3 REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 MARCH 31, 2019 Brothers and Sisters, Today we welcome the fourth Sunday of Lent, tradi onally called Laetare Sunday, a name which is derived from the words of the prophet Isaiah in our entrance an phon, Rejoice, Jerusalem (Is 66:10-11). We rejoice not merely because we are more than halfway through Lent, we rejoice because we know God is always eager to reconcile with us. Today s readings celebrate this. This Sunday and next the focus of the gospel passages are on the infinite mercy of God. No ma er how sinful, how terrible, how heartbreaking the ac ons of the prodigal son or the adulterous woman are, God s compassion is stronger. A new day has dawned in each reading today. The Israelites have finally reached the Promised Land and can celebrate the Passover in their new home. St Paul tells us that in Christ, we are a new crea on. And in Luke s gospel the prodigal son is welcomed home as someone who had been dead and is now alive again. For Luke, God s reconciling love is the core of Jesus teaching. When the Pharisees and the scribes cri cize him for ea ng with sinners, Jesus tells a parable found only in Luke s account of the gospel, a parable about love, reconcilia on and resentment. Although we may think the prodigal son is the central figure in this parable, it is the father who is. We are clearly meant to iden fy this father with God. Today s parable is one of the best-known and best loved stories in the bible. While it is generally called the parable of the prodigal son, the focus, as we have said, is not only on the prodigal son and his repentance but on the father and his mercy. Incidentally, the story could be called the parable of the resen ul brother. He, the Pharisees and the rest of us who live by the rules may not like it. Resentment has stolen the elder brother s joy. Loyal to his father and his estate, an upright member of the community, he feels he deserves to be the sole inheritor of his father s love. The father s mercy and love encompass both sons. He wants not only his younger son back, but his elder son as well. The ques on is, will the elder son respond to his father s pleas or remain stuck in his resentment and bi erness? This is not a story that separates the two brothers as the good one and the evil one. It is only the father who demonstrates goodness. He wants both sons to par cipate in his joy. The father s unreserved, unlimited love is offered wholly and equally. Today s parable teaches that God offers people a second chance. Jesus calls for repentance and assures us that it is never too late to turn around our lives to bear fruit in God s eyes. Lent is an opportunity for new beginnings for us and perhaps we should take the opportunity to give one another a second chance, to show mercy, learning from the father in the story. For those of us a ending today s 12:00 noon Mass we will celebrate the second scru ny with those who will be ini ated into the Church at the Easter Vigil, and our gospel reading will be from the gospel of John found at number 892 in your JourneySong Book. In the gospel Jesus declares, I am the light of the world. In addressing the Pharisees a er curing the man who was born blind, Jesus calls a en on to a different kind of blindness, a refusal to see, a preference to live in darkness and ignorance. As we listen to God s word today, let us note the value of opening our eyes to Christ s light. JAIL MINISTRY GET ON THE BUS B E G O T B P In his le er to all parishes, Bishop Barnes tells us that Catholic faith communi es throughout the state rally together in conjunc on with the Get on the Bus pro- gram to provide the children of incarcerated parents with a visit with their moms or dads on Mother s Day or Father s Day. Annually, over 1,000 children are willing to board buses and travel hundreds of miles from their homes. This may be the only opportunity they have to be reunited for a few hours as a family due to distance and transpor- ta on issues. Bishop Barnes wants to encourage the faithful to support parish involvement with Get on the Bus in their community. The labyrinth is a prayer walk painted on canvas. It represents our life s journey to God and it is like a tool that helps the pilgrim come to a place of inner peace and quietness so one becomes more open to the Grace God has for them. It is a different experience for everyone, we are all diverse in our background, viewpoints, issues and roadblocks on this journey of life. The labyrinth offers us a way to pray and come into a contemplative space where we are more open to listening to the whispers of the Spirit. If you have never walked this before there will be an English and Spanish team to guide you in this way of prayer. Come and be a part of the journey to the Sacred! Please pray for our beloved dead...
