For good reason the Jewish law demanded that a leper live set apart and scream out as he walked along to keep everyone at a safe distance. Imagine the pitiful scene of everyone discreetly but purposefully moving away at the sound of someone screaming, Unclean, unclean! Yet the leper doesnʼt scream to keep Jesus away. He walks right up to our Lord and confesses his faith in Jesusʼ power to heal him of this incurable bacteria. He humbly admits his contagious illness and places himself before Jesus. And unlike anyone else might do, Jesus doesnʼt run away, he walks toward him. He does the unthinkable. He touches him! We need not be ashamed of our deadly sin that eats away at our heart and cripples our ability to love. Go to Jesus, expose it to him, and let his loving touch transform you. The terrible disease of leprosy was still a major problem well into the nineteenth century when St. Damian, a Belgian missionary, went to the Hawaiian Island of Molokai to serve as parish priest to all the lepers quarantined on that island. Not fearing to touch them, he cared for them for many years until, as expected, he contracted the disease and died of it. This is what it means to be a Christian! Be like Jesus. Be not afraid of your wounds or those of others, no matter how repellent, and give of yourself to care for them. Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

The Virgin Mary at Fatima and all her major apparitions has requested everyone to pray the rosary and has promised to help them in all their needs, to provide her very special protection, and peace for themselves, for their families and their countries. Change your life by praying at least one decade of the rosary every day. Take 15 minutes to praying it on the train, the bus or the car. Turn off the TV and pray it with your family. See what people for centuries have discovered there is nothing that cannot be accomplished through praying the rosary! 4 FAITH FORMATION Faith Formation Classes are held on Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. at the Parish Center followed by the 10:30 Mass. The classes run from September through May. A new registration form MUST be completed for all present students as well as new students to attend our program. Parents must bring the following documents when registering. The RCIA Process (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process by which those interested in becoming a Roman Catholic Christian learn about our faith. Through interviews, classes and discussions, adults are prepared to accept the challenge of our baptism and encouraged to live the message and teachings of Jesus Christ. The RCIA process is also for those Catholics who have not been educated in our faith and have not received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Communion. 5 PARISH REGISTRATION All persons/families should be registered in the Parish. Registering for the parish not only makes you more a part of the family of Ascension Church it gives a chance for you and your family to be counted. Registration forms are available at the entrance of the Church and at the Rectory Office. Kindly fill out the form and leave at the Rectory Office or in the collection basket. Thank you. LENTEN REGULATIONS In order to help us take part more fully in the season of Lent, the Church as established the following as minimal requirements for us: ABSTINENCE - Everyone 14 years of ago or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday (February 14) and all the Fridays of Lent. FASTING - Everyone 18 years of age and under 60 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday (February 14) and Good Friday (March 30). This practice involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken on two other occasions during the day. EASTER DUTY - After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time of the year. By special indult, in the United States, the time period for fulfilling this precept has been extended to include the period beginning the First Sunday of Lent (February 18) to the Solemnity of the Trinity Sunday (May 27).
