He depicts her standing beside the slumbering Adam, almost arguing with God. Perhaps it represents the eternal discussion about the relationship of man and woman. Or perhaps it recalls the perpetual scene of a man asleep on the couch while the woman wonders, Whatʼs wrong with him? The good thing is that Eve asks the only one who has the answer: God himself. In fact, Jesus does the same thing in Markʼs Gospel. When the Pharisees question him on divorce, Jesus refers them to Godʼs original plan, But from the beginning of creation (10:6). Jesus finds the answer to this challenging question by looking back at Godʼs creative plan for humanity. God has given man and woman to one another as a mutual gift. It is not good that man should be alone, but only God in eternity definitively satisfies the original loneliness found in everyoneʼs heart. When spousal love breaks down, we would be wise to follow Jesusʼ advice and refer to Godʼs original plan. Saint John Paul II did that when, in contemplating married love, he dedicated the first years of his Wednesday audiences to reflect on the first three chapters of Genesis. Those God has placed alongside us, especially our spouses, are meant to wonderfully (but only partially) satisfy that deep longing to be totally accompanied. 4 October 7, 2018 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Genesis 2:18-24 Psalm 128 Hebrews 2:9-11 Mark 10:2-16 or 10:2-12 Introduction to the Liturgy of the Word: Twice in today s readings we hear, in reference to those who are married, the two become one flesh. Significantly, we hear these words first in Genesis, where the first person becomes a co-creator, naming all the animals and even providing a rib so that God could create a partner. In becoming one flesh, two people create a new and unique entity. Let us reflect on how we have or can become co-creators, creating bonds and creating life from the impulse of love. Question of the Week: In what ways are relationships in my life similar to the love of God for humanity? Do some relationships fail to mirror that love God has for us? Es significativo que escuchemos esta frase primeramente en el libro del Génesis, donde a primera persona se convierte en co-creador, pues le asigna un nombre a los animals y hasta da sus costillas para que Dios cree a su compañera. Cuando dos personas se convierten en una sola carne crean una entidad nueva y única. Reflexionemos acerca de cómo somos o podemos ser co-creadores, creando vínculos y dando vida por el impulso del amor. The classes run from September through May. A new registration form MUST be completed for all present students as well as new students to attend our program.
