1 1 Chapel Chatter December 2018 Volume 69 Issue #12 St John s United Methodist Church or Church stjohns_umc@comcast.net Church Facebook: Church Website: Reverend Gene Errickson g.errickson@gmail.com Cell Pastor s Musings December, 2018 Dear Friends in Christ, May Jesus Christ be praised, now and forever. Amen. We celebrated the Feast of Christ, the King on November 25 and brought to a close another Church Year. And now on Sunday, December 2, the First Sunday of Advent, we will begin a new Church Year. Our Advent/Christmas theme is, Come apart and be separate. It is taken from 2 Corinthians 6: 17, Therefore, come out from among them and be separate. During this Advent/Christmas season, I am suggesting that we use the time to draw closer to Christ. We should prepare ourselves to live in the world but not be a part of the sinfulness of it. Rather we should be Christ s representatives, modern day Apostles, sharing the wonderful teachings of Jesus to a world that needs to experience the love of Christ daily. We should be a reminder once again that the world is shaped by the teachings of Jesus and that the teachings of Jesus are not shaped by the practices of the world. The following is our Advent/Christmas Schedule: First Sunday of Advent Blessing of the new Advent Wreath and new Stoles, Lighting of the First Advent Candle, begin decorating of Sanctuary, Chapel and building for Christmas. Second Sunday of Advent Lighting of the Second Advent Candle, Complete Christmas decorating. Third Sunday of Advent Lighting of the Third Advent Candle, Children s Christmas Pageant, Erickson s Christmas Open House in the Gathering Area. Fourth Sunday of Advent Lighting of the Fourth Advent Candle, Choir Christmas Music Presentation. Christmas Eve Worship Service 7:00 PM Lighting of the Christ Candle and Advent Wreath Candles, Lighting of the Altar Candles, Celebration of Holy Communion, Candle Light Singing of Silent Night. As is our custom Christmas Services begin on the Fourth Sunday of Advent at the 8:00 and 10:00 AM Services and continue through The Sunday after Christmas at the 8:00 and 10:00 AM Worship Services. There are five Christmas Services in all including Christmas Eve. January 6 Epiphany Commemoration at 8:00 and 10:00 Worship Services, Blessing of the New Year. It is my sincere prayer that the Advent/ Christmas/ Epiphany Season will be an opportunity to experience God s richest blessings in your lives, that you will grow in Christ s love, and that together we will be God s strong witnesses in the world in Let me take this opportunity for Gail and I to wish you a most Blessed and Joyful Christmas and New Year. Pray for us as we do for you. Love to you in our Infant Savior, Pastor Gene

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR Leacock Presbyterian Church invites you to their Annual Christmas Bazaar on Sat, December 1 from 8 am until 1 pm. Our theme this year is Treats N Treasures. Come for breakfast enjoy a homemade sticky bun or whoopie pie. We will have several homemade soups available for lunch along with sloppy joe sandwiches, hot dogs and yummy mac and cheese. We will start the day with at least 27 tables of items to purchase including homemade cookies and our famous peanut butter bonbons. If you wish to order yours ahead of time just call Loretta You may choose dark/milk or mixed chocolate containers. Cost is $6.50. Hope to see you there. Wishing you a Blessed Christmas! A pastor posted a question on Facebook. How have you observed pew neighbors behaving rudely in church? People shared their shock over those who remove their shoes (especially if they have smelly feet) and others who double-dip the bread during Communion. Here is the Pastor s list of the top 10: 1.Excessive talking 2. Texting, surfing the web and playing video games 3. Sleeping or snoring. Note to my father this includes YOU! 4. Clipping fingernails 5. Answering a ringing phone and having a conversation! 6. Excessive antsyness getting up and down and going in and out of the Sanctuary. 7. Leaving the service early especially during prayer. 8. Letting babies cry and kids play in the aisles. (Except Pastor Gene approves of this one!!!) 9. Snacking, especially cracking gum or crunching chips. 10. Last but not least!!! Too much lovey-doveyness such as back rubbing, thigh patting and pecks on the cheek that last more than a half-a-second!! Advent Season 2018
5 5 Advent Theme: Come apart and be separate Lectio Divina-Divine Reading Guidelines I am making a small change int the selection of verses for meditation during the Advent season. Instead of using a verse of a psalm or other part of Scripture, I am offering an antiphon for meditation. An antiphon is a verse, usually taken from Scripture, and either read or sung before the singing or reading of a psalm. In praying The Christian Prayer every day I have found the antiphons to be especially prayerful. I thought I would use these during the Advent Season for your Lectio Divina Devotion. These antiphons are taken from what was once called the Night Office and today is called the Office of Readings. Just to re-explain, Lectio Divina is basically a prayerful reading of a portion of Holy Scripture until a passage strikes one strongly enough that they then begin to meditate and pray on it. To simplify this practice somewhat, I am offering an Antiphon for meditation and prayer each day through the Advent and Christmas Season. What I would suggest is to set a five to ten minute or more time slot aside each day to slowly read and reread the passage applying it to your own life situation. Then simply pray to God in your own words or the words of a Psalm from which you find meaningful. While you only need to do this once a day you can return to it at other times during the day if you care to. I have found that selecting one verse each day, I return to it throughout the day at different times. It then becomes a springboard for prayer throughout the day. You might begin your time with the words: May the meditation of my mind and the prayer of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord. or Open my mind and heart to spend this time with you, O Lord. An ending prayer could be: Thanks for taking time to be with me, Lord. I hope this practice will add to the spiritual experience of your personal devotion during the Advent Season this year. The list of Scripture readings is attached.
