3 REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 MARCH 24, 2019 Brothers and Sisters, Two and a half weeks ago, as we began our Lenten journey, we may have been told, Repent, and believe in the Gospel, as ashes were placed on our foreheads. It was not a sugges on. It was a command, a command to turn ourselves toward God. Have we followed this command? Are we pu ng our faith into ac on? It s not too late. Like the fig tree in today s gospel, we are cared for by a pa ent gardener. We have been given another chance to bear good fruit. We know not what tomorrow may bring. Moses did not expect to encounter God in a burning bush. Nor did the eighteen people at Siloam expect to be killed in a terrible accident, not did the barren fig tree realize its days were numbered. Lent gives us an opportunity to repent of our sinful ac ons and renew our commitment to follow the Lord, to ready ourselves for whatever the future holds. In our first reading from Exodus when God says to Moses, from the burning bush, I AM who AM, God is declaring that God is the one who will always be beside his people, leading and guiding them. He is the same God that guided their forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. St Paul, in the first le er to the Corinthians (2 nd reading) wants us to take the events of the history of Israel as a warning as to what may happen to us as Chris ans if we are not faithful to God and do not keep to God s ways. In Luke s gospel Jesus offers us a more subtle interpreta on. Disasters, whether caused by nature or people, are not signs of God s punishment. But when things go wrong, they are signs to us to reflect on our lives and ask ourselves whether we are producing the fruit that is asked of us. When Jesus refers to the deaths of the Galileans killed by Pilate and the eighteen people killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them, he does not do so to condemn them. Rather, he uses these incidents as a warning. You cannot know the hour of your death. Take the opportunity to repent today because you may die tomorrow. To further illustrate this Jesus tells a parable about an unproduc ve fig tree. In the Bible, the spiritual health of a country was measured by the health of its fig trees, which normally take three years to reach maturity and bear fruit. The fig tree in the gospel is not doing so and the owner wants to destroy it and have it cut down. However, the gardener bargains with the owner for another year of fer lizing care to allow the tree me to produce. Such is the nature of a fig tree, i.e. grow healthy and strong and bear fruit. On the other hand, what is the nature of a person? First, we need to remember humanity was created in the image and likeness of God, given dominion over all living things and told to be frui ul and mul ply. Addi onally, we were given free will which we promptly misused in the Garden of Eden. So, in answer to the ques on as to a person s nature there are two sides to human nature; unlike the fig tree we have a conscience and an ability to decide how to act. What this parable seems to say is that when we, like the fig tree fail to produce good fruit we may get a second chance. Today at the 10:15 Mass and for the next two weeks at other Masses, we celebrate special Rites called the Scru nies. These Rites give an opportunity for those who will be ini ated fully into our Catholic faith at Easter and each of us, to examine (scru nize) our consciences, repent and pray for strength to turn our lives toward God. May each of us persevere on our spiritual journey. Faithful STEWARDSHIP...Thank you for supporting your parish, St. Catherine of Alexandria! For additional information or to volunteer visit their website at ADVENT LABYRINTH PRAYER WALK SAVE THE DATE Saturday, April 6, 2019 The Labyrinth is modeled from the one in the nave of the Chartres Cathedral in France. It is an eleven circuit labyrinth from our mystical past. The labyrinth has three paths: the going in represents the Path of Letting Go, the Center is the second called the Path of Enlightenment and also a meditation on Creation the third is the way out, the Path of Union. The labyrinth represents our life's journey to God and it is through our life that we come to know God. An ancient archetype, the labyrinth has found renewed use in today's world and many who walk it find it to be a very good tool for meditation. The labyrinth will be available in the Parish Hall from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. VINCENTIAN CORNER In today s Gospel, Jesus is quite clear in His message: bear fruit or be cut down. During Lent we are called to cultivate and fertilize our spiritual lives through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Through your almsgiving you are bearing fruit and performing good works; far greater than you know. Each nickel, dime, quarter or dollar is multiplied by the donations made by others to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and 99 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to serve our clients. Thank you for your prayers and generous donations.
