complexity of the archaeology, so until the end of April Phase Two will see the closure of the main cathedral for all the works to be done in there, but the opening for use of the new HLC, with all its spaces. Entry will be via its doorway into Cathedral Gardens. And it will be possible to go through into the eastern parts of the cathedral via St Dunstan s. The ambulatory, CCK and St Katharine s will all remain open throughout both phases of work. This work will begin as Phase One completes, and is likely to take a further 12 months so perhaps continuing until the end of April 2022, when the main cathedral can re-open. Phase Three will involve a rolling programme of completing re-decoration throughout the historic cathedral, including the east end spaces, which will therefore each in turn be temporarily out of use. This might take up to the end of If Phase One goes well all (archaeology simple and straightforward) then of course all of the later timings can be expected to be brought forwards. Pete Hobson 10 January pete.hobson@leccofe.org Domestic notices Safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults Leicester Cathedral is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults.
