4 Lenten Family Acitivties During the Lenten season, we often give up something in order to become closer with God and to try to benefit ourselves, like caffeine, sweets, or T.V. What if,this year, we gave something more to God? Our time, our talents, or even our possessions? Considering spending time in devotion or prayer. Consider giving the money that you would use to buy those products you give up to an organization or someone in need. Consider taking time away from busyness to sit in silence and listen to God s voice. In 2006, Meghan Large, an intern for North Carolina Synod s Youth and Family Ministry Program, developed placemats that families can use as devotions and conversation pieces. Best part they are FREE. These will be put out on Sundays during Lent or are accessible at: Do you know the history of the Pretzel? In early Church times, milk, eggs, and fat were not used during Lent. It was a time of discipline and reflection in order to truly seek God. Thus, people could only use flour, salt, and water and would make small loaves of bread this way. The custom was truly picked up by the Germans, who named these loaves of breads pretzels because they resembled praying little arms. I encourage you to make pretzels with your family this year and use them to remind each of you to pray this Lenten season! Bread Pretzels 1 1/4 cups water (85 ) 1 tablespoon dry yeast 1/2 teaspoon sugar 4 1/2cups flour 1 egg yolk 1 to 2 teaspoons water or milk Coarse salt Let yeast and sugar dissolve in water for one hour. Add flour to yeast mixture and beat until smooth. Knead mixture for seven to eight minutes. Place in a greased, covered bowl and let the dough rise until double in size. Divide the dough in half; then divide each half into smaller pieces of equal size. Roll each piece in your hands to make pencil shapes twelve (12) to fifteen (15) inches long. Shape each length of dough into pretzels (see the diagram). Place on a greased baking sheet. Brush with egg yolk and water or milk mixture. Sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake at 325 degrees until lightly browned on top. Frozen Bread Dough Pretzels Thaw one loaf of frozen bread dough. Let the dough rise according to directions on the package. Divide the dough in half and place on a floured board. Cut each half into eight (8) equal pieces. Roll small pieces into strips about eighteen (18) inches long. Shape into pretzels (see the diagram). Place on a greased baking sheet. Brush the tops of the pretzels with beaten egg yolk mixed with one (1) tablespoon of water. Sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake at 350 degrees for twenty (20) to thirty (30) minutes or until lightly browned on top. Before you eat the pretzels, say a prayer together: Dear God, we ask you to bless these pretzels which we are about to eat. Each time we eat them may we be reminded that this is the season of Lent, a time of prayer. Help us to remember to pray for those who need our prayers each day. Keep your loving arms around us, O God, to protect us. In Jesus' name, Amen. 4

5 Yard Maintenance Schedule 2014 If interested in helping to maintain our grounds, please sign-up on forms located in the narthex. Thanks to those who contribute their time! Check Requests Any person submitting a check request or reimbursement MUST have it approved prior to delivering it to the book keeper s office. Requests should be approved and signed by the committee liaison or the committee chair. Request forms are available in the church office and should be placed in the book-keepers box outside his office door.

6 Dear Fellowship of the Redeemed, Pastor s Report In my last month s letter, I highlighted the purpose of our coming together during the Lent and Easter season. In this letter I would like to share details about the journey that we will take together for the weeks leading up to Easter. On Tuesday, March 4, 2014 we will celebrate Shrove Tuesday in the Family Life Center. The entire congregation is invited and encouraged to attend this festive pancake supper with a short program focusing on the meaning of Shrove Tuesday and the burning of the palm fronds left from last year s Palm Sunday service, the ashes of which will be used for the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday. The meal begins at 5:30. Starting Wednesday, March 5, we will gather at either 12:00 noon or 7:00 PM for our Ash Wednesday services which will involve the imposition of ashes and Holy Communion. Continuing on Wednesday evenings, March 12, 19, 26, and April 2, and 9, we will gather in the Family Life Center at 6:00 for a light supper provided by various committees, followed by worship at 7:00 PM. The worship this year will be a Lenten Drama series entitled, The people vs Jesus of Nazareth, acted out by members of the congregation. Throughout the drama various people from Jesus time will be questioned and cross examined and you, the congregation will be acting as the jury. I believe you will enjoy this series. The courtroom scenes become very realistic, the dramas are intense, once again, you will experience the power of the gospel as expressed through the medium of drama. All of these experiences, beginning with Shrove Tuesday and ending with the Lenten Dramas are ways for us to prepare our hearts to hear again how our salvation is accomplished. - Pastor Webber 6
